NECK PROBLEMS

Posted: Apr 17, 2016

I have been doing MLS work for donkey's years.   I have always had a little "twitch" in my neck but recently it has gotten out of hand.   I cannot go to get my hair done or even to the dentist because when I sit down in the chair my head starts to twitch.  I cannot even take a drink without my head twitching resulting in me spilling the drink.   It is not constant but occurs often enough these days to alarm me.   I am thinking it may be from constantly staring at a computer for the last 25 + years.  Anyone else have this problem?

Did you go to the doctor?

I have plenty of neck and back pain that is directly related to being chained to this chair for so many hours a week over the course of so many years (decades).

I actually had to go to physical therapy because the pain was just intolerable and the exercises really do work to alleviate the neck/back pain. I do them every. single. day. A few times a day actually.

I also used my tax return $ last month to get a stand-up desk and absolutely love it. Wished I would have been able to get one a long time ago as my chiropractor has been recommending that I get one for years at this point but I've not been able to pull it off until recently. They are pricey, but I imagine you could put together something yourself that resembled a stand-up desk (Google would have ideas, or Pinterest).

I'm not sure if any of these strategies would be helpful for your particular situation, but I would not be at all surprised if it was related to staring at the computer for so many years. I had no idea how hard this line of work would actually be on my body but the effects are cumulative, that is for sure. Good luck in finding a solution that works for you.

Not to hack the original post, but would you mind sharing which brand of stand-up desk you bought? It is something I'm looking to invest in soon.

Stretching exercises have been key for me as well in counteracting the effects that the years sitting have had on me.

It's called a Varidesk. It came highly recommended by 2 fellow MT friends and a third person in a different line of work but still on the computer all day. I usually alternate sitting/standing every 2 hours and it takes maybe 30 seconds tops to switch it from the sitting to standing position or vice versa. It really has made a big difference for me already with the various aches and pains associated with sitting all day.
Use a foot pedal? - Sorry OP. sm

I have not been able to find a comfortable solution for foot pedal use.

To OP, sorry about your neck issues. I do hope you find a quick solution.

I don't have that, but what I do have is my hands going numb off and on throughout the day. I stop, shake them out, and go on.

Sounds like carpal tunnel. That is the way mine were before I had them both operated on.

That's exactly what it is. Sometimes they even wake me up at night. I've had two EMGs. The first one showed mild and the second one showed moderate. Those EMGs really HURT!!!!

I've had neck problems before, and currently - treating one now, that stem from -sm-

mousing. Most affected is the triangular scalene/sternocleidomastoid area of my left neck, but it also affects the shoulder as well.

I had a very painful episode of computer neck injury on the job many years ago, and the likely culprit was working on a keyboard that was too high. Lowering it to lap-level helped, but I ended up with 6 weeks of physical and ultrasound therapy, as well as disability.

Since then I've sometimes had it act up if I mouse too much with one hand. The best way to deal with that is to switch the mouse from side to side frequently. Recently too much mousing with the left hand (using right to drink coffee) while surfing the 'net caused it to flare up again. My home treatment has consisted of complete rest for the left arm, using the right only for mousing (AND coffee-drinking!) I stop and do gentle range-of-motion on my neck frequently, and also find "Tiger Balm Neck Rub" to be very effective. (The best was "Flexall 454", but I haven't been able to find it for the last few years... maybe it's off the market?) If it bothers me when I'm trying to sleep, then I take something like Advil, Aleve, or acetaminophen. The "PM" versions of those are also helpful if falling asleep because of the pain is a problem, as they usually contain an antihistamine like diphenhydramine.

My neck was pretty painful on Saturday, so I did the above things for the last 2 days, and this morning it feels almost normal again. However, I plan to give the left side at least a week, and likely more, of "mouse rest", and after that try to be more diligent about switching mousing sides more frequently. I hope you find something to relieve your neck issues!

I found this video (a fast 5 minutes/not a lot of talking) helped almost immediately ... if it doesn't help or if it hurts too much ... it may help you pin point what's up ...

Neck And Arm Sep 20, 2012
Hello, I am 52 years old, been an MT since 1999.  Just recently I have been having tingling and numbness in my neck with radiation down my left arm.  There is no chest pain.  Have any of you had similar symptoms?  I'm not one to take a lot of NSAIDS, but would if it helped.  Would yoga help this?  Do you stretch at your desk during the day?  I'm going to get a check-up with my PCP to rule out MS, but wanted to check with my peers to see if this is som ...

Stiff Neck - SmJan 27, 2010
Have had a stiff neck for 3 days. Started on the right side, now on both sides. Hurts to turn in either direction. Tried heat, rubs, ibuprofen, but as soon as the ibuprofen starts to wear off it returns. Last night I sat up in a recliner and without moving my neck, my right neck up to my ear and down to my collar bone hurt. This morning it is just on both sides. I am going to take a few more ibuprofens, lay down, and then will check back here later. No fevers, no chills, no trauma, do not ...

I Am So Frustrated With My Neck Pain! Any Suggestions?Oct 30, 2010
I have been dealing with my neck issues for 20 years.  I've been in to MVAs where I was rear-ended by someone traveling pretty fast and I had whiplash injuries both time.  Add the whiplash to what I do for a living and you have a recipe for a chronically painful, stiff neck.  I've now graduated into shooting pains up my neck to behind my left ear and of course those fun tension headaches from the back of my head up to the crown. I went to my doctor last week and got the ...

