I'm so confused. Each religion says theirs is the right one to follow, and each has their own book. One says there are false religions, but which ones are they? How do you decipher what's the truth?  I don't believe all ways lead to the same god. Each one says THEIR god is the true god.

My mind is spinning with all this.

You do not have to pick one - study independently

Make a list of what you believe, or feel rings true. Do some research on different churches and religions. Maybe you'll find where you fit, or maybe you'll just take a piece from each one and call it your own. I think they each have a piece of the truth, but none has all of it. The Bible says "seek and ye shall find", and God will help you find the path you're meant to be on.

If you are open to the idea of going to church to learn more, I would highly suggest finding a contemporary non-denominational church that offers life-application, easy to understand and apply type of sermons. I attend a church like this, although it is technically a Methodist church. I find this church to be very accepting, much different from the traditional church I was raised in. In fact, our church motto is "meeting people where they are and moving from life to living." It is also very casual in dress and music which makes for a much more comfortable environment. You can walk in a few minutes late with coffee in hand and not be looked at as if you are going to straight to hell. lol Our pastor is young and funny, always making learning an enjoyable experience rather than a difficult, awkward and sometimes scary experience that certain traditional churches tend to project.

I know for me, this experience with the contemporary church has really strengthened the faith I already had in God. I believe there is one God, the Creator of everything, the Almighty. I also believe in Jesus the Son of God, who died on the cross to save us all from our sins. Believing in him and accepting him into our heart is our CHOICE. He does not force this upon us but gives us the free will to accept his love at any time should we desire it.

Now interpreting how and when and why all these things in the Bible came to be is the result of MAN'S written interpretation through God. You have to keep that in mind because there are many controversial topics and perceptions of what the "right" way is or isn't. That is why you need to read, study and determine for yourself how you want to interpret it.

Best wishes to you in whatever you decide to do.

Finding a church - what a headache

That's the other thing where I'm confused. I've tried 2 different churches in the last 2 years. I know pastors are human, too, but there are things that rub me very wrong.

The first church, the pastor made a new "rule" that you couldn't go into the children's church (which was in the basement) without official clearance (such as you would need to work in a school). I told him that was MY child (3 years old), and if I wanted to get up out of the pew to check on him, I would. He said that it was going to be made legal and that he was recommended by his insurance guy to do this. I said "good luck with that one." How do I know that they're not trying to brainwash my child or doing something even worse. Needless to say, I never went back.

At another church I went to more recently, the pastor was doing sermons on family values. Included in this was that the woman should not work and that there are things you will have to sacrifice in order to fulfill this "wonderful" lifestyle. I like working, and I work out of my home. My work doesn't interfere with my family obligations or my children's needs. Besides, we wouldn't make it if I didn't work. Another thing, my husband is great with vehicles, so we pay cash for older vehicles that we can keep running for years. We have no car payments and don't spend frivolously. If I "sacrifice" much more, we'll have nothing and will be living in a cardboard box with my kids! We need my income.

He also said if you're on birth control, it's pretty much the same as aborting. Well, I guess I'm screwed because I had a tubal after my second child. I guess I'm a permanent "aborter" then. My second child was born with a life-threatening condition, which was very traumatic. We almost lost him. The chances of me having another child with this condition are higher. Time to get the tubes tied!

I don't know. I just don't agree with a lot of these pastors.

I have watched David Jeremiah on his website on the computer, and I really do enjoy his teaching.

keep looking - seriously there are good

ones out there! Please don't get discouraged. Of course you are not going to agree with every little decision made at the church, but that's ok. The teachings you described above sound very much like fundamental types of churches, especially the birth control issue and the women not working issue.

As far as the children's area, obviously they have taken the legal advice a bit too far. Unfortunately, churches are a lure for child predators, and churches are now being made to step up their security for liability reasons. Unfortunately, some have taken it too far and actually put too many restrictions on the parents. It's a catch 22. Keep looking is all I can say! It's like MTSOs...there are still some good ones out there. You just have to keep looking until you find the best possible fit for you and your family.

Another Reason To Keep Religion Out Of Gov'tFeb 12, 2010
The Virginia House of Delegates, their version of the House of Representatives, passed a bill on Wednesday that bans companies from tracking their employees with implanted microchips. On the surface, the bill sounds libertarian, albeit in a far-sighted Blade Runner sort of way. But it turns out that the bill’s sponsor was motivated by a more Old Testament perspective: stopping the rise of the Antichrist. "My understanding—I'm not a theologian—but there's a prophecy i ...

Freedom Of Religion.May 08, 2010
This country was founded on the needs of free women and men to practice the religion of choice. I find it disturbing that it is assumed on this thread, and generally in the USA that everyone follows Christian practice. And for all you Bible quoters, do you ever quote the Gospel of Mary and other Gospels suppressed by the "church" ? Or just the words of your overbearing patriarchs? P.S. God is neither male nor female.       ...

Religion And HomosexualityJun 21, 2013
How do all you religious people feel when someone who is gay, attempts suicide because they've been told since they were little that it is a sin and they will burn in hell? Gay is not a choice. I suppose acting on it is, but BEING it is not a choice, any more than you or I who are straight. I just think it's very sad that our youth can't go to the their family with this, because they've been brainwashed into thinking they'll burn in hell. So they attempt suicide ou ...

Religion And MainstreamApr 28, 2015
There is almost daily bashing on the politics board about religion and how it should not be a part of government and those who "practice" religion should stay out of everybody else's business.  This morning, watching a little news coverage on several different cable news networks, I hear the news people and the community organizers, city councilmen asking "where are the clergy? Why aren't they down here trying to calm things down....."   For some reason, when the world has g ...

Democrats Have A Religion Problem. A Conversation WithDec 31, 2016
White House staffer, about the party’s illiteracy on and hostility toward white evangelicals. There aren’t many people like Michael Wear in today’s Democratic Party. The former director of Barack Obama’s 2012 faith-outreach efforts is a theologically conservative evangelical Christian. Thirty-four Million Americans Have Given Up On Organized ReligionJul 27, 2010
I thought this was a great article to share. Thirty-four million Americans have given up on organized religion, according to the most recent American Religious Identification Survey. Yet for many of these dropouts -- from churches, synagogues, temples and so on -- spirituality is still a vital part of their lives. How else would you explain the phenomenal success of Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now, Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat, Pray, Love (soon a major motion picture), or the wri ...

Women and African Americans are not allowed to hold high positions within the Mormon church. How many of you are women? How can you support a candidate who does not believe in equal rights except when he is in front of the camera, and will give no details or explain supporting the church prejudices? Playing The "religion Card."Aug 26, 2012
It is sad, but eventually the "religion card" will be played. I am not of the Mormon faith, but I personally know quite a few people who are. The Mormons (Latter Day Saints) I know are amazingly moral, charitable, kind, loving people. Their beliefs are no stranger than some of my own religious beliefs (evangilitical) probably seem to the unbeliever. They serve in the military for our freedoms, they teach in our schools, they are nurses and doctors in our hospitals. Why shouldn't they t ...
