Did I mention how tired I am because of this? I knew puppies were a lot of work, but this seems silly. My typos prove it...

Puppy potty training - MT

Having a puppy is a lot of work. They are just like babies and they cannot go 8 hours without going to the bathroom. Do you work full-time? Maybe you get someone to come over during the day and let the puppy out. Also, at night you could try taking him/her on a long walk before bed and that might help. I babysat for my niece's puppy a couple of weeks ago and although she was a little older and already potty trained, it was like watching a toddler. We always got our puppies at a time where the kids were home on a break from school or one of us could take vacation so we could let them out constantly and they learn faster. Also, what breed of dog is your puppy?

how old is your puppy? You are stressing out - too much about this SM

and the pup can pick up on that stress. Relax. Get some of those puppy pads until your pup is trained. Also, how long are you leaving him/her in the crate? It sounded like most of the time but I may have read that wrong. I hope so anyway. I had a "puppy from hell" PFH (which is what English Setter pups are called :) We made a very secure playpen area in my room for him until he grew up a bit. Still able to interact and be part of the family, just secured.
I don't believe you can properly train if you only use a crate - IheartWheatenTerriers

I'm still trying to train my eh, hem, puppy at 18 months of age. I feel I really made a mistake by using a crate too soon. She learned to only go on soft fabric (on the floor of the crate because I wanted to cushion her tushie while she was in it) and she also learned she didn't want anybody watching her when she did go. Since I tossed the crate and confine her to a bathroom with vinyl floors overnight and lots of going outside to my back porch (where I keep several puppy pads), she has stopped peeing my rugs and couch, but she still won't go if anyone is watching, which means I can't walk her and expect her to eliminate. She has actually started nudging me to ask to be let out, so I have hope she will be housebroken before she gets arthritis from old age. good luck to you.

I had a boxer and what I used to do was take her outside every couple of hours and consistently say "let's go poopy" so she would associate going out with meaning it was time to poop and pee. Then, I would walk her around until she did her business. She got to the point as she got older, she would come find me and let me know she had to go. After she was trained, she never went inside the house again.

I agree with the poster who suggested a walk before bedtime, and I feel it's critical not to leave them in a crate. Sounds like your pup is in the crate way too long.

let me start over... - OP

Ok, after reading my post, I realized I wasn't asking exactly what I was meaning to! I've done my homework, this isn't my first dog. BTW, he's an english bulldog, and I know they can be stubborn anyway! He is a baby, and we are being patient with him, my big concern is how much he is pooping! I'm not sure if it's normal (we're going to the vet monday, so I will bring it up!) it might be the food? Or maybe it's completely normal and I just don't remember it being like this. So...

I do work full time M-F and I'm off on the weekends. My hubby is home two days during the week, so at most it is 3 days that he might be crated a little longer, but my hubby works close by and comes to let him out in the middle of the day. Otherwise i take him out at least once an hour and always right after eating, sleeping and waking up. This is the main issue...after taking him out multiple multiple times he may or may not do his business, but i always make sure he poops before we go to bed. This is usually 10:30, or if DH stays up later he'll take him out before he goes to bed, even if the dog is sleeping already. I get up in the middle of the night to take him out again, usually about 1 or 2, but no matter what there is always poop in the crate and he steps in it, lays in it, smears it all around requiring a bath and me cleaning the crate. He goes out then and back in his crate to sleep. From everything I have read, bulldogs do best being crate trained, they like having their own "house". After all that I get up at about 5 and again the crate and dog are covered in poo. So we do it all over again...and i take him out after feeding him and he poops again! This just seems like an excessive amount of pooping, and it doesn't seem like there is a way around it. Between the dog and my two kids (6 & 1 1/2) I feel like i'm cleaning poo constantly!! Is this normal?? I should note that we also tried putting up a baby gate type area in the kitchen with puppy pads (which I am against, I don't see how it doesn't encourage the to go in the house) but we were desperate so we tried it and same thing, left for a few hours and came home to poop all over the kitchen floor which took me an hour to clean and he completely trashed the puppy pads...shredded and ate them even though he had plenty of toys.

Sorry this is so long, I just feel like I'm at a loss. I feel like i am doing everything right from what I know. We can't be home 24/7 and i know i'm not the first person to have a puppy without being home all the time. It's just a whole lot of Poop!! So, if anyone has suggestions on that, please help, or give your experience if your dogs go this much. he is not over fed, like i said i am limiting it and trying to schedule it so this doesn't happen and to try to control the poop more! Just going one day at a time! thanks for all your help!

too much poo - lexluther

That's a lot of poop! Are you sure his crate is not too big for him? Puppies are supposed to be clean and want to keep "their" area clean. If his crate is too big, that may be encouraging him to potty in the crate. You can try using a piece of wood as a divider until he grows into his crate. The trainers I've worked with are all against potty pads. They all say that it does encourage them to potty in the house. I would make also sure you're feeding him a high-quality dog food. You can ask your vet which brand he thinks might be best. For instance, my dogs pooped a ton when I fed them Iams, but I switched to Nutro and that cut it down some. Or your vet may recommend some kind of special intestinal diet food for him. To me, it sounds like he's going too much, but it sounds like you're doing everything right as far as how often and when you're taking him out, so I would definitely talk to the vet about it.

Thanks! - OP

We started off with a crate way too huge, but I was putting dividers in it to make it his size. I was told to use boxes to divide it, and since i have a 1 1/2 yr old I had plenty of diaper boxes to do it with! It didn't stop him, he would poo right in that little area which amazed me, he didn't seem to care! One morning I came down and found him in a clean crate! I was so happy, but after bringing him out I realized he had got up on the boxes (I don't even know how it was possible as there wasn't much room between the box and top of the crate) but he went and did his business up there! At least he didn't lay in it. Now we have a much much smaller crate, I think the smallest size they make and I still had to divide that in half and he still goes it it! As for food, we are using a higher quality, not cheap "holistic" all natural brand from PetCo. This is recommended for bullies, but I'm wondering if that has something to do with it! I guess I'll ask the vet on Monday. We haven't had him too long, and I thought he just needed time to adjust, but I thought it would have started to taper off by now. I'm trying to be patient, but like I said, it's tiring! I'll keep working on it though. Thanks for your thoughts!

Sounds like a lot - No expert, but...

Having had dogs almost my entire life, and usually the one in charge of poop patrol, to me it sounds like this little guy is going way too much. Then again, I never had a bulldog. The only times I recall having a similar problem, my dogs had intestinal worms. No issues after treatment. I hope it is something as simple as that in your case.

Poop - MT

I didn't think about the food since it is a puppy. When I put my dog on a quality dog food without so much filler in it, her poop got so much smaller. Better ask your vet about that though because puppies have special nutritional needs. Good luck!

We went to the vet yesterday. I told her about the issue we're having and she didn't seem to think it was a huge deal. She said maybe the food has too much fiber in it. I was trying to avoid the brands with the fills and use the more natural stuff, but then the vet suggested Iams, Purina, etc. We went back to PetCo yesterday and checked the fiber content and it was at most 3%, similiar to everything else. We are going to try a different brand of the natural stuff and see what happens, gradually changing it obviously. She said everything else sounds right, so we just have to try different until something works. We'll see...
