No concentrated sweets diet...any opinions?
Posted: Apr 30, 2013
has anyone tried this.
;
Are you following a specific protocol such as GAPS - or the Specific Carbohydrate diet
[ In Reply To ..]
Or just cutting out sweets and added sugars, etc?
Your initial post isn't very specific.
No concentrated sweets can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people.

just cutting out sweets. I'm looking up GAPS right now online, thanks for the tip.
I cut out sweets and feel it helped immensely. - Sugar Queen

As you can see by my name, it was a pretty difficult thing for me to do. :)
Things I noted improvement in after a couple of weeks:
--Less tired. I used to get tired around 8 p.m., and now I can usually make it until 10.
--Less PMS irritability, which was the reason I experimented with giving up sugar.
--My skin looks much, much better. This is the main motivation for resisting sweets now. My skin looks good enough that I feel comfortable not using foundation or powder.
--Improved stomach function. My stomach used to be very, very vocal, to the point where my husband and I had a whole variety of jokes about it. But since I cut out sugar, it's been very quiet. I kind of miss the monster that used to live in my tummy sometimes, but I like to think he's in a better place now.
I eat pretty well and don't eat a lot of processed foods, so that helps cut down on sugar a lot. I also stopped taking sugar in my coffee, and I like the taste better this way, so that worked out well. I find the coffee just goes down easier and leaves less of a film on my mouth (yeah, gross I know, but not having that gross film in my mouth was a big bonus).
Well, kind of - Another suggestion

Kind of tried it, but the cravings were horrible. I was ravenous all the time-worse than before. It didn't seem to result in any weight loss, either.
Went gluten-free for reasons unassociated with weight, though, and was entirely craving-free within 2 weeks. Dropped 29 pounds in 2 months without dieting, no longer look pasty, my face isn't lumpy, my eyes are no longer half swollen-shut, and my ankles don't swell. I have lost 3 sizes in panties, a considerable bra size, 2 shirt and 2 trouser sizes, a shoe size and now wear regular knee socks and knee-hi stockings instead of plus-size. I had to get all new clothes and have maintained that without trying for more than 2 years. To lose more, I just eat a little less.
Some other things that vanished right away were a kind of brain fog that I never knew I had, distractability, a kind of ADHD thing, GERD, and irritable bowel syndrome. My stomach no longer growls, I don't have gas pains, and no longer have diarrhea. I also no longer have a stuffy nose and wheezing after eating. I am almost completely migraine-free and no longer have joint pains or swelling.
The gluten-free was so successful that I don't consume dairy products now, either.
Do I have to worry about concentrated sweets now? No, because when you are eating out of the produce department and meat case, there really aren't any. You won't crave them, anyway.
And no, I do not buy special foods. This is less cost than before.
My experience is not unusual. It is very typical.
Thanks for the feedback everyone - wheres_my_job

definitely vegetables, fruits, oatmeal, whole grain the way to go - not so sure about a gluten-free diet, right now it's hard enough to not eat concentrated sweets, because I crave them for emotional reasons as well, if that makes sense. Cake makes me happy (until it makes me sick). Thanks again for everyone's responses.
Whole grains . . . - Not exactly healthy
[ In Reply To ..]
Whole grains are not exactly healthy, despite the hype marketing they have gotten in the last 50 years.
They actually produce a blood sugar spike equal to or worse than sugar, and there are some studies that have implicated them in obesity, diabetes, inflammatory disorders, and heart disease. The epidemic of obesity and diabetes in the US occurred hand in hand with the genetic manipulation of wheat to produce high-yield strains. You may think grain is healthy, and it might have been in 1900, but you aren't eating THAT grain anymore. You are eating something with a completely different molecular composition and you are eating more of it than anyone in history ever has. To make matters worse, that molecular composition turns out to have an effect on the opioid receptors of the brain that makes it several times more addictive than cocaine.
In other words, that "healthy" grain the food industry is cramming into every available product possible is making Americans fat, diabetic, fibromyalgic, rheumatic, migrainous, belching, atherosclerotic drug addicts.
If you doubt the hold the addiction has on you, just look at your statement that "cake makes me happy."
That doesn't make it an "emotional reason" -- it is a plain old drug addiction. It is making you fat and happy, and your brain likes that. It's just pleasant.
There's such a thing as "whole grain cake"? - wheres_my_job
[ In Reply To ..]
Cake is not "whole grain." And it is not whole grain that is making Americans fat, diabetic, fibromyalgic, rheumatic, migrainous, belching, atherosclerotic drug addicts. Excess sugar and fats, and a lack of fresh fruits and vegetables AND fiber AND a lack of exercise, combined with high-stress lives with no relief are the things making Americans fat.
Cake is not "whole grain." And there is such a thing as "emotional eating," that has a lot to do with emotional associations people have with certain kinds of food. There is a physical component to cravings, and also an emotional component. Even after the physical component is gone, people can still desire all kinds of crap when emotionally upset, or confused (they don't know what they're feeling, and it's unpleasant), etc.
I find it odd that you purport to know so much about "whole grains" and their deleterious effect on people - and then present cake as an example of a "whole grain." It's sugar, refined flour (NOT whole grain, fat, food coloring, chocolate, etc.
Flour is just as addictive as sugar - and cake is grain...wheat
[ In Reply To ..]
The above posted is absolutely correct. Wheat has an insulogenic response that is equal to that of sugar. Read "Wheat Belly" by Dr. William Davis.
Grains are baby plants. Their sole purpose in life is to get into the ground to sprout to make another plant. In order to facilitate that purpose in life, they have antinutrients on the outside of them which make them undigestible, so the birds, etc., that eat them will poop them out, thus enabling them to be spread far and wide and sprout themselves to make another plant.
There absolutely is emotional eating. I completely agree with you about that. BUT - and this is more because of my own N=1 experiment than anything else - if I abstain from wheat or any grain product whatsoever, my emotional eating becomes almost nonexistent. When I include wheat or other types of grain in my diet, I am bloated, gassy, emotional, hungry all the time, and will eat anything I can get my grubby little paws on.
Don't dismiss something so quickly without doing some research. The only people who really are saying that whole grains are good for you are doctors who have been steeped in conventional wisdom and the people who are backed by the grain producing industry.
I'm not eating a high whole-grain diet??? - wheres_my_job

