I think this would solve a lot of problems instantly

Posted: Sep 9, 2012

I've thought about this before, and it occurred to me again while reading exerpts from Woodward's newest book...along with "rebuttals" from Obama, Pelosi, Boehner, Reid, etc.  Most of these amount to "that never happened".

Also, I've thought about this in conjunction with things like the secret negotiations with pharmaceutical companies to gain their support for Obamacare.  I don't say this just happens on one side - it happens on both sides.

I've often wondered what goes on "behind closed doors" - but more importantly, I've thought about how much evil - not the least of which involves lying to the public later - comes from private meetings, phone calls, and all of the "stuff" that goes on BEHIND OUR BACKS, AND EXEMPT FROM PUBLIC SCRUTINY.

And I haven't mentioned email, Skype, and other "channels" that facilitate these shenanigans.

What if we passed a law that ANY AND ALL meetings, phone calls, emails, or other forms of communication MUST be recorded, and these recordings would be available - subject to the Freedom of Information Act?  There could still be provisions for matters of national security.  If it were my law, it would be a felony to conduct any negotiations, etc. that were not recorded.

Now - first, I know there would be some logistical issues.  We can't concern ourselves with those here because they can be solved.  I also know that politicians would say that they "must be able to conduct business secretly", and there ARE times when that is perfectly true.  Provisions would have to be made for such negotiations and I think there are several ways that could be accomplished perfectly well.

It's just that I think there has become a culture in Washington in which business that is NOT IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST is being conducted BECAUSE IT CANNOT BE SEEN.

Let the light shine on what Congress, the President and the executive agencies are doing.  Evil thrives in the darkness, and I'm sick of never being able to be sure of how business is being conducted in Washington because people are making all of these side deals and then they flat out lie about them.

If everyone in Congress and the executive branch KNEW that their actions could be revealed to the public - I think a lot of things would change.

Good idea. Kind of like Obama promised (sm) - LM

to have negotations for passage of healthcare.

There were negotiations and compromise when...sm - VTMT

when the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) was crafted. Why do you think there is no public option?

Funny - I seem to remember it as kickbacks and bribes. - Funny how that works. (sm)

I also remember behind closed doors. I also remember you have to pass it before you know what's in it. Unfortunately, we are still finding out the havoc it is wreaking.
My pre-existing condition is thankful for the changes - Also Thankful For Medicare/SS
[ In Reply To ..]
So far, so good for me with the healthcare changes. I was priced out of the private market for health insurance because of a pre-existing condition. I have had high blood pressure (well controlled), but that made it impossible for me to get insurance before. Now that has changed for the better. All I wanted was to protect myself from catastrophic illness, but the insurance companies didn't want me. The changes, so far, are for the good, for me.
They are for me too, actually. My work insurance (sm) - In the same boat as you.

DOUBLED for my husband and me. I know the director pretty well at our company, actually I've known her for years and years, and she told me they don't expect it to go down either, according to insurance companies. Therefore, I decided to work part time and get on Medicare and collect SS a year early. Had no pre-existing except HBP also but DH has had cancer. We got the best AARP supplement they had, and it has worked well for us. I still hate the idea of the government having control of our healthcare, however, and that will not change. I think they care not about our health, per se, but about control. (If the healthcare was so great, why are congress getting to keep their cadillac plans and so many of Obama's union thugs get waivers). I think about my adult children, however, and know they will need Medicare someday and it will not be there unless Romney and Ryan can fix it, and I do think they can. (Obama has no desire to fix it - he wants everybody on govt HC). R&R do want to keep the clause about pre-existing conditions, which is a good thing, not sure about the over 26 on parents'. I still don't think I like that much. If they could find decent jobs that offered HC, they could probably get their own, but I'm not sure about details on that, only that with Obama in power for another 4 years, jobs will not come back. He doesn't want them to. Now, I'm starting to ramble. Good luck to both of us.
The voucher systems gives the power back to those insurance companies that denied me coverage - That will cause people to go without
[ In Reply To ..]
As soon as a voucher system goes into effect, the private insurance companies will price those of us with preexisting conditions or of a certain age or ethnicity right out of the market. I'll be back where I was before Obamacare. I'll be without insurance coverage.
You don't know that. You don't know how it will be - implemented.
[ In Reply To ..]
nm
Not knowing how it will be implemented is a perfectly good reason - to vote it down
[ In Reply To ..]
from the get-go. The OP is also perfectly justified in speculating and assuming nothing will change under an unregulated private insurance subsidy program.
I guess you haven't noticed that Obamacare changes (sm) - Texan
[ In Reply To ..]
everyday. Stupid Nancy Pelosi said you have to pass it before you can know what's in it, and you actually fell for that crap? Hypocrisy at its finest. Ignorance abounds. You've been screwed. Unfortunately, so have the rest of us.
Don't be ridiculous. It's been signed into law and - upheld by SCOTUS.
[ In Reply To ..]
I do agree with one thing you said. Ignorance does abound. Take for example the post to which I am replying.
Sounds like name calling to me. You have no idea (sm) - Poster you were rude to

what the little ins and outs will be. Neither do most of the American people. They can pretty much do whatever they want now thanks to SCOTUS. Have all waivers already been given out? Or can you still get one?

Outside Cat, Trying To Solve Eye Issues AndOct 27, 2014
I wrote down below about outside cat that has eye issues. Some told me about L-Lysine, got that and started 1000 mg a day or so ago. What I would like to know, have some Vitamin C that I was giving him and he seemed to have brighter eyes. This morning his eyes again (after not giving him the Vitamin C, switching out for L-Lysine) were looking a little worse. Would it be any problem to give him both the Lysine and the Vitamin C? Thanks my fellow catfolks! ...

