Smelly puppy. Mixed breed.

Posted: Jun 12, 2011

Went to shower yesterday and people had new pet puppy, mixed undetermined breed.  It smelled so bad. They said puppy was bathed and they didn't know what to do about the odor.  Someone said it was maybe the breed.  Anyone ever heard of a breed of a dog just giving off an unpleasant odor?

Bloodhounds have an unpleasant odor to them. I have one. You have to bathe them all the time. Really love the breed for their disposition, but that is what you have to deal with when you have one. You have to constantly wipe their faces from the drool and wash their faces and ears daily or they smell quicker. You definitely could tell if it had bloodhound in it by the distinct features.

I immediately think of Phoebe from "Friends" and her ditty "Smelly Cat."

Any breed with skin folds might be "smelly" (yeast infections). Maybe the puppy has a skin fungus or parasites? Or, maybe the puppy had been sprayed by a skunk before "the human" brought him home?

I think the Basenji is odorless and does not shed.

Maybe the puppy has an ear infection. Ear infections in dogs can really cause an ugly smell. Check the ears to see if there is any brown, smelly debris. If so, off to the vet.

There are pet shampoos/sprays you can use that work better than others. There could be a health issue worth taking care of, too.

We have a lab, stunk bad, finally figured it had to the dog food, switched her to Wellness, no more smell. Have since switched her to Iams due to need to save some money, and still no horrible smell. Some dog foods make the dogs smell more than others (comes out thru the dog's pores or something like that)

My dog turned fishy from her food - DirtyOldLady

We had tried a new organic food on her, main ingredient was salmon, and after a few bowls she started stinking like an unwashed you-know-what. Even her poos smelled like the fish market. PeeYew coming and going. We actually took the unused portion of food back for a refund .. couldn't live with the odor she gave off.

All dogs have anal glans that give off a musky stink, but usually only if they are clogged or infected will we smell them. The glands help them with the poop process too. Signs: licking, butt scooting across your carpet, butt rubbing on your leg, shoe... strong odor around behind and tail and secretions from anus.

When the gland is infected or clogged, you definitely have a very stinky and probably unhappy and itchy dog. With training from your vet, you can learn how to express this gland at home, and can do it when you bathe your dog.

There are NOT any specific stinky breeds, I mean like always skunky smelling. (yes certain breeds are smellier than others) All dogs get smelly depending on their environment, wellness, diet, activity level etc. If they are outdoor dogs, they ger more stinky. Basenji dogs are NOT odorless.

I agree with the ear infection suggestion also. That is a fact. Check out whosyadoggy.com about breed info. It may help. Hope your friend's dog is okay.

Smelly TowelsJun 16, 2011
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the musty smell out of towels?  These are not old soggy towels.  I've had then for a couple of months and have tried soaking my washer with a bleach solution, vinegar, baking soda.  Washing the towels in boiling water (pouring pots into the machine), hot water, dilute bleach, vinegar, baking soda, hanging them outside in the scorching sun, but when I towel off after a shower I can still smell musty smell. I had thrown out all my towel ...

Dying Breed - Who Killed the Responsible Republican? Bill Kristol, of course. By Jacob WeisbergUpdated Saturday, April 17, 2010, at 7:14 AM ET Do you remember the Responsible Republicans? In the 1980s, small herds of them still roamed freely around Washington. In 1982, they stampeded over Ronald Reagan's veto of the largest tax increase in history to mitigate the fiscal harm of his 1981 tax cut. In 1983, they converged on Capitol Hill to pass a package of tax increases and benefit c ...

A Question About Dog BreedJun 01, 2010
Can anyone tell me for sure if the Jack Russell Terrier is the same breed as the Parson Russell Terrier?  One kennel club says they just changed the name of the breed.  I heard Ed Bivens of the American Kennel Club say they are two different breeds.  To me they look exactly the same.  Not too many years back they referred to this dog in the dog shows as the Parson Russell Terrier instead of the Jack Russell.  If, indeed they are two different breeds, why would they ...

Need Opinions/help What To Do About A PuppyNov 18, 2009
We had a black lab puppy show up at our house about 12 days ago.  I have drove around looking for signs for a missing dog (small community) and nothing.   I have been feeding this little angel because I CANNOT starve a dog no matter who it might belong to. It had a collar on (no tags) but the collar was so tight on his neck that I waited but finally changed it out.  I have come to find out that a 4th grader on my kids bus says the dog is his.  I told the kiddos to tell him th ...

I need some advice! we adoped a beautiful 6 week old puppy, golden/yellow lab mix. South Carolina Lt. Gov.
