Need opinions/help what to do about a puppy

Posted: Nov 18, 2009

We had a black lab puppy show up at our house about 12 days ago.  I have drove around looking for signs for a missing dog (small community) and nothing.   I have been feeding this little angel because I CANNOT starve a dog no matter who it might belong to. It had a collar on (no tags) but the collar was so tight on his neck that I waited but finally changed it out.  I have come to find out that a 4th grader on my kids bus says the dog is his.  I told the kiddos to tell him then to come get the doggie (no  I really do not want him too but I don't want to "take" someone's dog from the either).  Seven days....... no one has come got the dog (I call him Buddy).  The same kiddo then griped that we changed his collar (from red to blue - got it at Tractor Supply). Again, no one comes to get the doggie!

I am not sure at this point what to do.  I love animals and not one will starve for anything (food or love) as long as I am alive.

I will add this... the last 2 nights have been cold here.  He wanted to come in and I let him (and a few chewed shoes later), he managed to edge his way into the bottom portion of my bed and is snoozing.

What do I do?

If you know who the parents are of this boy who says the puppy is his I would try to contact them and find out if indeed it really IS their puppy? I can't imagine a child who has lost a dog who wouldn't be so excited to have found it that they wouldn't go home all excited and not give the parents a minute's rest until the dog/puppy was back home again. Since it's a small town you might also put up a notice in your local grocery store about having found this puppy.

I have seen this happen, personally. A man brought a doggie into a non-kill humane society and said his son had left the doggie at his home. He was asked if he had been feeding, etc to which the guy said yes. He was then told he was considered the owner and if he left it there the owner surrender animals were the first to be put down. This place puts the animals down on a weekly basis, it is terrible. If you cannot find his real owner after checking and putting out flyers at grocery stores, animal control,, where ever you can place them, then put up ad for doggie on Craig's List if you have that close by or get word out that you have the doggie up for adoption. Good luck with that.

I'm not a lawyer but I would think if you ran a notice in your local paper with the description of the doggie and said that the owner could claim him by giving a description, if no one came forward he would be your doggie.

We live on a main highway and I am so sick of having people drop their unwanted animals at our doorstep. We can't keep them all. At one time someone dropped a pregnant cat who dropped 8 kittens a few days later, all females. We paid to have them all spayed. Cost us a bloody fortune! Once someone dropped a pit bull and that dang dog wouldn't let us get out of our own truck in our own driveway. We had to go to where we could get a signal on our cell phone to call county animal control. Couldn't go in the house until the officer arrived. After he got the animal in his truck the officer said he would rather have tried to deal with a mountain lion. He later said they euthenized (sp?) the dog as a dangerous animal. Irresponsible pet owners are high on my list of despicable people!!

Oh, and another thing - Animal lover

For some reason, some people think animals are resistant to the cold. They are not and get cold also. If you cannot provide some housing for him outside with something warm like straw, I would have to bring him inside. It is only humane to do so. Thank you for feeding and caring about this little boy!

Sounds to me like you have a new dog. - Congrats! nm

Is a vet visit in your budget? - Happy MT Robin

[ In Reply To ..]
Your vet will be able to tell if he's okay physically, but they'll also be able to tell if the dog is microchipped.

If the dog is NOT microchipped, all bets are off. Even if someone does come up at this point and say that the dog is theirs, they'd have to have some pretty good way to prove it. And then you'd have a decision to make. Do you spend the $$ and microchip him yourself or not?

I'm with you, though, on not wanting it to go back to its other owner. If the collar was as tight as it was, that means there was serious inattention bordering on neglect.

I think the dog is yours now if you want to keep him.

Well still nothing. I took him to the vet this afternoon since he could fit me in and he knows that I have 4 other dogs and I did not want them winding up sick. He says he is in perfect health. Went ahead and did the shots he needs. I cannot afford the microchip at this point but will after Christmas. Thanks for all the responses!

Just wanted to let everyone know that taking him to a pound was NEVER an option. I have 2 rescued dogs from the pound and if I had the time and room, I would take on a dozen more. :)

PS I guess I got an early Christmas present and one of the best ones ever!

Need Puppy Advice!Jan 10, 2011
I need some advice! we adoped a beautiful 6 week old puppy, golden/yellow lab mix. When we went to pick her up at the home of the owner, there was 1 puppy left (out of a litter of 13!) whose family had backed out and didn't want her. My hubby decided we couldn't leave her there alone and so we took her too. Now we have 2 8 week old puppies (females). We are presently crate-training but only using 1 crate as we were only expecting to bring home one dog. They are doing fine, except havin ...

Smelly Puppy. Mixed Breed.Jun 12, 2011
Went to shower yesterday and people had new pet puppy, mixed undetermined breed.  It smelled so bad. They said puppy was bathed and they didn't know what to do about the odor.  Someone said it was maybe the breed.  Anyone ever heard of a breed of a dog just giving off an unpleasant odor? ...