Reading The 23 EO's And Truthfully, What Does It Solve?Jan 16, 2013
Not much except spending money on studies and reports. Background checks for gun shows=good one but putting the ATF in charge of following gun purchases when they couldn't even follow their own during Fast and Furious? That's like the fox watching the hen house. Trashing HIPPA is what Obama will do if forced to make private health reports public for all government databases.  Background checks on ALL gun sales means a private person won't be able to sell a gun unless they g ...

Ear ProblemsApr 05, 2016
Does anyone else have the problem of certain outside noise frequencies causing their eardrums to vibrate or pulse really fast? This only happens when I wear my headphones. I have noise-canceling headphones and can't actually hear the sound, just feel the vibrations in my eardrums. It's only certain things for me like lawnmowers, chainsaws, four-wheelers, and some car/truck engines. Most of the time it isn't bad if whatever is making the noise is just there for a moment, but i ...

Mortgage ProblemsNov 12, 2009
Hi everyone - Anyone have any ideas about what to do with a bad mortgage, other than foreclosure I mean.  We got sold to a servicing company some time ago.  My DH decided to ask, just ask, about getting a loan modification and they automatically went ahead and did this without us filling out any paperwork.  Can you believe it!?  We tried calling and talking with them about this but got no where to say the least.  We decided to just keep paying our regular mortgage a ...

Period ProblemsMay 31, 2011
This may be too much info for some of you guys, so sorry in advance! My period is normally a very heavy flow with terrible cramps and lasts 6 to 8 days.  Lucky me, I know.  Last month it was normal (well, what I consider normal for me).  This month it was like 1 day of spotting and that was it.  I did have a bit of cramping, but this is not normal for me.  I haven't had sex in a couple months and my period last month was normal so I doubt I am pregnant. Any ideas? ...

Financial Problems - Like So ManyMar 13, 2010
Like so many right now, due to pay cuts in the last year, I am in need of any additional prayer anyone can give.  My pay has been cut nearly in half.  I don't qualify for bankruptcy because my name is on 1/4 of my mom's house.  She has early dementia and is fighting us on all fronts right now because she's in denial.  She just had another TIA and is refusing to go for an MRI or see the neurologist.  She refuses to sell the house, which she needs to do anyw ...

Husband ProblemsAug 11, 2012
I need some opinions about some of the things my husband does. Basically, I feel that he is very controlling.  He is always making remarks when he can't get me on the phone that I must be with my "boyfriend".  If my phone goes off, he'll say ask if it's my boyfriend, and it is usually just an email from work or some type of business that I have an account with.  We have been married for 16 years, and I have never cheated on him.  My best friend since high scho ...

Knee ProblemsDec 11, 2012
First let me start by saying that I have had two arthroscopies on my right knee and one on my left for basically worn out cartilage and some "fraying" around the edges of the knee cartilage, but never an outright tear (according to MRI studies all three times).  My knee problems have always started out first with pain, achy-type feeling, stiffness, and a tight band-like feeling around my knee, sometimes hurting on the outer back of my knee (I know I have a Baker's cyst in both knees, b ...

Problems With TV ReceptionApr 30, 2014
Tonight I dropped my Comcast remote, and it fell upside down on the carpet.  When I picked it up, it apparently hit a button that immediately made my TV reception extremely snowy.  Can't figure out how to fix it.  I did not go near the TV, so I am sure it has nothing to do with any cable connections.  Any advice would be helpful before I undertake the task of calling Comcast, which is not always a good experience.  Thanks! ...

Health Problems Being An MTSep 11, 2014
I'm a relatively new MT and already I'm having a constant ache in my arm and shoulder. It's a strange sensation that I can't really describe. Never had problems physically before until I began being an MT. However, it didn't come on until about a year and a half of being an MT. For those who have been an MT for, say, 20 years, I don't know how you do it. You don't get health problems from working at McDonald's or Wal-Mart, I don't think. Typing 8 ...

NECK PROBLEMSApr 17, 2016

Problems With Controlling Mother...Sep 25, 2011
I'm hoping this doesn't get too long winded, but it probably will, lol.  I have an exceptionally controlling mother (I'm 44).  She makes snide remarks about my parenting, my clothes, my job, you name it.  I got fed up about a month ago and blocked her from calling into my home (comcast can do that).  Her world's record of calling me at home was 12 times in one day.  Now she can only call my cell phone.  Stupid me I thought this would work out bet ...

Having Problems With Brother's FriendJul 05, 2011
My family knew that I was looking for a new pet.  I wanted a cat or a kitten and had been looking in shelters and in ads for a pet, hoping to give an unwanted animal a good home.  I finally found a 3 year old super fat and fuzzy faded orange tabby cat and brought it home. Named him Puss in Boots because he reminds me of the character in Shrek 3, that fat!  Well my brother called me up and explained to me that a friend of his was looking for a home for ...

Spouse With Possible Cognitive Problems?Feb 15, 2013
Hubby and I went out for Valentine's dinner last night.  We've been married 26 years.  He's 59.  Now, we've lived in this community for almost 20 years.  He knows these streets up and down and sideways, but on our way to the restaurant he turned the car into an oncoming ramp with a car coming right at us.  I tried not to freak, but was not completely calm when I said, "We can't go that way!"  He stopped short of committing to the ramp and ma ...

Did President Obama Know About The VA Problems?May 19, 2014
It's being reported that the president knew about the problems at the VA since 2008, and so he should since he is Commander in Chief. Of all the scandals, the one involving Veterans is right up there with Benghazi. The very people who have volunteered to protect America, including the President, and this is the than ...
