Christmas gifts

Posted: Dec 2, 2011

Need advice. We have friends with a 10 YO and an 8 YO.  This may sound silly - but I feel that our friendship has evolved to that of us going to visit them, us sending gifts for holidays, us emailing and calling them.  We always get lovely thank you notes, but they live two hours away and they haven't been to our house in about five years and we haven't been to theirs in 2 years (husband refuses to go over there until they come here)!  .  Am I beating an old relationship to death?  Since we are having a tight Christmas and less is more what should I do?  I don't want to hurt the kids' feelings.

Christmas Gifts - CanRelate

Don't let a longstanding friendship go by the wayside. It sounds like you really enjoy the relationship. My husband is similar in the way that yours will not go unless they come to you first, but there are ways that don't break the bank. Maybe send a family-type gift that does not cost too much. There are some fairly inexpensive things like pancake mix with syrup and a special-shaped pan that you can get around $20.00. I gave one of these a few years ago, and the son in the household tells me every time I see him that he started making the family Sunday breakfasts because of that gift. I think that friendships are too few and far between these days (especially when you work from home and not around other people) for us to give up on them so easily. If you feel comfortable, ask the other couple why they have not come to your house in so long. There may be a really good reason. Good luck!

My 2 cents - Been there

Do your friends send anything to your family? If yes, like the other poster said, get something for the whole family to enjoy. If no, I would stop sending anything to the friends. I had a good friend stop sending to me, and it turned out she simply did not know how to ask if we could stop exchanging, so she just stopped and hoped I would follow suit, which I did after a couple years. She was struggling financially but did not want anyone to know how bad it really was (I found out years later what was going on). Also around this time I felt like I was initiating all contact. She had 2 children and there was always a school or sport event to attend to. It was nothing personal, just had a very busy life. As you live so far from your friends, ask if they would be willing to meet you halfway where you could go to a park where the kids can run around or to a fair of some kind, and then go out to a restaurant. If they make excuses not to do that, or to come to your house, then, IHMO, I would back off a bit, keep in touch via e-mail or Facebook, and use the time and energy usually spent on them to forge new friendships or strengthen other current ones. Good luck. This kind of situation can be real tough to sort out and I feel for you.

another great family gift is games - mt3

you could probably get a good one for about $20.00 and not only would the family enjoy it if you do happen to get together with them it is something you could all do together during your visit. Some of our favorite games we have received as a family gift are Taboo and Apples to Apples...great because everyone from kids to adults can participate together.

We love to play Scattagories. - nm

Baking Christmas Gifts...Oct 19, 2009
At my husband's family get together last weekend, I realized that my husband's family is just too huge to keep buying individual Christmas presents (15 adults and 5 kids, not counting his dad and my parents) plus our 3 kids so I've decided to get nice containers like a hatbox and fill it with baked goods, spiced pecans and jar mixes for each family. So my questions are: What jar mixes do you like to give/receive? What baked goods do you like to give/receive? TIA ...

Looks Like Ex Isn't Sending Kids Christmas GiftsDec 15, 2015
First Christmas since the divorce and I have the kids for the holidays. Ex isn't responding to my questions of what he's getting the kids for Christmas out of their list they created of requested items and blows me off when I ask him directly.  He has a good job and money - so it's not as if he's lacking.     Funny thing is that while married he'd want to spend like crazy on Christmas gifts for them and now we're divorced he has become Mr. Jerk in t ...

No Gifts PleaseOct 18, 2009
My husband and I are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary in January, and we plan on having a small dinner party for about 20 people at the alumni club at the university where we met (and our youngest son is currently a student.)  We don't want anyone to give us gifts because:  1.  We're throwing the party ourselves, so it would be tacky to expect gifts anyway; and, 2. we really do feel blessed just as we are, don't need anything more and don't want our gue ...

Boy GiftsJun 13, 2011
My daughter was invited to a birthday party for two 12-year-old boys.  The moms said no gifts, but I would really like to send her with something.  I have all girls so really don't know what boys like.  Any suggestions on something cool for a little gift that a 12-year-old boy would like? ...

