Mormon Religion/Gifts

Posted: Oct 9, 2011

I am Catholic but going to my grand nieces  who are Mormons blessing and baptism.  The four month old is getting blessed and my other grand niece is getting baptized who is seven.  My question is what would be the appropriate gifts to buy them or do you not give gifts for this.

Being Mormon myself, I promise your "presence" is present enough :) NM - Livewire

Thanks for the answer. I feel funny going empty handed but I did not want to do the wrong thing.

While a gift is certainly not required or in most cases even expected, they are sometimes given. If you would feel more comfortable bringing one then do. Perhaps a nice frame for each of them to put a picture commemorating the event would be nice.

I am Catholic, but I have many Mormon friends. When I am invited to blessings of babies, I usually give a nice baby blanket or wrap. Mormons are baptized at age eight, so I try to get them something nice--sometimes a sweater for a girl or a white shirt for a young man. One thing I have noticed about the Mormons is that they dress up very beautifully for church--even the children. Not necessarily in a fancy way, but in a way that shows respect for the Lord. There is a Mormon church right down the street from our house and I notice how nice the families look. Just as an aside, the Mormons have been very kind to me, and, while our theology is different, I really respect them for their values and kindness.

No Gifts PleaseOct 18, 2009
My husband and I are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary in January, and we plan on having a small dinner party for about 20 people at the alumni club at the university where we met (and our youngest son is currently a student.)  We don't want anyone to give us gifts because:  1.  We're throwing the party ourselves, so it would be tacky to expect gifts anyway; and, 2. we really do feel blessed just as we are, don't need anything more and don't want our gue ...

Christmas GiftsDec 02, 2011
Need advice. We have friends with a 10 YO and an 8 YO.  This may sound silly - but I feel that our friendship has evolved to that of us going to visit them, us sending gifts for holidays, us emailing and calling them.  We always get lovely thank you notes, but they live two hours away and they haven't been to our house in about five years and we haven't been to theirs in 2 years (husband refuses to go over there until they come here)!  .  Am I beating an old re ...

Wow, Today Is The Day For GiftsDec 16, 2010
So first I got a fruit basket delivered today from one of my accounts.  Very nice.  Then I got my mail and there was a X-mas card from our next door neighbor. They are retired, in their 80s, and live in Florida for the winter.  Since we live in an area that has plenty of snow, we (usually me) shovel or snowblow their sidewalk whenever needed.  In the past they have always sent a X-mas card with a check for my husband for doing the snowblowing, I think usually about $50.  ...

End Of Year GiftsMay 25, 2010
I'm out of ideas for end of year gifts for teachers. My son will be "graduating" 5th grade Thursday and he's had kind of a rough year. I'd like to get his teacher something out of the ordinary. I usually do gift cards, but anyone out there have any better, more unique ideas? I don't want to spend lots of money, maybe $20 or so...Thanks y'all! ...

First Communion Gifts?May 08, 2012
I have 2 nieces who will be having their First Communion this coming weekend. A little background: Their father (my husband's brother) is an atheist. Their mother is Catholic but rarely attends church. My feeling is that she's going through this First Communion rigamarole to please her very devout Catholic family. I was raised Catholic but separated from the Church many years ago, and I guess you could say I'm agnostic. My question involves First Communion gifts. It doesn't f ...

Baking Christmas Gifts...Oct 19, 2009
At my husband's family get together last weekend, I realized that my husband's family is just too huge to keep buying individual Christmas presents (15 adults and 5 kids, not counting his dad and my parents) plus our 3 kids so I've decided to get nice containers like a hatbox and fill it with baked goods, spiced pecans and jar mixes for each family. So my questions are: What jar mixes do you like to give/receive? What baked goods do you like to give/receive? TIA ...

Teacher's Gifts For End Of The YearJun 10, 2012
Anyone have any good ideas for teachers gifts? I was thinking of gift cards, but am always so unsure of how much to put on them. My 1 son has 1 teacher and 3 assistants in his rooom throughout the week (1 full time and 2 part time helpers), so I would need to buy for all 4 of them. My little guy has 1 teacher and 1 assistant in preschool, so I would need for them too. Also my big guy has a bus driver and an assistant so I want to get them a little something as well. Any help or s ...

Anyone Hear Of Grace Adele And/or 31 Gifts?Sep 02, 2013
I've been invited to two friends' parties. One is Grace Adele/Scentsy and the other is 31. Has anyone heard of these or gone to one of these parties or own any of these products? I've checked out their websites and think it's pretty pricey for their stuff. Is it worth it? To me if I'm going to spend that kind of money, I'd rather save up and buy Coach. I hate to turn down invites but if I go then I feel obligated to buy and then I either overspend or feel guil ...