Re: "When I include wheat or other types of grain in my diet, I am bloated, gassy, emotional, hungry all the time, and will eat anything I can get my grubby little paws on." -- This may be true for you. But it's not true for me. I'm glad you found what works for you. But I was asking about no concentrated SWEETS (pie, brownies, cake, cookies) and NOT about cutting out whole grains entirely. I love candy too, and that doesn't contain whole grains, at least not in any appreciable amounts (See's Candy or Godiva).
So good for you! I'm glad you're on the diet you need to be. However, based on my own past and current experience, I'm not too concerned about whole grains.

How can you manage a sweet free diet, but still eat cake? As usual, you make no sense.

"As usual, you make no sense." I'm making plenty of sense - so much sense, apparently I need to be attacked for it. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

'Cause you didn't attack the whole grains poster, yeah right.
Cake was not presented as a whole grain - but flour is a grain product

The list of foods you gave as sweets were primarily flour and sugar.
You like to ask for help, but then scoff at the advice you are given. I always wonder if you do it deliberately as some sort of entertainment.
Processed white flour is not a "whole grain" - wheres_my_job
[ In Reply To ..]
A "grain product" is not the same as a "whole grain product." The foods I mentioned have plenty of sugar, fat, often milk, chocolate, nuts, etc. They are defined as "concentrated sweets," not as "concentrated whole grains" - why? - listen carefully: They have a LOT of sugar in them, NOT WHOLE GRAINS.
I scoff at poor reasoning wrapped up in personal attacks. Wonder away at my motivations, if it makes you happy.
You brought up - whole grains
[ In Reply To ..]
as part of healthy eating and the "way to go." Some one was kind enough to inform you that grains in general, to include whole grains, tie into the whole sugar craving issue, but you, in turn, crabbed at them. Nice. Not sure why you bother to ask for advice if all you're going to do is crab about it.
I asked for opinions - not advice - wheres_my_job

You do understand that the difference between - grain and whole grain is just the milling
[ In Reply To ..]
Right?
Whole grain = cereal grains that contain cereal germ, endosperm, and bran.
Refined grains (or as you out it "grain product") retains only the endosperm.
I get that you are looking at reducing sweets and it's a very good step. As an adjunct to that, however, do some research about reducing or eliminating grains from your diet. By grains, I mean ALL grains. Whole grain, refined grain, i.e., wheat, corn, oats, rye, barley, etc.
Is it easy? Not really. Is it worth it? Completely. I lost 50 pounds in less than 6 months without really trying once I gave up grains. Sugars, too, but I didn't eat that much sugary stuff. It makes that much of a difference. I was never a big sweet eater - I don't use sugar in coffee or tea and I'd much rather have a bag of something salty and crunchy as opposed to something sweet. I can walk by candy but I'll knock you over to get to the potato chips. I say that simply so you can get a sense that while cutting out sugar is a great start, if you're really serious about health and feeling better, take it a step further and eliminate grain as well. They form their own sort of sugar in your body. A forum I go on where people eat this way regularly has a number of people on it who suffered from IBS, fibromyalgia, eczema, and a host of other issues and by eliminating grains, very many of these people have elminated the problems completely.
It's something to think about.
yours is not a widely held opinion - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
in fact, I'm finding it hard to substantiate, aside from a nonscientific blog. Whole grains are far more healthy than refined grains. Just because it says "whole grain" on the label doesn't necessarily make it whole grain, though.
Disagree - grain free
[ In Reply To ..]
There is a large community of people who know that grains are unhealthy.
It is widely held and - Gaining strength
[ In Reply To ..]
You might have misunderstood the point, though. It was not that whole grains aren't more healthy than refined . . it was that grains in general are not as "healthy" as the food industry has made them out to be.
They are not exactly toxic, at least not unless you have celiac disease or gluten intolerance, but they are fairly high up on the list of things that are associated with disease.

Opinions, PleaseMay 26, 2013Hi all,
What do you think about people who pray for, what I term, silly things? Like what color drapes to buy, what shoes to wear that day, etc.
I find it rather silly because people have to take controls over their own lives. I do not believe in "handing everything over" to the higher power. Our higher power (who I term God) gave us brains and will and power to make decisions.