ANIMAL PLANET'S PUPPY BOWL X (2014)Feb 03, 2014
Did any of you watch Puppy Bowl X on the Animal Planet channel?  It was SO adorable, and all of the 4-legged participants are rescue pups and have been adopted.  I love all of these little creatures, but my favorite is Mandy, a Dachshund.  You can go to the Animal Planet website and vote for your favorite MVP after every airing of the show.   It is sure to bring some much-needed smiles to your face. ...

I have a friend I just connected with who lives across the country.  She lived next door to me.  We grew up together, played together, and went to school together.  Went to her wedding and then she moved and I lost touch.  Anyway (sorry to get side tracked, that has nothing to do with my post).  Anyway…when I told her what I do (MT), she told me her daughter took 3 classes but couldn’t afford to finish the training, and asked me my opinions of the MT field a ...

Need Some Opinions Please!!Feb 15, 2010
I have had a lot of problems with my breasts over the years, have had 3 biopsies in the left and 1 in the right but thank God they have all be negative.  However, over the last several weeks I have been experiencing something different, pain and burning in my right breast along with swelling (not a lot but enough for me to notice).  I have performed self-examinations and other than exquisite tenderness throughout the breast I cannot find any masses (I actually do have a 6 mm nodul ...

Opinions - Is He Just Not That Into Me - Or Something Else? SmMay 17, 2010
Ok... so I met this guy about a month ago - I am the one going out with a guy almost 11 years younger.  He's a very nice guy! Every time I see him he is nice and we talk literally for hours.  He told me off the bat he is not much of a phone person so he doesn't call much, but he sends a few texts every day.  At first he wanted to see me several days a week... one of my friends called him my "boyfriend" though and I think it freaked him out. He had told me he was definite ...

I Could Use Some Opinions Jun 25, 2010
Hey everyone, this is my first time posting on this board, but I thought I'd see if I could get some input. My ex husband met this woman and moved her in with him after only knowing her for 1-1/2 months. I wasn't real thrilled with the idea because we have two kids and joint custody, so they spend half their time at their dad's. Honestly, I was feeling a little jealous about some other woman spending time with my kids. I met her and she seemed nice, so I got used to the idea and ...

So, my daughter, who is 9, had all sorts of ear problems, stayed on antibiotics and had to get tubes, whcih stayed in for only 3 weeks and I opted not to get the procedure again.  She finally grew out of it.  My son, he is 13 and never had ear problems.  A month ago though he got a case of Sterp and ended up with a ruptured eardrum.  The doctor told me to take him to ENT to make sure the ear perforation healed after the one round of antibiotics.  Took him to ENT and it h ...

Opinions, PleaseMay 26, 2013
Hi all, What do you think about people who pray for, what I term, silly things? Like what color drapes to buy, what shoes to wear that day, etc. I find it rather silly because people have to take controls over their own lives. I do not believe in "handing everything over" to the higher power. Our higher power (who I term God) gave us brains and will and power to make decisions. I don't call this an abuse of prayer, I just don't understand why some people can't think for themsel ...

Opinions From Cat PeopleJan 03, 2012
I need a serious opinion.  We have friends who have 2 cats, full-breed, who they have had daily bonding with for a good 2 years.  Said friends are going on a 3-month trip out of the country and are boarding the cats here in the states.  The one cat (before owners have even left) is showing signs of something isn't right--getting out of the house and not duly returning home, peeing smack dab on top of the bed.).   These cats are brother and sister, and will be somewh ...

Need Opinions Please About School (sm)Jan 24, 2011
I am currently looking into returning to school like so many other MTs out there.  There are programs where you can get an Associates Degree in Healthcare Management (basically medical records), which I am really not interested in because, as I see it, most hospitals are trying to cut down their medical records departments to as slim of staff as possible, plus with the integration of EMR, I just do not see this being a lucrative field.  IF, big big IF here, I were to enter into this pr ...

Some Opinions On This Situation Jul 29, 2011
I live in a semidetached neighborhood and the neighbors on one side constantly burn a fire pit with wood pallets and whatever in it all the time at least 4 to 5 times a week.  Well our cars next door are covered with ashes from their fire pit and we have new cars.  We have talked to them about this but it does not good.  Any sugestions.  It isnt even worth washing these cars anymore and also you need to keep your windows closed because all the smoke comes in the house.  ...

Carpet - Need OpinionsMar 06, 2010
Need carpet that will wear well and stand up to cats (with claws), hairballs, etc. We looked at nylon carpet, but that is too pricey. They suggested polyesther but the reviews on Google are not encouraging. Our hallway is 20 feet x 4 feet and takes a lot of traffic, and we also need to replace the carpeting in the family room and bedrooms. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks ...

Opinions About My ChildMay 21, 2010
I am not sure what to do about my child and would like opinions on who to see or what.  When my son was around 5 years old, we lived in a house and he would say he "saw people" in the house.  I would see him standing there and he would jump as if something startled him, but of course nothing was there.  It got to the point that I couldn't even step out on the front porch without him being right under me, afraid to be inside by himself.  Well, later on, my 16-year-ol ...