Looks Like Ex Isn't Sending Kids Christmas GiftsDec 15, 2015
First Christmas since the divorce and I have the kids for the holidays. Ex isn't responding to my questions of what he's getting the kids for Christmas out of their list they created of requested items and blows me off when I ask him directly.  He has a good job and money - so it's not as if he's lacking.     Funny thing is that while married he'd want to spend like crazy on Christmas gifts for them and now we're divorced he has become Mr. Jerk in t ...

Role Of Women According To Mormon Doctrine: Bear And RaiseOct 19, 2012
Romney's "If you must have women working" attitude is a direct reflection of this instruction to women from "The Role of Righteous Women," "Some women, because of circumstances beyond their control, must work. We understand that. We understand further that as families are raised, the talents God has given you and blessed you with can often be put to effective use in additional service to mankind. Do not, however, make the mistake of being drawn off into secondary tasks which will cause the ...

Mormon Church Wanted ‘plausible Deniability’ On Anti-gay EffortJan 21, 2010
By Daniel TencerWednesday, January 20th, 2010 -- 8:18 pm The Mormon church worked to hide its involvement in the 2008 effort to ban gay marriage in California, telling the Proposition 8 campaign that it wanted "plausible deniability" in its connections with the movement, documents revealed in a California courtroom Wednesday show. In the seventh day of testimony in the landmark gay-marriage trial in San Francisco, lawyers for the gay-rights side presented emails showing "close links between th ...

Googling "lying For The Lord" Plus Mormon, LDS, Or RomneyOct 23, 2012
according to one article in a major periodical, Romney got permission from the church leadership when he was running for governor of Massachusetts to change his position (lie) on abortion from anti-legalization to pro-legalization. Apparently lying for the lord doesn't have to be for improving the LDS's image to outsiders, as it as mainly described. It can also be for other purposes. Like gaining political power for the church.   ...

Which Religion Is The Mar 31, 2010
I'm so confused. Each religion says theirs is the right one to follow, and each has their own book. One says there are false religions, but which ones are they? Another Reason To Keep Religion Out Of Gov'tFeb 12, 2010
The Virginia House of Delegates, their version of the House of Representatives, passed a bill on Wednesday that bans companies from tracking their employees with implanted microchips. On the surface, the bill sounds libertarian, albeit in a far-sighted Blade Runner sort of way. But it turns out that the bill’s sponsor was motivated by a more Old Testament perspective: stopping the rise of the Antichrist. "My understanding—I'm not a theologian—but there's a prophecy i ...

Freedom Of Religion.May 08, 2010
This country was founded on the needs of free women and men to practice the religion of choice. I find it disturbing that it is assumed on this thread, and generally in the USA that everyone follows Christian practice. And for all you Bible quoters, do you ever quote the Gospel of Mary and other Gospels suppressed by the "church" ? Or just the words of your overbearing patriarchs? P.S. God is neither male nor female.       ...

Religion And HomosexualityJun 21, 2013
How do all you religious people feel when someone who is gay, attempts suicide because they've been told since they were little that it is a sin and they will burn in hell? Gay is not a choice. I suppose acting on it is, but BEING it is not a choice, any more than you or I who are straight. I just think it's very sad that our youth can't go to the their family with this, because they've been brainwashed into thinking they'll burn in hell. So they attempt suicide ou ...

Religion And MainstreamApr 28, 2015
There is almost daily bashing on the politics board about religion and how it should not be a part of government and those who "practice" religion should stay out of everybody else's business.  This morning, watching a little news coverage on several different cable news networks, I hear the news people and the community organizers, city councilmen asking "where are the clergy? Why aren't they down here trying to calm things down....."   For some reason, when the world has g ...

Democrats Have A Religion Problem. A Conversation WithDec 31, 2016
White House staffer, about the party’s illiteracy on and hostility toward white evangelicals. There aren’t many people like Michael Wear in today’s Democratic Party. The former director of Barack Obama’s 2012 faith-outreach efforts is a theologically conservative evangelical Christian. He is opposed to both abortion and same-sex marriage, although he would argue that those are primarily theological positions, and other issues, including poverty and immigration, are also important to h ...

Thirty-four Million Americans Have Given Up On Organized ReligionJul 27, 2010
I thought this was a great article to share. Thirty-four million Americans have given up on organized religion, according to the most recent American Religious Identification Survey. Yet for many of these dropouts -- from churches, synagogues, temples and so on -- spirituality is still a vital part of their lives. How else would you explain the phenomenal success of Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now, Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat, Pray, Love (soon a major motion picture), or the wri ...

Romney's Religion Prejudice Against Women, Gays, African Americans (sm)Oct 31, 2012
Women and African Americans are not allowed to hold high positions within the Mormon church. How many of you are women? How can you support a candidate who does not believe in equal rights except when he is in front of the camera, and will give no details or explain supporting the church prejudices? His church believed it was OK to rape 12 year-old girls and force them into polygamous marriages. Their believes come from prophets to talk to God. Do you really think God condoned this?? Do ...
