Romney's "If you must have women working" attitude is a direct reflection of this instruction to women from "The Role of Righteous Women,"
"Some women, because of circumstances beyond their control, must work. We understand that. We understand further that as families are raised, the talents God has given you and blessed you with can often be put to effective use in additional service to mankind. Do not, however, make the mistake of being drawn off into secondary tasks which will cause the neglect of your eternal assignments such as giving birth to and rearing the spirit children of our Father in Heaven. Pray carefully over all your decisions."
It also explains how fewer and fewer women worked at Bain over the years and were not replaced: The Mormon employees (Mormons hire fellow Mormons as much as possible) of course left as soon as they could to fulfill their roles as women. Other women were either not hired in the first place or were not promoted and left as a result. Note that promoting woman would encourage them to go against the will of God instead of devoting themselves to tending children at home, and the children's fathers too of course.
Long ago I worked for a few months in a Mormon owned business. During that summer, the college-student and doofy high-school grad sons were given jobs in sales, dressed in suits, and groomed for executive positions.
The lovely, intelligent daughter, who'd just graduated with a bachelor's degree in business management, was made a file clerk, running files back and forth for the customer service representatives in cubicles (the "if you're going to have women working" women, i.e. me). She was not happy at all but was too dutiful to go get another job; she'd just run into a reality that she hadn't thought through before.
I left soon after for a better job, BTW, having only come to get on-the-job training for a higher position I wanted (and would never get here), and also knowing Kathleen would not even be allowed to train for my skilled job (clerical that required 4-year degree, had a fair number of men, and paid well enough to support a family). Her first and last outside job would be file clerk in the family business, then marriage as soon as the families could bring her together with a suitable mate for eternity.
