What's the best canned puppy food?

Posted: Jul 30, 2012

We just got an 8-week old golden retriever puppy and he's not eating much dry puppy food so wondering if boosting it with a canned food would help. Any recommendations on the best canned puppy food? TIA

I love this website. You can compare wet, dry, puppy, adult... It's awesome.

Personally, I recommend Blue Buffalo products. We've had great luck with those with our pets.

Congrats on the puppy!!!

I agree with Blue Buffalo being a good food. There are a lot of really good puppy and dog foods. Be aware that corn is a potential allergen, and things like animal "by products" or "meal" may be made of ground up dead animals.

Dogs are carnivorous and need good meat. They don't demand variety; they like the same thing all the time, but once you start adding stuff in, they will expect it. I found this out the hard way, and my dogs won't eat the dry stuff because I started adding things like cooked ground turkey, wet dog food and green beans, and that's what they now expect.

I also started giving them a treat every afternoon when they were puppies, so they have come to expect this. So, every day at 3PM, they remind me.

I also gave them a treat whenever they would bark at the neighbor. My intention was to get them to be quiet. However, they thought they were being rewarded and they now believe that they should receive a "reward" every time they bark at the neighbor.

It helps to try to think like a dog.

Thanks so much for the suggestion of Blue Buffalo - that's one I've never tried on any of the dogs we have. Will check it out. Thanks again for taking the time out of your busy day to answer this one for me.

The website mentioned is a good site to compare. You can also add a teaspoon of yogurt. Blue Buffalo is a good food, but it gave a couple of my dogs gas, lol. It is a good food, though! Currently I am feeding my dogs Canidae, which is loaded with probiotics. It cannot be found at PetSmart or Petco, so you'd have to find a local retailer, but it is a little cheaper than some of the other natural foods. I am happy with it for my dog with sensitive skin. It's an all life stages food. I'm not sure if they have canned. I usually add something like yogurt or even pumpkin (good for diarrhea OR constipation or even every day) or other dog-friendly foods in moderation maybe once a day and the rest of the time they get dry food only.

I had forgotten to also mention the pumpkin and yogurt. I often add that in with my dogs' food as well. My dogs love the plain yogurt. I also made them "brownies" with yogurt, pumpkin, eggs, ground turkey, and a little oatmeal. They will get diarrhea with rapid changes in diet, so I give them a little bit of these every day. Whenever you make changes to the dog's diet, do it slowly in order to avoid digestive upset.

I noticed there is a new dog "ice cream" available, which also contains yogurt.

Enjoy your new puppy! Like children, they "grow up" way too quickly. My fur babies are almost 12.

ahh, yes, thanks Alice - doglover

Definitely PLAIN yogurt, I meant, and always introduce slowly :). I forgot to say those two important things. My dogs are a little over 1 and the other is 10 months. The 10-month-old still has a sensitive stomach. You can email me too for other questions and I may already have researched and have some opinion/advice (not claiming it's the RIGHT way, lol)

Canned Frosting Fudge Recipes (see Message)Nov 22, 2010
Last year around this time, a poster was kind enough to post several recipes for quick-and-easy fudge that could be made with a can of frosting and a couple of other ingredients.  I was wondering if anyone happened to save those, or if that poster is still around if they would be kind enough to repost the recipes? Last year I was way too broke to make any holiday treats but this year is MUCH better (hallelujah, LOL!), and I remember those recipes sounded very tasty and simple. TIA to anyo ...

Need Opinions/help What To Do About A PuppyNov 18, 2009
We had a black lab puppy show up at our house about 12 days ago.  I have drove around looking for signs for a missing dog (small community) and nothing.   I have been feeding this little angel because I CANNOT starve a dog no matter who it might belong to. It had a collar on (no tags) but the collar was so tight on his neck that I waited but finally changed it out.  I have come to find out that a 4th grader on my kids bus says the dog is his.  I told the kiddos to tell him th ...

Need Puppy Advice!Jan 10, 2011
I need some advice! we adoped a beautiful 6 week old puppy, golden/yellow lab mix. When we went to pick her up at the home of the owner, there was 1 puppy left (out of a litter of 13!) whose family had backed out and didn't want her. My hubby decided we couldn't leave her there alone and so we took her too. Now we have 2 8 week old puppies (females). We are presently crate-training but only using 1 crate as we were only expecting to bring home one dog. They are doing fine, except havin ...

Update On Dog Food...no Go.Mar 21, 2011
Won't touch the 4Health or Taste of the Wild. So, we're done spending a fortune on dog food. We're going back to Beneful. It seems to be the only thing she likes. Cat With Possible Food Allergies?Apr 24, 2013
Does anyone have a cat with food allergies?  My white/tabby mix seems to always be itching but does not have fleas.  His white ears are frequently pink and warm and he scratches quite a bit.  Last night I noticed him licking his belly and it, too, was quite pink. We have been round and round with this kitty since we inherited him from my MIL.  He was always a puker and I have improved that condition with different food and hairball treats, but I'm wondering if the pukin ...

Dog Food RecallsSep 04, 2013
I don't know how many people follow the recalls but I need to warn you about another dog food that's NOT on recall. . . Beneful dog food...  Sadly, our baby had ALL of these symptoms, not in order, not daily, and not all of them, so her symptoms weren't recognized. Well, the very next day, DH went to get Blue Buffalo and instead came home with a 5 lb. bag of 4health ($6) and Taste of the Wild  ($12) instead (he always listens to sales people). We started her on 4health and she didn't touch it the first day unless we put in 1/2 can of wet and veggies. The second day she ate it with no problem. She also seems to be 'full' after eating and isn't crying or whining. The next day, she didn't even touch her breakfast until after lun ...

About Picking Up Restautant Food And TipMay 10, 2010
We were talking at my office about picking up restautant food, and whether or not a tip is justified. Example, if you call in an order to a restaurant like Claim Jumper (citing an example a co-worker used) and you swing by to pick it up on the way home, would you tip? Technically, you're not in the restaurant and getting service. Typically, a tip is given due to the service provided by the waitstaff. I said maybe one would be justified if you stayed parked and they brought it to you. I usua ...

Food For Thought..I Found This To Be A Jun 25, 2012
very interesting insight... When I was a child growing up in the late 1940s and early 1950s one of my favorite radio programs was the continuing saga of The Lone Ranger. I would huddle next to the radio every night to follow the adventures of the Lone Ranger and his faithful companion, Tonto. Unfortunately, the program aired just about my bed time and, as often as not, my parents would insist that I miss part of the program and keep to the schedule they'd deemed appropriate. One nigh ...
