Harry Reid is a Mormon?

Posted: Sep 25, 2012

Why is that ignored in most of the media? If Romney's faith is such a big deal, then why not Reid's, a Democrat, who is the highest-ranking Mormon in U.S. elected office? ;

Best kept "secret" - kr

Media must downplay this - Harry has enough problems of his own making already.

I never knew that, either. - (see message)

I'm guessing that a lot of people don't know that because he doesn't wear his religion on his sleeve.

At any rate, the candidate's religion (including Mitt Romney's) means nothing to me, as long as they don't try to make it the "religion of the land," or anything like that, which, in the U.S., I can't imagine something like that ever happening.

I have to say, though, that Mitt Romney's Mormonism might be a little bit of what's holding some Republicans back from being totally enthusiastic about him....even if it's subconsciously. I'm not saying that's right--just saying it's possible.

As for Harry Reid being a Mormon--since he's elected in his state of Utah, I'm sure a lot of his voters don't have a problem with it. There's a big difference between an election taking place among just Utah voters and one taking place among the entire United States where Mormonism isn't necessarily a large segment of the entire population.

Harry Reid is a senator from Nevada - not Utah,

and the media's double standard is quite evident.

Argh; sorry for my mistake.... - SM

I'm such a doofus....not sure why I had Utah in my brain. Sorry for that mistake.

At any rate, the Mormon population in Nevada is higher, too, than most states....and certainly a higher percentage than those in the general population of the U.S. I was just trying to say that this could explain why his Mormonism isn't as big a point for his state's voters as it is regarding Romney running for president of everyone.

Again, Romney's Mormonism makes no difference to me--that's not what will win or lose my vote for him. Years ago, we knew a Mormon family here in our very NON-Mormon state, and they were one of the nicest, family-oriented bunch I can remember. I don't have a thing against people practicing whatever religion they choose in this free country.

What about those who practice a religion that preaches killing "infidels," i.e., anyone who does not adhere to their faith? Because that's what's happening here on our home soil due to our all-inclusive policy. No, we should not ban them, but neither should we invite them in.
SM, those're far right-wing religionists. Most, oh, - for instance, Muslims do not believe in murdering
[ In Reply To ..]
nonbelievers, just as here, while most Christians do not, every party will have some far-right Christian who thinks we should "nuke" the Middle East, murdering an Osama-wet-dream's worth of people.

What we need is for decent people around the globe to all stomp on their own monsters and keep them firmly under control. We start right at home.
Hmmm, well that's where.... - SM

.....our country of laws comes in. There are laws against killing those one would consider an "infidel." Homeland Security must definitely be able to protect us from those who would do our country or an individual harm.

The topic of this thread, though, was about a politician's faith. That's what I meant when I said their religion didn't matter to me, even though I may have said it "inelegantly." Inelegant speech is forgivable, right? :-D

In the case of someone running for office, if they were indeed a member of a religion that preached "killing infidels," I have a strong feeling that that person would never get elected here, so that's kind of moot, to me. And, yes....please don't forget that, as a faith community, true Muslims do NOT endorse killing.

What I don't like is what he said about Romney - Zville MT

not being the "face of Mormanism" and has "sullied" his religion. If Romney had made a comment like that about Reid, his campaign would be over! I don't care what religion you are, you don't attack someone else's, especially by elevating yourself to be the national spokesperson of that religion. I hope that this turns out to be a misquote, but knowing Reid, I doubt it.

I just heard that it wasn't a misquote, but it's (sm) - Texan

still a developing story, I think. If MR were smart, he would barely give it a mention, tell Harry to _____, and go on from there discussing Barry's failures. I guess Harry is in charge of senseless distractions.
