Bilateral Hand Pain on Awakening
Posted: Jan 6, 2013
I have had CTS for over 20 years but a new symptom has me questioning RA or OA. I'm waking up with pretty bad hand and wrist pain, numbness and extreme weakness bilaterally. I could not even turn on the light this morning due to lack of sensation. It is most in the right (and I sleep on the right side) but in both hands. The most affected fingers are thumb, index and middle. Lying there moving the hands doesn't help but once and get up and move around the pain subsides quickly.
Have others experienced this? Thanks for any input or suggestions. I don't have medical insurance so any suggestions for OTC remedies would also be appreciated. :o)

I've had CTS for years - numbness and tingling, not necessarily related to activity or time of day or night, but no real pain. In the last month I've been having severe pain at night in hand, wrist, and part way up arm, which persists until I get out of bed and move around.
Sorry you are having this too (sm) - Angie

Have you asked your doctor about it? Please let us know if if you find out what it is. I think it is more than CTS.

Could be De Quervain's tenosynovitis. A soft fit wrist brace can help, but does not repair this condition.

I had the same exact pain, numbness, tingling. I also had CTS that I worked with for years. Wore splints, took OTC and Rx meds. As it got worse the pain at night got worse. My entire arm all the way to my shoulder would go numb.
I finally had surgery and no more symptoms.
I broke down and had the surgery when I was waking up several times a night hanging my arm over the side of the bed and shaking it trying to get the pain to go away and the feeling to come back. It is a natural progression of CTS.
I was working in-house and it was covered as a workman's comp claim.
since you are asking for OTC ideas... - naturopath help

I have an awesome guidebook written by a naturopath and also experience in being a patient of vegetarian diets, vegan, accupuncture, etc. I woke up about 6mos-1yr ago with joint pain in a couple of my fingers, felt like what arthritis would be if i knew/guessed. Researched and laid off all fried foods and inflammatory foods ie wheat etc, lowered my refine sugar intake. Within a month it had subsided fully. I also love Arnica gel for joint pain, muscle swelling. and the big thing, no more knuckle cracking cuz that seemed to cause all the issues again. never looked back after that last pop/crack;)
Dont get me wrong i still wake up with sore hands occaasionally but thats due to working hard plus domestication crap.

CTS And Severe Hand Pain On Awakening (sm)Dec 10, 2013I've had severe CTS, mostly in the right hand for 20+ years. In recent weeks I have been waking up with severe hand pain, mostly in the middle, ring and little finger so bad I can barely make a fist. After getting up and moving around the pain subsides. I haven't had the pain before and wonder if this is the CTS or something else. I do mostly editing but it seems to bother me after doing a bunch of transcriptions the day before. ...
Bilateral Wrist Pain And SwellingNov 10, 2010Okay, I've been doing MT work for about 25 years and never had much of a problem with my wrists that a little R&R didn't fix.
Lately, I've been having pain that seems to start in my wrists, causes my wrists and fingers on both hands to swell, and the pain seems to travel up both of my arms to my shoulder region. It hurts to even reach overhead to change my shirt.
Has anyone else experienced this? I do editing most of the day, which might be why I've ne ...

PainJan 25, 2010Hey, m'lovely MT sisters, I suspect I have bursitis in my right shoulder. It started as pain in my right arm biceps area and I had an odd rash in the area, so to be honest I was afraid it might have been shingles (never had them, but heard they're very painful).
Ladies, it's been about 6 weeks and it's still freakling painful, but I believe I was wrong on precisely where the pain was originating. I believe it's emanating at my right shoulder joint. I ...

Old MT/QA With PainMay 13, 2010I have been an MT/QA for 24 years. I have fibromyalgia, arthritis, have had bilateral carpal tunnel release, and I have cervical impingement. I tried a new product called Evolv enhanced water beverage which has a formula called Archaea Active. It claims to "promote a healthy inflammatory response." Honestly, I was skeptical about it, but I am here to testify that this is truly a Godsend!! It was explained to me that it increases oxygen at the cellular level and ...
Leg PainDec 05, 2013For the last couple weeks, whenever I go to bed, if I am on my back or side, I awaken several times with pain in my right calf and knee, if I turn on my stomach it goes away. The first couple hours I am up in the morning it is painful, cannot put my right leg over my left, cannot cross my leg to put on my shoes because it immediately causes a sharp pain to shoot through my leg. Cannot bend over because of the same. After moving around about two hours it is okay pretty much the ...

Second-hand SmokeAug 10, 2011I'm getting stale cigarette smoke coming through the air vent in my apartment, from the people in the apt. above me. Our building property manager won't do a thing, and I do NOT want to approach my neighbors personally, cause I'm not good at this kind of thing and would probably make things worse.
Would an air cleaner or purifier do anything for this kind of problem? I'd buy anything within reason, if it would help reduce the smoke smell.
Any advice most ...

Pain At The PumpMar 01, 2012Do you ever wonder why the gas prices are up and down? There is still about the same amount of gas out there (although it is a finite resouce that is going away) and we are still using about the same, more or less, with our more efficient vehicles.
The price fluctuates because the Wall Street traders can make it fluctuate. They do this so they can make money. In 2008, (Bush Administration, by the way) the prices were over $4.00 a gallon. The Obama administratio ...
Pain In ShinsJun 02, 2011Hi. I actually have a health question related to transcribing! I've transcribed for over 25 years and have had no problems other than tight neck and shoulders; no hand, wrist or arm pain. Inner Ankle PainJun 13, 2013Hi all,
For the last 2 years or so I have been suffering from right inner ankle pain. It has progressively gotten more and more painful. I have had x-rays and it shows nothing is wrong. I am pretty sure it's has to be posterior tibialis tendinitis, but now it's starting on the left ankle. When I rotate my right ankle in a circle, I can feel a popping sensation that doesn't really feel like it's bone, but it is so terribly sore. I wondered if may ...
Knee PainJun 20, 2013Have been told by orthopod that I have bone-on-bone in my right knee. He suggested surgery and gave me Tramadol for the pain. Surgery is not an option financially at this time. Any suggestions on how to deal?
