Some opinions on this situation

I live in a semidetached neighborhood and the neighbors on one side constantly burn a fire pit with wood pallets and whatever in it all the time at least 4 to 5 times a week. Well our cars next door are covered with ashes from their fire pit and we have new cars. We have talked to them about this but it does not good. Any sugestions. It isnt even worth washing these cars anymore and also you need to keep your windows closed because all the smoke comes in the house. This gets extremely tiresome all the time. Would appreciate any input into this situation.

A lot of times you can't burn anything within city limits. If not, I don't really know.

I don't know if you are the original poster or someone different stirring up trouble. It's like a grinch has come to live on the board.

So what if she posted the message again. Maybe different people are reading it now and will give her some suggestions. People can post whatever they want here and they shouldn't be worried about other posters copying other messages and calling them a grinch. Do you even know what a grinch is?

I'm not sure which department. I would start with the police. First, if there are fire codes and they are in violation. Second it's a health hazard as if the smoke is coming in your home that is posing a health hazard to you and your family.

I would call the fire marshall and here are my reasons why:

1. The Fire Marshall has the authority to cite someone for a fire hazard. If the ashes are ending up on your car the it is possible sparks, embers, etc. are blowing also, which could result in trees, dry grass, roofs, etc. catching on fire from live embers smoldering on them.

2. Fire Departments also have Haz-mat units who could also determine and cite for any haz-mat violations such as what is on those pallets that are being burned, what were they used to store, etc. Did you know that cancer is presumptive workman's comp. for all fire fighters because of the chemicals they are exposed to from burning materials. What just looks like a pallet could have a multitude of various types of chemicals on it that are toxic when burned.

It will only take a phone call from the privacy of your home with no police showing up, etc. to get your concerns out there and your questions answered.

I do know the DEP does not allow burning of pallets. They can be recycled or put in the trash but not burnt and that is probably why. Good thing you mentioned that. It is difficult to have these firepits without getting smoke and embers on nearby houses when you live so close to people. There must be a way to have things to burn that dont cause these problems but I have no clue. I dont do this so I never checked into it. You are right I see the embers flying up in the air when they throw branches on the fire and they dont put a screen over it. Very scary.

to heat their home in the winter using wood pellets; however, their smoke stack was coming out of the side of their house and did not rise above the other surrounding houses, so the smoke and ash was being blown back into a neighbor's windows and home. The neighbor using a heat pump system for heating his house so basically the pump was pumping in all the smoke and their house smelled like a BBQ.

Long story short, the neighbor went to the city council with his grievance. The city council told him that there was nothing in the city ordinances that said homeowners could not use a woodburning stove or anything that specified how tall the smokestack needs to be. However, they said if he could prove that this was a health hazard, then the council would have grounds to force the homeowner to modify his piping. They also decided because of this incident to enact a new city ordinance that says if a homeowner uses any type of woodburning stove to heat their homes, their smokestack needs to be a certain amount of feet taller than the rooftops of neighboring homes to avoid this problem in the future. However, they couldn't make the new ordinance retroactive, so the suffering neighbor still needs to prove a health hazard.

Hi all, What do you think about people who pray for, what I term, silly things? Need carpet that will wear well and stand up to cats (with claws), hairballs, etc. We looked at nylon carpet, but that is too pricey. They suggested polyesther but the reviews on Google are not encouraging.
