Baking Christmas gifts...

Posted: Oct 19, 2009

At my husband's family get together last weekend, I realized that my husband's family is just too huge to keep buying individual Christmas presents (15 adults and 5 kids, not counting his dad and my parents) plus our 3 kids so I've decided to get nice containers like a hatbox and fill it with baked goods, spiced pecans and jar mixes for each family.

So my questions are:

What jar mixes do you like to give/receive?

What baked goods do you like to give/receive?

TIA

I do that for my hubbies family because his family is huge. I also do it for teachers. I have never made any jar recipes but I will do peanut butter bon bons which are basically peanut butter, powdered sugar, butter, and krispies covered in chocolate (search AllRecipes.com for good ones), choc. chip cookies, brownies, and we will cover pretzels with the white/vanilla almond bark. Yummy! Hope this helps!

I love to receive home-made gifts! - sm

I'm Italian, and cookies were such an important part of Christmas. Some of those cookies were pretty involved, however. These days, I make lots and lots of pizelle. You need a special pizelle maker to "bake" them. It looks like a waffle maker. But they are easy, quick and delicious, and inexpensive once you've bought the special appliance. I make piles of them and wrap then in cellophane, and sometimes include some flavored coffee to go along. I also sometimes take the pizelle fresh off the iron and lay them over a small bowl. They then form little cups as they cool. Those make great ice cream bowls, so I package them with ice cream toppings. Those are a big hit.

Getting ready to do this myself...sm - Bookworm

Looking forward to other ideas you get. Personally, fill a jar with mixed nuts, a plate of just about any cookie and I'm a happy camper. I give Snowman Soup (dressed up hot cocoa mix) to kids and chocolate lovers. The Flylady website had a recipe for powdered mocha mix which I hope to find. I have 2 "Gift in a Jar" books, one for muffins and breads and the other for soups. Plenty of ideas in there. The blueberry bread, so far, is my favorite with butter pecan bread very close behind. The soup jars are good for someone watching their diet or with diet restrictions.

On a related note: Does anyone know if dried fruit is a no-no for diabetics? A friend was recently diagnosed. I plan on trying a couple recipes with Splenda instead of sugar to see what they are like first and will also double-check the ADA sites, but thought I would ask.

I just got that Flylady mocha recipe this weekend. Its:
1 cup instant coffee (she prefers Tasters Choice)
2 cups Nesquick choc milk mix
3 cups Carnation instant milk

I'm looking forward to trying it!

Mmm. Thanks "Passing Thru." Will try it this week. nm - Bookworm

Need advice. We have friends with a 10 YO and an 8 YO.  This may sound silly - but I feel that our friendship has evolved to that of us going to visit them, us sending gifts for holidays, us emailing and calling them.  We always get lovely thank you notes, but they live two hours away and they haven't been to our house in about five years and we haven't been to theirs in 2 years (husband refuses to go over there until they come here)!  .  Am I beating an old re ...

Looks Like Ex Isn't Sending Kids Christmas GiftsDec 15, 2015
First Christmas since the divorce and I have the kids for the holidays. Ex isn't responding to my questions of what he's getting the kids for Christmas out of their list they created of requested items and blows me off when I ask him directly.  He has a good job and money - so it's not as if he's lacking.     Funny thing is that while married he'd want to spend like crazy on Christmas gifts for them and now we're divorced he has become Mr. Jerk in t ...

A Baking WebsiteMay 09, 2014
In my search for banana recipes I came across this website I thought was pretty neat.  All of her stuff looks scrumptious  Eager to try the lemon bars, malted whopper cupcakes, and dulce cheesecake bars, oatmeal applesauce cookies (might do those this weekend) and she has these chocolate chip cookie truffles that look scrumptious.  I think it's a cute website thought you might enjoy.    http://www.brandysbaking.com/2011/10/chocolate-chip-cookie-truffles.html ...

Help With Conversion Measurements For A Baking RecipeSep 17, 2015
I found a recipe for no bake chocolate oat bars, but I'm confused about the conversion rate they have.  (I'll post the recipe below).  They look good so wanted to give it a try. My question is this... Is .5 cups = 1/2 cup?  It says - .5 cup, packed (7.8 oz.) Brown Sugar.  When I looked up how many ounces in 1/2 cup the i-net has 1/2 cup = 4 oz.  When I looked up how many cups is 7.8 oz it says 7.8 oz = .975 c.  I've never heard of .975 cups.  S ...

No Gifts PleaseOct 18, 2009
My husband and I are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary in January, and we plan on having a small dinner party for about 20 people at the alumni club at the university where we met (and our youngest son is currently a student.)  We don't want anyone to give us gifts because:  1.  We're throwing the party ourselves, so it would be tacky to expect gifts anyway; and, 2. we really do feel blessed just as we are, don't need anything more and don't want our gue ...

Wow, Today Is The Day For GiftsDec 16, 2010
So first I got a fruit basket delivered today from one of my accounts.  Very nice.  Then I got my mail and there was a X-mas card from our next door neighbor. They are retired, in their 80s, and live in Florida for the winter.  Since we live in an area that has plenty of snow, we (usually me) shovel or snowblow their sidewalk whenever needed.  In the past they have always sent a X-mas card with a check for my husband for doing the snowblowing, I think usually about $50.  ...

First Communion Gifts?May 08, 2012
I have 2 nieces who will be having their First Communion this coming weekend. A little background: Their father (my husband's brother) is an atheist. Their mother is Catholic but rarely attends church. My feeling is that she's going through this First Communion rigamarole to please her very devout Catholic family. I was raised Catholic but separated from the Church many years ago, and I guess you could say I'm agnostic. My question involves First Communion gifts. It doesn't f ...

Anyone Hear Of Grace Adele And/or 31 Gifts?Sep 02, 2013
I've been invited to two friends' parties. One is Grace Adele/Scentsy and the other is 31. Has anyone heard of these or gone to one of these parties or own any of these products? I've checked out their websites and think it's pretty pricey for their stuff. Is it worth it? To me if I'm going to spend that kind of money, I'd rather save up and buy Coach. I hate to turn down invites but if I go then I feel obligated to buy and then I either overspend or feel guil ...

So.....What's On Your Christmas Table? SmDec 12, 2011
Or your Hanukkah table or however you choose to celebrate the season?  I'm not here to split hairs on what we call it.  I just thought it would be interesting to share some of our favorite foods of the season....maybe a recipe or two. Texas Pecan Cake (courtesy of my mom) makes a regular appearance on our table.  We don't like fruitcake in our house, but this is the Texas version, chock full of pecans and raisins.  Peanut Butter Balls, also known as Buckeyes, are ...

The Christmas FruitcakeDec 08, 2011
I say there are two kinds of people in this world, those who like fruitcake and those who don't; my son tells me I am wrong, there are three kinds of people in this world, those who are good at math and those who are not. I like fruitcake, I admit it, I'm not ashamed to say so -- so last night I bought a little itty-bitty $3.99 fruitcake to celebrate the 12 days of Christmas with a cup of herbal tea and a small slice after I finish work.  My son, on the other hand, says "Ug ...

Christmas ServiceDec 25, 2013
I just wanted to share this with everyone as I think it is so awesome. My church had a Christmas Eve service last night. We sang carols, the old ones. Now my church is small and our choir during the year has at best 20 members. A lot of people came in for the holidays to spend with their families and some of them joined our choir for the service which raised it up to about 30 members, more or less. Well the main hymn, anthem or whatever was the Halleuia (?) chorus from Handel's messiah ...
