Severe ankle edema

Posted: Jun 10, 2011

For the past 10 days or so, and never before in my life, my ankles are swelling to the point of pain and the skin on my left foot looks like it is going to burst.  I have no options for work other than home MT and work full time and more at this.  Anyone else have this issue and what do you do about it?

ankle edema from prolonged sitting - cr

[ In Reply To ..]
I've had ankle edema for years, mainly from prolonged sitting on the job, but I've also noticed drugs such as antidepressants and sleeping pills, even Benadryl, definitely make it worse, so it's best not to take any medications if possible and keep salt intake down. It helps to wrap your ankles and legs before starting to work. I wear ankle-high boots to keep the swelling down, and that helps a lot.

Are you taking any medications? I started taking Benicar HCT about 5 years ago for blood pressure right before going on vacation where I did a lot of walking, came back and had to sit and type about 12 hours a day to make up my lines the following week and my legs were really swollen, wrote it off to going from walking a lot to sitting for extended periods of time and didn't think much of it, except it didn't get better. Finally got off the medicine last summer and my calves and ankles are tiny now, apparently was a side effect no one bothered to tell me about until afterward. One thing that does work is elevating your feet when not on the foot pedal, I still keep a stool under my desk to keep my leg out, also keep them elevated on a foot stool when watching TV, etc, and kept a pillow under them when sleeping at night. Also, possibly have the opposite problem I did and need medicine to help, should really check with your doctor. Hope it gets better soon!

ankle edema is a sign of heart failure - sweetgirlsmom

You should see a physician right away. My mother developed CHF when she was 46 and almost died several times in the next few years. She improved with proper medical care and died at 80 from heart failure.

Last fall I suffered from leg edema, first time in my life. Also rapid heartbeat, dizziness, fatigue. It turned out that I was severely anemic. H and H dropped to 6 and 22. Have complete blood count done and see where to go from there. I, too, thought it was my heart. My heart is fine. After blood transfusions and months on ferrous sulfate, anemia is almost a thing of the past.

I do get up every 1.5 hours and walk or on my treadmill for 5 minutes, though.

Inner Ankle PainJun 13, 2013
Hi all, For the last 2 years or so I have been suffering from right inner ankle pain.  It has progressively gotten more and more painful.  I have had x-rays and it shows nothing is wrong.  I am pretty sure it's has to be posterior tibialis tendinitis, but now it's starting on the left ankle.  When I rotate my right ankle in a circle, I can feel a popping sensation that doesn't really feel like it's bone, but it is so terribly sore.  I wondered if may ...

Ankle/foot SwellingAug 10, 2011
For the 2nd time in 2 weeks I have had extreme foot and ankle swellling.  Funny enough it has happened exactly a week from the first episode.  I used to swell just a little bit from working but by the next morning, it would have subsided.  Not these past 2 times. Last week, I went to the doctor and got some Lasix and even after taking 1/2-1 tablet per day of this, my feet are still swollen 3+.  It is very uncomfortable and unnerving. Should I go back to the doctor or put my f ...

Front Of Ankle PainSep 29, 2010
Does anyone else have pain in the front of their ankle from using the foot pedal?  After waaaay too many years doing this job, the front of both ankles (I switch feet while transcribing) are now really bothering me.  No swelling, tho.  I go to the gym 2 hours a day and of that, 45 min is cardio.  Ankles don't bother me then.  Wondering if anyone has had this and found a solution?  Any advice would be most greatly appreciated! ...

Back Pain......severeFeb 13, 2012
Any suggestions for severe higher back pain? It's around my left shoulder blade and goes into my chest.  I've done the heat and ice, hot bath, Advil, Flexeril, and sleeping in different beds in the house.  Nothing is working and it is literally killing me. Unfortunately I work for a company with very little work so I can't just up and go to the doctor.  Sitting here and working is just too hard when all I want to do is lay down and try to sleep. ...

Severe Depression And AnxietyMay 16, 2016
This is going to be all over the place, but please bear with me. I have to get this out. I've been fighting severe depression since I lost my dad, and that was in 2011. I went for months and months not even wanting to get out of bed, waking up and immediately having a panic attack. Who has a panic attack when they first wake up? It seems as thought negative life events have just piled up so far, that I don't have the energy or the motivation to care anymore. I was molest ...

anyone else has heard of or perhaps had, needing some input. I know we are not doctors but we hear and type so much that someone might have heard of similar. CTS And Severe Hand Pain On Awakening (sm)Dec 10, 2013
I've had severe CTS, mostly in the right hand for 20+ years.  In recent weeks I have been waking up with severe hand pain, mostly in the middle, ring and little finger so bad I can barely make a fist.  After getting up and moving around the pain subsides.   I haven't had the pain before and wonder if this is the CTS or something else.  I do mostly editing but it seems to bother me after doing a bunch of transcriptions the day before.  ...
