Started a new diet, high in protein and almost

afterwards. I have done real well over the past 3 days, so far, so good but how in the world do I overcome the excessive sleepiness and I mean almost could not keep my eyes open. Thanks.

If it's high protein/low carbs, or if it's Atkins, it's called the "Atkins flu". It's that weird period of time when your body switches from using carbs as fuel to using fat as fuel, and it usually happens after a few days of being on the diet. The bad news is, that it can last for a few days. Some people do say they feel like they have the flu during that time ... super sleepy, foggy headed, no energy, etc. This is totally normal. The good news is, that after it passes, it will almost feel like a light switch has come on - you'll have tons of energy, super clear thinking, almost like you're on a happy pill.

When I went through it, it was absolute HELL for almost a week. I honestly didn't think I was going to make it through. But after that week, holy smokes I feel great now. And the weight loss? TONS. Almost 10 lbs my very first week, and between 3-5 lbs a week after that. No other diet compares to Atkins for weight loss. NONE!

The answer to your question about what to do about the sleepiness: I usually make myself a cup of black coffee or hot tea in the mid afternoon, but definitely early enough so that it doesn't affect my sleep at night. It helps a little just for a little "boost" until bedtime.

Are you able to take a short nap? I get done with my work day at about 2:00 and I try and nap for about half an hour, just to take the edge off. Just a little cat nap helps a lot.

The Atkins diet is the only one that has worked for me. I am short and tend to be stocky, so I have to watch my weight. I have done Atkins a couple of times and it really does work!

just be careful, try to get your cholesterol checked, if you can. The diet works, but my doctor very nearly put me on cholesterol meds after a high-protein diet.

Take a nap? Nope, would have to die before I could get off from work for an hour or so during a work day.

I do not have anything other than the excessive sleepiness. I have energy after I can free my head from the desktop! I hope this will work. Posted earlier about my porker of a cat and he and I both are on diets as I type. Thanks folks.

When I stopped eating carbs and changed to fats and proteins, it took awhile for my body to start using fat for energy instead of carbs. It's called carb flu, lethargy, brain fog. How long it lasts depends on how clean your diet was when you started. Mine lasted a couple of weeks. The withdrawal from sugar is not easy, but so worth it. Hang in there, it gets better!