Neck And Cervical Strain IssuesMar 08, 2013
Would love any suggestions of how many of you have this problem.  I have tried neck exercises, shots and heating pad and ice to my right shoulder, try to watch my posture too.  My daughter also has this, but she does not sit at the computer like I do.  This is annoying and cannot get relief until I go to bed at night and it eases it somewhat, but then when working again I am plagued with it again.   I fear it is coming from a pinched nerve in my cervical neck but have no insu ...

Constant Tension Headache And Neck PainDec 30, 2013
Hello! I have had a terrible tension headache and neck pain/stiffness for the last few days, and I'm wondering how some of you had handled this situation. I am torn between doing gentle ROM exercises/stretching or just resting it as much as possible. I've tried massaging my neck/bottom of head/temple areas with no relief. I've also tried taking 800 mg of Advil with no help. Nothing I've tried is helping, so if anyone has any advice, I am in dire need! ...

Ear ProblemsApr 05, 2016
Does anyone else have the problem of certain outside noise frequencies causing their eardrums to vibrate or pulse really fast? This only happens when I wear my headphones. I have noise-canceling headphones and can't actually hear the sound, just feel the vibrations in my eardrums. It's only certain things for me like lawnmowers, chainsaws, four-wheelers, and some car/truck engines. Most of the time it isn't bad if whatever is making the noise is just there for a moment, but i ...

Mortgage ProblemsNov 12, 2009
Hi everyone - Anyone have any ideas about what to do with a bad mortgage, other than foreclosure I mean.  We got sold to a servicing company some time ago.  My DH decided to ask, just ask, about getting a loan modification and they automatically went ahead and did this without us filling out any paperwork.  Can you believe it!?  We tried calling and talking with them about this but got no where to say the least.  We decided to just keep paying our regular mortgage a ...

Period ProblemsMay 31, 2011
This may be too much info for some of you guys, so sorry in advance! My period is normally a very heavy flow with terrible cramps and lasts 6 to 8 days.  Lucky me, I know.  Last month it was normal (well, what I consider normal for me).  This month it was like 1 day of spotting and that was it.  I did have a bit of cramping, but this is not normal for me.  I haven't had sex in a couple months and my period last month was normal so I doubt I am pregnant. Any ideas? ...

Husband ProblemsAug 11, 2012
I need some opinions about some of the things my husband does. Basically, I feel that he is very controlling.  He is always making remarks when he can't get me on the phone that I must be with my "boyfriend".  If my phone goes off, he'll say ask if it's my boyfriend, and it is usually just an email from work or some type of business that I have an account with.  We have been married for 16 years, and I have never cheated on him.  My best friend since high scho ...

Knee ProblemsDec 11, 2012
First let me start by saying that I have had two arthroscopies on my right knee and one on my left for basically worn out cartilage and some "fraying" around the edges of the knee cartilage, but never an outright tear (according to MRI studies all three times).  My knee problems have always started out first with pain, achy-type feeling, stiffness, and a tight band-like feeling around my knee, sometimes hurting on the outer back of my knee (I know I have a Baker's cyst in both knees, b ...

Problems With TV ReceptionApr 30, 2014
Tonight I dropped my Comcast remote, and it fell upside down on the carpet.  When I picked it up, it apparently hit a button that immediately made my TV reception extremely snowy.  Can't figure out how to fix it.  I did not go near the TV, so I am sure it has nothing to do with any cable connections.  Any advice would be helpful before I undertake the task of calling Comcast, which is not always a good experience.  Thanks! ...

Health Problems Being An MTSep 11, 2014
I'm a relatively new MT and already I'm having a constant ache in my arm and shoulder. It's a strange sensation that I can't really describe. Never had problems physically before until I began being an MT. However, it didn't come on until about a year and a half of being an MT. For those who have been an MT for, say, 20 years, I don't know how you do it. You don't get health problems from working at McDonald's or Wal-Mart, I don't think. Typing 8 ...

Problems With Controlling Mother...Sep 25, 2011
I'm hoping this doesn't get too long winded, but it probably will, lol.  I have an exceptionally controlling mother (I'm 44).  She makes snide remarks about my parenting, my clothes, my job, you name it.  I got fed up about a month ago and blocked her from calling into my home (comcast can do that).  Her world's record of calling me at home was 12 times in one day.  Now she can only call my cell phone.  Stupid me I thought this would work out bet ...

Sister And Mother ProblemsDec 27, 2011

Having Problems With Brother's FriendJul 05, 2011
My family knew that I was looking for a new pet.  I wanted a cat or a kitten and had been looking in shelters and in ads for a pet, hoping to give an unwanted animal a good home.  I finally found a 3 year old super fat and fuzzy faded orange tabby cat and brought it home. Named him Puss in Boots because he reminds me of the character in Shrek 3, that fat!  Well my brother called me up and explained to me that a friend of his was looking for a home for ...

I Think This Would Solve A Lot Of Problems InstantlySep 09, 2012
I've thought about this before, and it occurred to me again while reading exerpts from Woodward's newest book...along with "rebuttals" from Obama, Pelosi, Boehner, Reid, etc.  Most of these amount to "that never happened". Also, I've thought about this in conjunction with things like the secret negotiations with pharmaceutical companies to gain their support for Obamacare.  I don't say this just happens on one side - it happens on both sides. I've often wonde ...

Hubby and I went out for Valentine's dinner last night.  We've been married 26 years.  He's 59.  Now, we've lived in this community for almost 20 years.  He knows these streets up and down and sideways, but on our way to the restaurant he turned the car into an oncoming ramp with a car coming right at us.  I tried not to freak, but was not completely calm when I said, "We can't go that way!"  He stopped short of committing to the ramp and ma ...

Did President Obama Know About The VA Problems?May 19, 2014
It's being reported that the president knew about the problems at the VA since 2008, and so he should since he is Commander in Chief.
