CTS and severe hand pain on awakening (sm)

Posted: Dec 10, 2013

I've had severe CTS, mostly in the right hand for 20+ years.  In recent weeks I have been waking up with severe hand pain, mostly in the middle, ring and little finger so bad I can barely make a fist.  After getting up and moving around the pain subsides.   I haven't had the pain before and wonder if this is the CTS or something else.  I do mostly editing but it seems to bother me after doing a bunch of transcriptions the day before.

Could be the CTS - question

Do you wear a brace at night? That might help.

Do you have any other pain as well? Like neck, shoulder, or elbow? Or is it just the hand?

Carpal tunnel syndrome affected my thumb and index finger. Cubital tunnel syndrome affected my middle, ring, and little fingers.

Doctor said it was "ulnar tunnel". It just recently changed to the middle, ring and little finger with this new pain on awakening. It's so severe I can't type, or hold anything, but it quickly resolves in about 15 minutes. Maybe this is what happens with age (60) plus CTS.

I had carpal tunnel release on both hands in 1975 and have had no trouble since, and I've been doing straight typing since then, usually 10 hours a day. Have you ever considered surgery?

As far as the cubital tunnel, it has pretty much resolved itself because I'm careful about leaning on my elbow and keeping my arm as straight as possible. It started when I used a Dictaphone and had to reach to sign off reports a zillion times a day and got epicondylitis.

Necks can cause problems in fingers. Maybe that's what's causing your current problem.

Thanks for the info (sm) - Rose

Glad you had successful CT releases. I've been without insurance for 8 years but may have it done next year if I can afford a Medicare supplement.

I do have cervical neck stenosis. Never thought that could be related to finger nerves, but that is definitely a possibility.

Bilateral Hand Pain On AwakeningJan 06, 2013
I have had CTS for over 20 years but a new symptom has me questioning RA or OA. I'm waking up with pretty bad hand and wrist pain, numbness and extreme weakness bilaterally. I could not even turn on the light this morning due to lack of sensation. It is most in the right (and I sleep on the right side) but in both hands. The most affected fingers are thumb, index and middle. Lying there moving the hands doesn't help but once and get up and move around the pain subsides quickly. ...

Back Pain......severeFeb 13, 2012
Any suggestions for severe higher back pain? It's around my left shoulder blade and goes into my chest.  I've done the heat and ice, hot bath, Advil, Flexeril, and sleeping in different beds in the house.  Nothing is working and it is literally killing me. Unfortunately I work for a company with very little work so I can't just up and go to the doctor.  Sitting here and working is just too hard when all I want to do is lay down and try to sleep. ...

Severe Shoulder Pain, Does This Sound Like SomethingNov 13, 2012
anyone else has heard of or perhaps had, needing some input. I know we are not doctors but we hear and type so much that someone might have heard of similar. No arthritis, nothing else diagnosed except have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia in the past although this is 1 spot. I had EKGs, x-rays, have been given Flexeril, anti-inflammatories, Medrol Dose-Pak, pain pills, have been to P ...

Severe Depression And AnxietyMay 16, 2016
This is going to be all over the place, but please bear with me. I have to get this out. I've been fighting severe depression since I lost my dad, and that was in 2011. I went for months and months not even wanting to get out of bed, waking up and immediately having a panic attack. Who has a panic attack when they first wake up? PainJan 25, 2010
Hey, m'lovely MT sisters, I suspect I have bursitis in my right shoulder.  It started as pain in my right arm biceps area and I had an odd rash in the area, so to be honest I was afraid it might have been shingles (never had them, but heard they're very painful). Ladies, it's been about 6 weeks and it's still freakling painful, but I believe I was wrong on precisely where the pain was originating.  I believe it's emanating at my right shoulder joint.  I&# ...

Old MT/QA With PainMay 13, 2010

Leg PainDec 05, 2013
For the last couple weeks, whenever I go to bed, if I am on my back or side, I awaken several times with pain in my right calf and knee, if I turn on my stomach it goes away.  The first couple hours I am up in the morning it is painful, cannot put my right leg over my left, cannot cross my leg to put on my shoes because it immediately causes a sharp pain to shoot through my leg.  Cannot bend over because of the same.  After moving around about two hours it is okay pretty much the ...

Second-hand SmokeAug 10, 2011
