Teacher's gifts for end of the year

Posted: Jun 10, 2012

Anyone have any good ideas for teachers gifts? I was thinking of gift cards, but am always so unsure of how much to put on them. My 1 son has 1 teacher and 3 assistants in his rooom throughout the week (1 full time and 2 part time helpers), so I would need to buy for all 4 of them. My little guy has 1 teacher and 1 assistant in preschool, so I would need for them too. Also my big guy has a bus driver and an assistant so I want to get them a little something as well.

Any help or suggestion on how much you would do a gift card for would be great!

Thanks!!

Most of the teachers I am acquainted with love to get gift cards (in any amount) to office/stationary/hobby stores, since they have to spend their own money to buy lots of the craft/bulletin board/prizes etc for their classrooms. I also have, for my kids and grandkids, asked the teachers at the beginning of the year what kind of supplies I could donate to the classrooms--they usually need envelopes/paper/pencils/stickers/craft supplies and I check the clearance merchandise while I'm shopping and when I find inexpensive items, send them to school. :)

Someone just gave me a Panera gift card that I love. NM - anon

I never understood why you have to buy the teachers a gift?? Nobody gives me a gift for doing my job. I have given little things when my son was little to THE teacher, not for everyone who darkens the doorway. I have never and will never "tip" a teacher with a gift card and I do not think it should be allowed.

It is not about giving them a gift for doing their job - CJ

Yes, they do their job and they get a paycheck for it. It is nice to show how much you appreciate what the teachers do and how giving they are. Many teachers spend their own money for things they use in the classroom. My son's teacher purchased special projects for the kids with gift cards that she recived from last years class. Did they need to do the extra projects....NO, but did it make learning and school a little more fun...YES! So I would like to pay it forward and give a gift card for next years class. We donate throughout the year for things that they need...tissues, bags and such. I also help out in the school so I see and know that the teachers spend their own money on things. I got the teachers gift cards and the assistants a Yankee Candle Jar. We have excellent teachers in this school and it shows as my kids love school and learning, so if I buy them a candle and give them a gift card to show my appreciation....so be it. I might also add that the teachers gave my kids Christmas gifts and they give them end of the year gifts. I just think it is a nice thing to do.

sm you would really just give a gift to the teacher if there was a teacher and an assistant in the class? I find that sad. The teachers assistants do just as much with the kids as the teachers do. I always said that I would be one not to give teachers gifts, but now that my kids are in school, by the end of the year the teachers are like family and I do not want to say good bye, so I give them a gift. Teachers do not get paid all that much for what they have to do. Think about it!

I have never given teachers end-of-year gifts yet and never will. I think it's a ridiculous custom & people only do it because of peer pressure. "All the other kids give something, so my kid has to too!" Then everyone tries to one-up the other on what gift they gave. My best friend is a teacher, and let me tell you she hates most of the cr@p she gets every May/June. She would much rather people pass the school levies when they come up than waste their money on stupid tokens that mostly end up in the trash.

that is why I do gift cards for teaching stores - Carrie

Not likely to end up in the garbage and the teacher will use it. I do not give in to peer pressure. If I think the teacher was great then I will give her a gift at the end of the year. My little guys kindergarten teacher last year was AMAZING! She just went above and beyond in everything that she did. My son came off the bus last year sobbing on the last day of school, he was so upset he had to leave his teacher. Honestly, if I did not think the teacher was a good teacher then I do not get them anything. We never have a problem with our budget passing in my town because most of the people that live here have kids and understand it is important.
Now that is a good idea.... - paychecks

If I really felt compelled to give a gift to a teacher for a personal reason, I would definitely agree to that. When my kids were in elementary school, I was always in the class helping and would donate supplies to the room without question because I knew the teacher was dipping into her own pocket, but as far as giving gift cards for dining out, etc., I just do not feel it is appropriate. It sets people up to play favorites and make others who cannot afford to gift in that way feel "less than." If I were a teacher, I would express to the parents that I did not accept gifts, but would accept things for the classroom and all the parent support I could get.

usually take up a collection at the end of the year, and your child's name is on the card whether you contribute or not. They take whatever is in the collection and purchase a Visa, AMEX or MC gift card. I try to contribute generously as I know the teachers put a lot of one-on-one time in with my son.

