While I'm at it, I need a doggie diet.

Posted: Jul 2, 2010

Our dog weighs 108 pounds (black lab). She doesn't want to exercise. Won't play anymore. Just lays around. She weighed 96 pounds 2 years ago and at the vet this past winter, she put on the extra 12 pounds during the year.

We were only giving her 1 can of dog food and 1 can of dry food (scooped up with a regular veggie size can) a day. She seemed okay with this but still gained weight. We tried cutting back to 1/2 can dog food and dry food, but she wasn't happy 'cause she hates dry food and there wasn't enough 'gravy' in the 1/2 can to hide the taste of the dry food.

My DIL told me her dog was put on a green bean and carrot diet by her vet and lost a lot of weight. Well, we tried that. Not happy-no meat. So we started giving her 1/2 can dog food and a full can of either mixed veggies or green beans. She chows that down in 2 seconds and looks for more. DH can't take the sad eyes or the begging and pawing him for more which, if he wants peace, he gives to her (he spoiled her, not me-lol).

We feed her at the same time we eat. She has also started sitting by the table at dinner hoping for something left over and follows me around while I put the leftovers away. She never used to do this.

BTW, she gets 2 dog buscuits a day, 1 after breakfast and 1 after dinner. Oh, and we also tried to cut out the breakfast meal, but she drives us nuts. She absolutely starving all the time. She is up to date on all shots and vet care, and she's healthy.

Need a filling food that doesn't cost an arm and a leg and will help her lose weight.

Have you seen those ball food dispensers? - Hayseed

I'd put her rations in one of those balls (Buster Cube comes to mind) that they have to roll around and play with in order for it to dispense food. That way she has to work at it to get it, burn calories, and you can still control how much she eats.

:)

Fill one of these suckers with Reeses Pieces and even I'd use it and get a workout for my treats!

But if you've got hardwood floors, you may want to think twice. - What a racket. n/m

LOL! Good point! - Hayseed

I would've never thought of that because (unfortunately!) I don't have any experience with wood floors, just really crappy ones with waaaay past its due carpet and chipped up lineolum square things from like the cold war era. :-D

It's weird, I can never picture big dogs just hanging around in the house either, because I've only ever had little yappy dogs and people around here with big dogs usually use them for working, as opposed to pet-pets and they have kennels and what not, so that's what I had pictured in my mind.
:)

That would be great if she would eat dry food, but she won't. - Backwards Typist

We're on a strict budget and can't afford a lot of extras. I've priced some treats in the stores and they're outrageous.

I will tell DH about this though. It might be a good idea. I'll let HIM pay for it if he wants it. LOL
Thanks

Have you tried a really good food? - sm

God knows I understand living on the cheap, but my particular eaters turn up their nose at most dry foods. However, they love Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. It's probably about 1.5 times the price of Kibbles-n-Bits, etc., but it's got a lot of great flavors in it they seem to like and it's really nourishing, plus it's a great size to get into those balls. Also, because it's fairly rich, they eat less yet still meet their nutritional needs. Also, as a bonus, because of how much of it is non-filler, it also is somewhat low residue, so there's a lot less crapping, which with two dogs and a horse is one of life's little blessings.
Yep. Tried Beneful, Iams, and RR Nutrish. - Backwards Typist

Tried the soft, moist dog foods too, thinking she'd like them.

Thought we had a winner with Nutrish. I had gotten a sample in the mail and she went nuts over it, trying to grab it out of my hand. When I opened it and put it in her bowl, she sniffed it, looked at me as if to say "What the heck is this?" and walked away.

Never heard of the Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul.

You could try cutting down on her normal diet and supplement it with canned pumpkin (not pie filling). It's healthy and filling. Don't be alarmed by the color of her poop!

Rice - K9Lover

Since your baby seems to have a big appetite, maybe if you mix the veggies with rice it would help keep her more satisifed. Many times I will cook rice in chicken broth and mix cooked carrots and broccoli in it. Our dog can smell it cooking and just loves it. You can also add some cooked beef cubes or chicken. Makes a great, easy, tasty meal for humans, too!

Or even mix it in with one of those gravy-canned foods. - n/m

When I have time, I cook up a big batch of either barley or rice. - Backwards Typist

I get about 4-5 servings for her. I need to get some more rice. Almost out, but the last time I looked, the price had doubled since I last bought it and couln't squeeze the extra $$ on that trip. (I only take so much money to the store so I can't overspend).

We were told sweet potatoes would be good for her, but we can't find any. Usually, they only have those around holidays.

As for your suggestions, that does sound yummy. In fact, the canned dog food mixed with veggies looks yummy, too. Just like beef stew without the 'taters. If I was brave enough.....LOL

I wonder if oatmeal would be a good substitute. I would think that would fill her up.

She's almost 8 years old.  She's getting more and more neurotic as the days and weeks go by.  They are a high-strung breed anyway, and when we first got her our vet told us to train her immediately as far as not allowing her to growl when someone was around her food bowl.  She said for me to put my hand in the bowl while the dog was eating to show her I was the dominant one.  I did that.  She seemed to do okay for a year or two but then started becoming really, ...

I Need To Diet And Trying To Get My Own Dietician ToDec 29, 2009
I am overweight, probably on the 60 pounds or more side. I think I look ok when I look in the mirror and then see picture of me and think "who is that?" I have a hospital close by my house and I would like to get a diet that is suitable for me. I have tried WW's, Medifast, Jenny's and the like. Purina DietOct 17, 2012
So I'm at Wal-Mart buying a bag of Purina dog food for my dog. While in the check-out line, a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. Why else would I be buying dog food, RIGHT??? So on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again, and that I probably shouldn't because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in intensive care with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both ar ...

Put My Porker Of A Cat On A Diet And How ItJan 22, 2014
I tried to give that chunky guy some incentive. I even joined him and dieted right along with him. You would think he would say well we both can do this. Noooooooo, that has not happened. I researched, came here, others offered suggestions, bought some nice grain free food, called the company to find out how much to feed him, got him in the habit of going separately in a room to feed, he really takes a couple of bites and ready to leave out and go as fast as he can to where the other cats have f ...

Gluten-Free DietNov 03, 2013
What is all this stuff about gluten being bad for you? Since when? Gluten is only bad for people with celiac disease---and there's a very specific blood test for celiac disease. It doesn't mean gluten causes Celiac disease, it means that people with Celiac disease cannot tolerate gluten. Gluten also doesn't cause any hea ...
