Knee pain

Posted: Jun 20, 2013

Have been told by orthopod that I have bone-on-bone in my right knee.  He suggested surgery and gave me Tramadol for the pain.  Surgery is not an option financially at this time.  I have been losing weight in order to take some of  the pressure off.  I cannot take the Tramadol and work because it makes me sleepy.    Cannot take NSAIDs because of the GI side effects.

Any suggestions on how to deal?

TIA

I've tried several herbal and homeopathic things. - SM

As far as I know, nothing is going to help relieve the bone on bone contact pain dramatically. The only thing that may help are various remedies for the tissue around the bone. Research these suggestions and see if you think any are appropriate for you.

I'm currently seeing a Chinese medicine doctor for acupuncture and she will give me some herbs to help with pain and to help slow down the degeneration of other bone that has started. I do not want surgery, it's also not an option for me at this time, as well as it's not really guaranteed to help. The first and second treatments helped me these past 2 weeks, and will start the herbs after menstruation, as the herbs work on the kidney/GU meridian and is too much on the system at once.

Arnica gel may help, by itself or in any type of blend, such as Peaceful Mountain brand Sciatic Rescue. This is wonderful for soft tissue bruising or injury.

Super Blue Stuff is an emu oil formulation which is supposed to be good for pain and swelling. TCM doctor uses this on me after puncture session. I may switch to an emu oil-based preparation, but it's supposed to be a pure form of oil, watch carefully what you buy so it's not cheap or refined too much to make it ineffective.

Chamomile cream or gel is supposed to help bring blood flow to the joint and reduce swelling in painful areas.

OA pain relief with a new more absorbable form of the traditional Indian medicinal herb curcumin combined with black pepper. Consult with a nutritionally-trained practitioner who is current on this data for a specific program. **this might not be good for the OP as it may cause GI upset. It did for me.

It's pretty much trial and error as to what will work for each individual.

Cinnamon and honey is supposed to help; has to be natural/organic/raw honey and I believe Ceylon cinnamon which has a higher concentration of the antiinflammatory element.

Apple cider vinegar, 2 tsp in 8 oz water, maybe add honey.

Shark cartilage supplement and omega-3. Glucosamine and chondroitin with MSM.

Western medicine doesn't do anything for me anymore, so I had to try something else = TCM and herbs.

Hope some of this is useful for you.

THANK YOU - anon

I too do NOT want any more ortho surgeries. Over the years, I have had 4. NO MORE!!!

Will read up on your suggestions.

It is nice to have somebody that is going through the same thing. Just not the pain. HA.

funny thing, my chiro suggested accupuncture. May give that a try.

Couple of suggestions - Bilboa

Greetings, fellow sufferer!

1. Ice -- Google around for the wraps they give people after surgery. They hold ice packs and have Velcro closures. (One warning -- if you're looking at the ones at Colonial Assisted [sic] Devices, the wrap itself is fine but the ice packs are absolute garbage -- to say they don't last is an understatement. But you can buy ice packs anywhere.) I find that if I put a wrap on the knee when I go to bed, my body heat melts the ice, of course, but then it essentially turns into a heat wrap... the combo definitely helps! You could probably jerry-rig something pretty similar with a couple bags of frozen peas and a good wide Ace wrap.

2. Voltaren gel (topical) would be worth a try.

3. Of course there are steroid injections, but being an MT, you already know all about those.

- I have a small bath salt business and use a lot of herb products for pain - we make a cayenne salve (I have bad knees from a car accident years ago, getting worse as I get older)...MSM is another good product, the best stuff found was from Canada. Tiger Balm is wonderful, too - it's pricy but you get what you pay for. Good luck. I make bath pain bath salts, muscle soaks, and just relaxing salts - aromatherapy (balneotherapy) is an amazing thing. http://www.houseonthehillbathsalts.com - I am still working on the site, but will be posting properties of different herbs soon, ingested and topical.

no cow's milk/dairy products - worked for me

I quit dairy 5 years ago and never looked back. Used to have knee pain. Had a hard time getting up off the floor without lots of groaning and struggle. Not so now! Can get up off the floor in a flash now. Try it.

I use almond milk for cereal, but really stopped eating much cereal. I try to eat whole foods as they are in nature and nothing packaged. Turkey I roast myself and salads and fruit. Not so much grains or starches. No red meat and no chicken from the supermarkup.

Your losing weight is a very good idea. It will affect you dramatically overall.

You might also want to get a mini trampoline for bone health and for draining of lymph nodes. The "give" is good for your joints.

Hope you feel better soon.

I think all docs are surgery-happy and drug-happy. They don't address the cause of anything; just the symptoms.

Our diet is so important to our health. It's the basis for good health. Good luck!

Knee InjectionsOct 21, 2009
Have you ever had Synvisc, Euflexxa, Hyalgan, or Supartz injections?  Did they help?  I've Googled it and have read yays and nays.  My doctor suggested I try a series of Euflexxa.  I've had many cortisone shots, but my doctor said cortisone actually makes the cartilage weaker (and I have thinning cartilage), so he doesn't want to do anymore of those, which I hate because they are like a miracle cure! (at least for a few weeks to a couple of months).  Thank ...

Knee ProblemsDec 11, 2012
First let me start by saying that I have had two arthroscopies on my right knee and one on my left for basically worn out cartilage and some "fraying" around the edges of the knee cartilage, but never an outright tear (according to MRI studies all three times).  My knee problems have always started out first with pain, achy-type feeling, stiffness, and a tight band-like feeling around my knee, sometimes hurting on the outer back of my knee (I know I have a Baker's cyst in both knees, b ...

Knee ArthroscopyFeb 12, 2013
I had a knee arthroscopy February 1. I've had arthroscopic surgery before, but these incisions look different this time. There are two incisions about mid-knee, right and left sides of knee, that look like typical sutures tied with a knot, but below these two are smaller incisions with what appears to be a strand of suture running lengthwise across the incisions. Has anyone ever seen or heard about an arthroscopic surgery with sutures like this? I'm a big chicken with a very low pain ...

Please Pray For My KneeNov 30, 2016
Two years ago, I tore my medial meniscus and was thankfully able to heal in a few months by using crutches and participating in physical therapy.  On Thanksgiving, I hurt my knee again.  There was no precipitating factor other than just walking inside the house.  What is concerning is that I am now having pain even when not putting any pressure on my leg.  Please pray that this heals.  My insurance does not pay for specialists (like an orthopedist) or any imaging studies ...

Total Knee ReplacementJan 10, 2013

Knee Swollen, Tight, PainfulOct 18, 2009
Have been having trouble with my knee since about spring of this year.  I had a knee scope ten years ago for some torn cartilage, and the knee did great for the ten years following, but flared up this past spring.  It gets a very tight and full feeling with a big bulge in the back of the knee, and I keep telling the doctor I believe it is a Baker's cyst, but he doesn't suggest anything for it.  He did tell me that is where the fluid goes because it has no place else to g ...

Old MT/QA With PainMay 13, 2010
I have been an MT/QA for 24 years.  I have fibromyalgia, arthritis, have had bilateral carpal tunnel release, and I have cervical impingement.  I tried a new product called Evolv enhanced water beverage which has a formula called Archaea Active.  It claims to "promote a healthy inflammatory response."  Honestly, I was skeptical about it, but I am here to testify that this is truly a Godsend!!  It was explained to me that it increases oxygen at the cellular level and ...

Leg PainDec 05, 2013
