So, my daughter, who is 9, had all sorts of ear problems, stayed on antibiotics and had to get tubes, whcih stayed in for only 3 weeks and I opted not to get the procedure again. She finally grew out of it. My son, he is 13 and never had ear problems. A month ago though he got a case of Sterp and ended up with a ruptured eardrum. The doctor told me to take him to ENT to make sure the ear perforation healed after the one round of antibiotics. Took him to ENT and it had healed, but she said there was still fluid in there and she put another tube in.
He went to followup two weeks later, tube had fallen out. She said there is still a little fluid in there and his hearing in that ear is 35 (21-45 indicates mild hearing loss) but we don't notice any change in his hearing in general. So, she wants to put another larger tube in and she even told me this would be a possible 2-3-year process with continuing to put tubes in and continuing with anesthesia. He has no ear complaints, no hearing complaints now.
I actually type for an ENT and I know that a kid usually has to have many problems to justify the tubes and when child's doctor was filling out form, she asked me how long he had this problem and I said a month and she said ...."Oh, well he probably had it a lot longer, you know how kids don't tell us these things" and I don't even know how long she wrote that he had the problem.
Anyway, she scheduled the surgery and I am thinking about cancelling it. He has only had this ONE ear problem, had ONE round of antibiotics and it is allergy season right now, so some congestion in the ear could be more difficult to clear out at this time. Any opinions on if I am doing the right thing? I don't know why she would, but it seems like she just is too eager for surgery or my liking and I don't want to go through a couple of years of this when he has no problems. The mild hearing loss I suppose would be a problem, but does anyone know if it is possible for that to clear up on its own?
Thanks for the info.
