Severe shoulder pain, does this sound like something

Posted: Nov 13, 2012

anyone else has heard of or perhaps had, needing some input. I know we are not doctors but we hear and type so much that someone might have heard of similar.

This past weekend I went to the ER with left shoulder/left upper arm pain. This pain has now been here 2 weeks. No arthritis, nothing else diagnosed except have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia in the past although this is 1 spot. I had EKGs, x-rays, have been given Flexeril, anti-inflammatories, Medrol Dose-Pak, pain pills, have been to PCP, ortho, cardiologist (had stress test there plus another EKG). Two of the physicians mentioned perhaps PT if pain not relieved. All tests seemingly ok. Still in pain and what I am wondering has anyone else had similar or heard similar because if so I can do some research myself and perhaps bring up to my physicians.

Hi, I just saw an orthopedist for possibly a similar situation. My right shoulder and upper arm would hurt. The arm would radiate to the elbow in sort of a spiral line. If I reached back from the drivers seat to the backseat my shoulder in the front would hurt, could not sleep on that side. Had x-rays, no arthritis, no rotator cuff issue, basically no patholgy on x-rays. Dr explained to me it was probably a frozen shoulder, we get them as we age he said. He recommended an injection and did this from the backside of my shoulder. NO PAIN from the injection, I was glad. There was some lidocaine in it so it felt better right away. He said the injection might take a few days to take affect, boy was he off. That night I was 100% better, that was two weeks and and I am still 100% better. He did mention that if this did not work then one option was manipulation unde anesthesia to move the area and break up any normal growth of scar tissue that we might get as we age. I have had no injuries so not scar tissue from any previous injury or surgery. Hope this helps.

Good Luck

Will take that and run - PR

I was to return to ortho (or at least let him know if better or not) and definitely will go back with what you have said. He never mentioned frozen but if injection helped for your symptoms might ask about frozen and there you go. Thanks so much.

After about 3 wks of pain with any movement of my right upper arm, I went to my PCP who, of course, had no idea what was going on. He wrote a referral directly to PT. I bypassed all the expensive specialists and tests. Lo and behold, I have a rotator cuff strain/weakness which may be aggravated by a pinched nerve in my neck (I do have disk space narrowing there.) After 1 PT treatment and lots of stretching exercises on my own, which we all should do because of our static position with keyboarding, the constant ache abated and I was left with only pain with certain movements of my arm. After a total of 4 PT treatments with stretching and strengthening there and on my own, the pain is completely gone. My advice is to bypass the orthopedist, neurologist, etc., and go directly to PT. Also do keep up the stretching and strengthening for the long term.

Question still and so in love with this board! - PR

You know, either we have, know someone or have typed on issues we ourself might come down with and what a blessing to come here and be able to pick the minds of others who are able to give us feedback. My thanks to you also because already have an order for PT just in case I wanted to go. Just wondering if first the lidocaine to help out and then the PT. What do you think?
What I think is...SM - Old Anon

Most definitely go to PT anyway. Because of the kind of work we do, we do not stretch/exercise our upper bodies, especially arms, enough. PT will definitely be an education for what stretching/strenghtening needs to be done for the long term. I only had 4 PT sessions. The trick will be to keep up the program on your own, or else the problem may return.

Try Myocalm (what i prefer). Combo of magnesium calcium + and relieves muscle tension, aches and pains. I have not used Advil in about 2 years. I am quite sore often from sitting at this desk. A steady yoga routine has helped lots.
Metaphysically, here is what shoulder pain = Shoulder pain represents our ability to carry our experiences in life joyously. We choose to make life a burden by our attitude.

According to Annette Noontil in her book "The Body is the barometer of the soul" (Brumby Books, 2008):
The Shoulders have to do with literally not shouldering your responsibility.
The left shoulder has to do with guilt that is stopping you from being responsible to understand yourself, so that you can just be yourself.
The right shoulder is to do with guilt that is causing you to not take responsibility to gain for yourself from whatever you do.

I think energetically our aches and pains can be transformed. google it.

What does she say about low back pain?
low back pain - func med
[ In Reply To ..]
Back pain can be related to many emotions in your life. Lower back pain may reflect your fear of money or lack of financial support.
lower back pain represents financial support, emotional support of family and friends, or even support from God or Great Spirit. In Chinese medicine the kidneys are also related to this as they sit near the lower back, and kidney dysfunction can result in fear, fright or phobias.

I am having problems with my right shoulder and "guilt causing me to not take responsibility" is dead on! My husband says it is fine, but I have only worked part time for a preschool most of this year while he has taken on a part time job in addition to his full time one because transcription is so scarce in my area. I have worked two or three jobs since we have been married and now it is his turn and he is fine with it, but I have been feeling guilty!

One possibility is bursitis. sm - VTMT

[ In Reply To ..]
A less likely cause could be rheumatoid arthritis as it was in my case. It was my first symptom 15 years ago. A steroid/lidocaine shoulder injection as described by the poster above cleared up the pain. This injection is also the usual treatment for bursitis. It happened that I was misdiagnosed by a jerk of a doctor, diagnosed myself after some research, then insisted on a blood test which confirmed, then changed doctors. Good luck and let us know what happens.

I have same problem from sitting at desk with arm on mouse most of the day for over a year.. - Angie

I went to the Dr. Monday and they did xrays and found a small bone spur on my rotator cuff. Suggested medrol, pain pill, etc and/or cortisone injection. Got the injection at the appt and its like it never happened. I went to orthopedic DR. Hope that helps! Good luck.!

Follow up on severe shoulder pain - PR

After having numerous meds including oral steroids, anti-inflammatories, Flexeril, Hydrocodone, whatever, returned to the ortho doctor this morning for an injection in the shoulder and then on to PT as soon as I can get in. I have been tested for RA before with none being found. Physician this morning did not give diagnosis, I asked what he thought it might be except he said he thought the fibromyalgia which I have had a diagnosis of for years; however it has never been localized to a particular spot such as this is, usually pain body wide which I have just learned to live with over the years, you know most physicians think that diagnosis is just because mostly women if you know what I mean. If more men were diagnosed then I am sure we would already have not only the diagnosis but also treatment for it. Thanks fellow workers. I have read and taken heed of your suggestions.
