On Line Diet Companies

Posted: Jul 29, 2010

I was just wondering if anyone has ever tried the on line diet places where you purchase food, like NutriSystems, EDiets, etc., and actually lost weight.  Mostly I am considering it because of having to work 18 hours a day to barely make my mortgage each month, I do not really have time to cook a nutritious meal, and my body is suffering.  I was wondering if the food was any good, and if someone actually did lose weight.  I was wondering if the cost of the food was worth not having to actually cook.  Can someone give me some insight??  Thanks in advance.

E-Diets and NutriSystems have a good reputation, but I think are quite expensive, you mentioned having trouble making your mortgage. Neither of them would be my choice because I would not want to be limited to purchasing their food. People do lose weight on those programs, though. I work and go to school and have found that making my own meals (crock pot) in advance and freezing serving size portions to microwave later works pretty well, hopefully you have a little time on your days off for meal preparation. Stir frys are also quick, low in calories and pretty nutritious. You could get some fruits and veggies, string cheese, 100-calorie cracker packs, popcorn and the like to keep at your desk for snacks. If you are willing to count calories yourself and control portions on your own it would save you quite a bit of money.

I tried a few things - sm

First I tried Nutri-System. I didn't care for a lot of the food, but I am a picky eater. It was rather expensive but if you're single and that's all you're eating, it pretty much balances out what you'd spend at the grocery store.

I wasn't on it long enough to know if it worked or not. I bought it from QVC, so after 2 weeks, I sent the rest back for a full refund. A friend of mine tried it and upgraded to the package where you pick what meals you want and she lost around 20 or 30 pounds on it. Unfortunately when she went off, she gained it all back and then some. I was also told by another friend who tried it that her doctor told her those foods were very high in sodium and weren't good for other health reasons.

I did Weight Watchers with more success. I think it ends up running around $20 or $25 a month for the online program. Once you get used to it, it doesn't take much time to plug stuff in and the recipes in their emails are pretty good. You can subscribe to their e-newsletter without being a WW member.

The thing that works the best for me is exercise. I walk about 3 to 4 miles almost daily. In the last 3 months, I've lost almost 30 pounds. I don't limit what I eat so much as how much I eat.

Good luck with your weight loss efforts!

thank you for the weight loss suggestions. I appreciate it. however, I was mainly asking because I just do not have the time or the energy to "cook." I have a crock pot and use it more frequently than my stove for making meals. Being by myself, I am not motivated to cook anything fancy, and if I do not get done working sometimes until 8 pm at night, I will just eat a P&B sandwich or something, as I no longer want to make anything. Microwaves tend to change the flavor of foods, and I do not like to make meals in them. I do not think they are good for anything but making popcorn or heating a cup of soup. I am totally lacking in nutrition and thought that perhaps one of these places that send food for their diets might be a good alternative, since I do need to lose weight, as well. If I don't have time to cook, I certainly do not have time to "take a walk" or any other type of scheduled exercise. I need to work the long hours that I do in order to pay my expenses, so cutting back on that is not an option either. I just need to eat properly and I cannot find the time to do that. Sandwiches and pizza are not the answer. I was hoping for a little more insight into these online diet companies and the types of food they offer.

I tried NS a few years ago but was not dedicated - sm - need to lose too MT

enough to stick to it. Did it half-heartedly for about two months and did not lose more than a couple pounds. But NS does work, I had done NS years ago (1988) when you went to the center and lost 15 pounds (I was only 130 then and wanted to be 115, my pre-college weight, silly me); need to lose about 80 now. I also did it another time after that and lost 20 pounds. I would get a bypass (or Lab-Band) in a heartbeat if my insurance would pay for it, but unless something has changed (possible as my insurance has been restructured and taken over by a new company) that is not gonna happen. Just got in touch with an old friend who is the same height/age as me, was a little bit heavier than I (by about 10-15 pounds) and lost 100 pounds since March 2009 via bypass, amazing. She is a success story though, no complications, etc. --- but I have been just trying to watch what I eat lately and have lost about 4 pounds, so I plan to just continue on that route and start walking again (used to walk 3 miles a day 5-6 days a week), though will have to start out slow as walking just a tiny bit gets me out of breath, so need to build up my cardiovascular endurance. But NS costs about $320 or so a month, maybe more, it is cheaper on the autoship plan though. Some of the food sucks of course but that is trial and error in trying it. I still have some NS food left (mainly the snacks), threw out the expired stuff I never used. I wish I had stuck to it and been more determined, could have been at least 20 pounds lighter now and a 1/4 of the way towards my correct weight per bariatric surgeons I used to type for. ---The crock pot idea is excellent, or maybe frozen diet dinners at the store, I get them a lot but only buy what is on sale, there is this one brand I can get for $1 on sale (Michaelina's lean gourmet), not a huge portion but have that and a vegetable and you are set.

I tried NS and I did lose wt, about 40 lbs. BUT, most of the food tastes like cardboard, there are only a very few that taste good. They are expensive. You also have to supplement with salads (if I recall correctly) and that is another expense. I quit because the salt content is VERY high in their foods and I was starting to have problem with leg/foot swelling. After I quit I also gained back everything I lost and then some. My physician, after the fact, told me to stay away from the on-line diets. If you are looking for nutritious, you will not find them there. Sorry.

Thanks - alias

I appreciate the feedback. Wish I could afford to hire a cook/housekeeper so I could take better care of myself and still work, too. sigh.

cookie diet - sm - mtstudent

I've had a good experience with Smart For Life. It's 6 mostly organic whole grain squares that replace lunch and dinner. The other products like shakes and soups are gross though so stick with the cookies. I picked oatmeal rasin but they also have chocolate chip and blueberry. They are very dry so warm them up for 8 seconds in the microwave and drink them with water or hot tea. You are on your own for dinner though. Sam's Club has frozen chicken breasts, fish, veggies that fit in with their recommendations and there isn't a lot of prep time required. It sounds like a gimmick but it works. I don't follow it 100% but do use them as a meal replacement. I use it in combination with an online calorie counter - myfooddiary.com. It's $9 per month but worth every penny. I have bought memberships for relatives too. It's so easy to use. They have a "fridge" option where you enter certain foods and it keeps the data for you.

There are a lot "real" of reviews of the programs like JC, NS on 3fatchicks.

I hate the taste of artificial sweeteners but dietdirect.com has their own brand of medifast if that interest you. If you call them they will send you samples.

While I'm At It, I Need A Doggie Diet.Jul 02, 2010
Our dog weighs 108 pounds (black lab). She doesn't want to exercise. Won't play anymore. Just lays around. She weighed 96 pounds 2 years ago and at the vet this past winter, she put on the extra 12 pounds during the year. We were only giving her 1 can of dog food and 1 can of dry food (scooped up with a regular veggie size can) a day. She seemed okay with this but still gained weight. We tried cutting back to 1/2 can dog food and dry food, but she wasn't happy 'cau ...

Purina DietOct 17, 2012

So on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again, and that I probably shouldn't because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in intensive care with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both ar ...