I love when the parents get together and do that :) - CJ

End Of Year GiftsMay 25, 2010
I'm out of ideas for end of year gifts for teachers. My son will be "graduating" 5th grade Thursday and he's had kind of a rough year. I'd like to get his teacher something out of the ordinary. I usually do gift cards, but anyone out there have any better, more unique ideas? I don't want to spend lots of money, maybe $20 or so...Thanks y'all! ...

2-year-old Kentucky Girl Accidentally Killed By Her 5-year-old Brother May 01, 2013
"A 2-year-old Kentucky girl was accidentally killed by her 5-year-old brother who fired a rifle he had been given as a gift, officials said Wednesday." Parents can be arrested for not reporting a missing child. It's not even legal to let your child drive a car without a permit. Yet, this sad, sad story is unfortunately way too common. We MUST start holding adults accountable for guns in the home. ...

No Gifts PleaseOct 18, 2009
My husband and I are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary in January, and we plan on having a small dinner party for about 20 people at the alumni club at the university where we met (and our youngest son is currently a student.)  We don't want anyone to give us gifts because:  1.  We're throwing the party ourselves, so it would be tacky to expect gifts anyway; and, 2. we really do feel blessed just as we are, don't need anything more and don't want our gue ...

Christmas GiftsDec 02, 2011
Need advice. We have friends with a 10 YO and an 8 YO.  This may sound silly - but I feel that our friendship has evolved to that of us going to visit them, us sending gifts for holidays, us emailing and calling them.  We always get lovely thank you notes, but they live two hours away and they haven't been to our house in about five years and we haven't been to theirs in 2 years (husband refuses to go over there until they come here)!  .  Am I beating an old re ...

Wow, Today Is The Day For GiftsDec 16, 2010
So first I got a fruit basket delivered today from one of my accounts.  Very nice.  Then I got my mail and there was a X-mas card from our next door neighbor. They are retired, in their 80s, and live in Florida for the winter.  Since we live in an area that has plenty of snow, we (usually me) shovel or snowblow their sidewalk whenever needed.  In the past they have always sent a X-mas card with a check for my husband for doing the snowblowing, I think usually about $50.  ...

First Communion Gifts?May 08, 2012
I have 2 nieces who will be having their First Communion this coming weekend. A little background: Their father (my husband's brother) is an atheist. Their mother is Catholic but rarely attends church. My feeling is that she's going through this First Communion rigamarole to please her very devout Catholic family. I was raised Catholic but separated from the Church many years ago, and I guess you could say I'm agnostic. My question involves First Communion gifts. It doesn't f ...

Baking Christmas Gifts...Oct 19, 2009
At my husband's family get together last weekend, I realized that my husband's family is just too huge to keep buying individual Christmas presents (15 adults and 5 kids, not counting his dad and my parents) plus our 3 kids so I've decided to get nice containers like a hatbox and fill it with baked goods, spiced pecans and jar mixes for each family. So my questions are: What jar mixes do you like to give/receive? What baked goods do you like to give/receive? TIA ...

Anyone Hear Of Grace Adele And/or 31 Gifts?Sep 02, 2013
I've been invited to two friends' parties. One is Grace Adele/Scentsy and the other is 31. Has anyone heard of these or gone to one of these parties or own any of these products? I've checked out their websites and think it's pretty pricey for their stuff. Is it worth it? To me if I'm going to spend that kind of money, I'd rather save up and buy Coach. I hate to turn down invites but if I go then I feel obligated to buy and then I either overspend or feel guil ...

Teacher TroublesDec 09, 2010
This has been a pretty upsetting year for my 10 year old boy (5th grade, and 6th grade advanced math -- two schools).  He is considered gifted and his teacher is a crazy person.  She says there is nothing that she can do to teach him this year, as he is already reading at post 12th grade level.  Her main curriculum is arts and crafts, weaving, knitting, finger-painting, cutting and pasting, and coloring.  I expressed this concern at conferences and she said if ...
