Need to find out something about pain....

Has anyone out there had experience with going to a pain management doc? What was your experience, good or bad?

Thanking you in advance.

I do dictations for two - different pain mgt docs

and the two are entirely different from each other. One is all about treatment of the pain reaction with just about anything other than drugs, particularly narcotics. They offer therapy from physical to psychological to try to break the pain and/or addiction to drugs cycle. They seem very caring.

The other doc, however, is all about the pain medication, offering many different medications, including narcotic, to break the pain cycle. More of an anesthesiologist approach, I guess.

I guess it would all depend on what you are looking for as far as pain mgt as to what doctor you see and what treatment you receive. I have never had any personal experience with pain mgt, other than to try to manage my own, without drugs of any kind. Exercise helps more than anything, but proper exercise. not just the typical aerobics or cardio. Exercise targeted to the area of pain. I don't like medications. They are just a band-aid to an underlying problem.

Thank you very much~ I appreciate it! no message - bshel

Yep, tried pain management - once - PR

I suffered for years with what I had been diagnosed with through a rheumatologist, fibromyalgia. I tried everything you could imagine trying to get relief from over the counter to some idea I would read, did not want the harder drugs as I want to have my wits about me and be able to concentrate and work. I finally self referred to a pain specialist. Went in, he asked me why I was there and when I said was diagnosed with fibromyalgia saw him cast his eyes up towards the ceiling as if to say not believing. I called him on it, told him I did not make the diagnosis, if his mother or perhaps wife or sister diagnosed with it maybe they would not get the eyes in the sky like me and never went back. Some years later hubby asked if I had ever been tested for low vitamin D, no was the answer and asked when returning to PCP, extremely low and then I started on much vitamin D each day, that seemed to have helped the pain so much.

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I chose not to go to pain management or take drugs. My rheumatologist suggested Yoga and it was the best thing that ever happened to me.

Always, always, always check with the rheumatologist (or whatever specialist you are seeing) before embarking on a Yoga program for any condition. And be very careful if you are given the go ahead. Slow and easy at first, allow your body to get used to the stretching. It's not something you force yourself into a pretzel for. If anything is forced, you can hurt yourself. You may also never be able to twist into a pretzel, and that's okay. I can't. I just very gradually took myself to where I was comfortable, little by little, and reached my own comfy max.

I started feeling relief right away. I didn't take a course or go to a class--I used a book, but was extremely careful about not feeling I had to take the poses to the extreme they had.

Again, check with your doc first.

I personally think the rheumatologist (you stated asked rheumatologist or specialist) had it all wrong myself because when I started on the Vitamin D3 it was almost immediate relief and before then everything hurt, my skin, tissue, bones, everything. I question a lot the specialists say.

Went to one that literally saved my life, after my first dick fusion at C6-7..He was fantastic, got the pain under control in a couple of months, suicide was high on my list of things to try at one point..But I had little kids so not really an option, just a happy thought. I did good for a while, had to go back after a few years,,I didnt have good experiences with any of them after the first guy (he moved back to NY)..The docs themselves are actually pretty good, the staff that supports them are the problem..Maybe because a lot of chronic pain patients are a bunch of babies and call all the time or something, not sure..But when I call in, its when it is bad. I suffer along till I cant take it anymore and then call. Every time I have done that I have been put off, with no call for a day or 2, well thats too long..Im already at the GP for pain pills at that point..

That being said it depends what you want out of them..There are pain docs that will LOAD you up with narcotics, and there are pain docs that wont give you any. Face it, the average pain patient wants that. I was addicted to Percocet and Valium for 10 years because my neurosurgeon wouldnt operate on me with a ruptured disk at C4-5. I had MRIs done and he said they were normal, then the pain doc just on the off hand ond day said the disk was ruptured..I had daily killer migraines..Went to another surgeon and was in surgery as soon as I could get my son home from college to babysit me..He said you have 2 months of pills and your done. Talk about scared. New surgeon gave me a number for rehab and said use it, I said no Ill do it myself. Weaned down towards the end and after a month of hell, been off the stuff for 2 years now. Be very careful where you go and who you see. I have friends that go out of state cause they are hooked on drugs and the docs here wont give them any..

Hey, m'lovely MT sisters, I suspect I have bursitis in my right shoulder.  It started as pain in my right arm biceps area and I had an odd rash in the area, so to be honest I was afraid it might have been shingles (never had them, but heard they're very painful). Ladies, it's been about 6 weeks and it's still freakling painful, but I believe I was wrong on precisely where the pain was originating.  I believe it's emanating at my right shoulder joint.  I&# ...

Old MT/QA With PainMay 13, 2010
I have been an MT/QA for 24 years.  I have fibromyalgia, arthritis, have had bilateral carpal tunnel release, and I have cervical impingement.  I tried a new product called Evolv enhanced water beverage which has a formula called Archaea Active.  It claims to "promote a healthy inflammatory response."  Honestly, I was skeptical about it, but I am here to testify that this is truly a Godsend!!  It was explained to me that it increases oxygen at the cellular level and ...

Leg PainDec 05, 2013
For the last couple weeks, whenever I go to bed, if I am on my back or side, I awaken several times with pain in my right calf and knee, if I turn on my stomach it goes away.  The first couple hours I am up in the morning it is painful, cannot put my right leg over my left, cannot cross my leg to put on my shoes because it immediately causes a sharp pain to shoot through my leg.  Cannot bend over because of the same.  After moving around about two hours it is okay pretty much the ...

Pain At The PumpMar 01, 2012
Do you ever wonder why the gas prices are up and down?  There is still about the same amount of gas out there (although it is a finite resouce that is going away) and we are still using about the same, more or less, with our more efficient vehicles. The price fluctuates because the Wall Street traders can make it fluctuate.  They do this so they can make money.  In 2008, (Bush Administration, by the way) the prices were over $4.00 a gallon.  The Obama administratio ...

Pain In ShinsJun 02, 2011
Hi.  I actually have a health question related to transcribing!  I've transcribed for over 25 years and have had no problems other than tight neck and shoulders; no hand, wrist or arm pain.  Recently my company changed from cassettes to digital, so I'm using a sllightly different type of food pedal.  I can't believe this would make a difference, but I don't know what else could cause this problem ... shin pain.  Firs ...

Inner Ankle PainJun 13, 2013
Hi all, For the last 2 years or so I have been suffering from right inner ankle pain.  It has progressively gotten more and more painful.  I have had x-rays and it shows nothing is wrong.  I am pretty sure it's has to be posterior tibialis tendinitis, but now it's starting on the left ankle.  When I rotate my right ankle in a circle, I can feel a popping sensation that doesn't really feel like it's bone, but it is so terribly sore.  I wondered if may ...

Knee PainJun 20, 2013

Pain In The Buttocks...LITERALLY!Oct 05, 2011
Well, I'll be darned if I don't have a LITERAL pain in nether region these days and was hoping someone who has experienced what is apparently coccygitis might have some pointers for me. I spend about 12-14 hours a day working at my computer.  I have an ergo chair and I'm reasonably sure my entire workspace is ergo-friendly; however, every time I have to move in my chair or get up to use the restroom or something, the area all around my tailbone is swollen and sore, and it li ...