Wow, Today Is The Day For GiftsDec 16, 2010
So first I got a fruit basket delivered today from one of my accounts.  Very nice.  Then I got my mail and there was a X-mas card from our next door neighbor. They are retired, in their 80s, and live in Florida for the winter.  Since we live in an area that has plenty of snow, we (usually me) shovel or snowblow their sidewalk whenever needed.  In the past they have always sent a X-mas card with a check for my husband for doing the snowblowing, I think usually about $50.  ...

End Of Year GiftsMay 25, 2010
I'm out of ideas for end of year gifts for teachers. My son will be "graduating" 5th grade Thursday and he's had kind of a rough year. I'd like to get his teacher something out of the ordinary. I usually do gift cards, but anyone out there have any better, more unique ideas? I don't want to spend lots of money, maybe $20 or so...Thanks y'all! ...

First Communion Gifts?May 08, 2012
I have 2 nieces who will be having their First Communion this coming weekend. A little background: Their father (my husband's brother) is an atheist. Their mother is Catholic but rarely attends church. My feeling is that she's going through this First Communion rigamarole to please her very devout Catholic family. I was raised Catholic but separated from the Church many years ago, and I guess you could say I'm agnostic. My question involves First Communion gifts. It doesn't f ...

Teacher's Gifts For End Of The YearJun 10, 2012
Anyone have any good ideas for teachers gifts? I was thinking of gift cards, but am always so unsure of how much to put on them. My 1 son has 1 teacher and 3 assistants in his rooom throughout the week (1 full time and 2 part time helpers), so I would need to buy for all 4 of them. My little guy has 1 teacher and 1 assistant in preschool, so I would need for them too. Also my big guy has a bus driver and an assistant so I want to get them a little something as well. Any help or s ...

Anyone Hear Of Grace Adele And/or 31 Gifts?Sep 02, 2013
I've been invited to two friends' parties. One is Grace Adele/Scentsy and the other is 31. Has anyone heard of these or gone to one of these parties or own any of these products? I've checked out their websites and think it's pretty pricey for their stuff. Is it worth it? To me if I'm going to spend that kind of money, I'd rather save up and buy Coach. I hate to turn down invites but if I go then I feel obligated to buy and then I either overspend or feel guil ...

So.....What's On Your Christmas Table? SmDec 12, 2011
Or your Hanukkah table or however you choose to celebrate the season?  I'm not here to split hairs on what we call it.  I just thought it would be interesting to share some of our favorite foods of the season....maybe a recipe or two. Texas Pecan Cake (courtesy of my mom) makes a regular appearance on our table.  We don't like fruitcake in our house, but this is the Texas version, chock full of pecans and raisins.  Peanut Butter Balls, also known as Buckeyes, are ...

The Christmas FruitcakeDec 08, 2011
I say there are two kinds of people in this world, those who like fruitcake and those who don't; my son tells me I am wrong, there are three kinds of people in this world, those who are good at math and those who are not. I like fruitcake, I admit it, I'm not ashamed to say so -- so last night I bought a little itty-bitty $3.99 fruitcake to celebrate the 12 days of Christmas with a cup of herbal tea and a small slice after I finish work.  My son, on the other hand, says "Ug ...

In-laws And Christmas.Oct 24, 2011

Christmas ServiceDec 25, 2013
I just wanted to share this with everyone as I think it is so awesome. My church had a Christmas Eve service last night. We sang carols, the old ones. Now my church is small and our choir during the year has at best 20 members. A lot of people came in for the holidays to spend with their families and some of them joined our choir for the service which raised it up to about 30 members, more or less. Well the main hymn, anthem or whatever was the Halleuia (?) chorus from Handel's messiah ...

Christmas Gatherings, How Would You Feel?Dec 16, 2009
Every year since my 2000 wedding have spent Christmas Day with hubs family (have daughter by another marriage, grown and out of the home). My SIL (hubby's brother's wife) and I have exchanged the dinners since the other participants really too old (70s and 80s) to host everyone, quite an ordeal to arrange for say about 15 people. I hosted dinner in 2007 and asked last year by SIL to host again and she would do this year. Have heard nothing about dinner until yesterday (10 days prior to ...
