Knee problems

Posted: Dec 11, 2012

First let me start by saying that I have had two arthroscopies on my right knee and one on my left for basically worn out cartilage and some "fraying" around the edges of the knee cartilage, but never an outright tear (according to MRI studies all three times).  My knee problems have always started out first with pain, achy-type feeling, stiffness, and a tight band-like feeling around my knee, sometimes hurting on the outer back of my knee (I know I have a Baker's cyst in both knees, but this isn't the kind of pain I'm talking about, although the Baker's cysts have been very painful too), and then radiating to the front inside of my knee.  My last surgery on my right knee was November 2009, and I've had a new flare.  First surgery was 1998, so it lasted for 9 years.  Each time I've had arthroscopic surgery, it has been a relief, helping the pain immensely and clearing it up altogether.  This last time the tightness and stiffness never went away completely.  I'm a very active person, but have had to slow down my activities due to knee pain and discomfort, not incapacitating, just enough that I was afraid to push it lest the effusion come back and more surgery would be required).  Each time the doctor found that the knee joint was very inflamed, "very angry-looking" the doctor said about this last surgery in 2009.  With this latest flare-up I live in a different place so couldn't go to my regular doctor.  They did an MRI, x-rays, and a ton of blood work.  They highly, highly supsected a meniscus tear upon initial evaluation, but MRI did not show a tear, only lots of fluid and inflammation, and of course, the Baker's cyst.  I've had fluid removed twice, but this doctor did not want to give steroid injections, he doesn't like the lasting effect steroid has on your joints, and I feel the same way, although steroid shots in the past always gave me great relief, which were given just after an aspiration.  With this latest flare, I have just had the above-mentioned therapy, along with total NWB, use of crutches, and ice packs, but now no longer NWB, but I walk like an older person due to the pain.  The major effusion is now finally gone, it didn't come back after the last aspiration, but the pain is still there, worse with coming down stairs.  I am only 54 but my knees feel like an old lady because of the hobbling about I have to do and the obvious limp I now have.  I'm very, very frustrated.  The doctor says just take anti-inflammatories and let pain be my guide.  I've been trying to start back with strengthening exercises that I learned in PT, but it's very painful to bend my right knee, and I still can't bend it completely due to tightness and stiffness (and pain).

Has this happened to anyone, and if so, can you tell me what you did/are doing to treat yourself?

Also, I just wanted to add that my CRP level was over 200, and other levels were high on the initial blood work, but blood tests done a week later showed the CRP level at 90, and other levels were going down as well.

Thanks for any help or advice.  I'm at my wits end.

I'd like to give you some advice and it will probably be viewed with ire but it's my take, so you can take it or leave it. I won't respond to any other negative and/or hateful posts. I am 60 and have no health problems at all, take no medications and am still exercising with no pain in any joints. I have 4 siblings, two brothers one 64 and one 56, two sisters one 62 and one 58. All of my siblings have arthritis. My younger brother has crippling arthritis. My younger sister has huge knots in her hands from the arthritis. My older sister has had both knees replaced. They all experience some degree of arthritis, as well as other health complaints. They tell me I am blessed with good health, the "lucky" one, the only one who inherited the "good genes." I say BALONEY. I'm the only one of my siblings who has changed my diet. There are two foods, I believe, that will damage your joints and all my siblings continue to eat them...Dairy and pork. I haven't had dairy in 13 years. I gave up most meat (a little salmon now and then and turkey on holidays). I've never eaten pork because our church is against it and my mother never fed it to us growing up. After my mother died in 1993, my siblings began to eat it but I continued to avoid it, always have, always will. I continue to be in very good health. I can still run which is something none of my siblings can do. This is my take so, like I said, you may take it or leave it.... I believe the reason surgeries don't do much good is because the source of the pain is never corrected and that's what we eat. Surgery may help undo the damage that was caused by what we eat but, it will eventually return as we continue to eat the offending "foods." People may argue they have eaten these foods for years and are still in good health but you can say anything while in cyberspace. ;) Everyone I know who eats dairy and especially pork is in very poor health and they all continue to scoff at me. That's my advice. Take it or leave it. I wish you only the best.

I tried glucosamine chondroitin and 20 minutes on an exercise bike 2X a week. These each took about a month to show any effects, but it is definitely worth doing.

Knee InjectionsOct 21, 2009
Have you ever had Synvisc, Euflexxa, Hyalgan, or Supartz injections?  Did they help?  I've Googled it and have read yays and nays.  My doctor suggested I try a series of Euflexxa.  I've had many cortisone shots, but my doctor said cortisone actually makes the cartilage weaker (and I have thinning cartilage), so he doesn't want to do anymore of those, which I hate because they are like a miracle cure! (at least for a few weeks to a couple of months).  Thank ...

Knee ArthroscopyFeb 12, 2013
I had a knee arthroscopy February 1. I've had arthroscopic surgery before, but these incisions look different this time. There are two incisions about mid-knee, right and left sides of knee, that look like typical sutures tied with a knot, but below these two are smaller incisions with what appears to be a strand of suture running lengthwise across the incisions. Has anyone ever seen or heard about an arthroscopic surgery with sutures like this? I'm a big chicken with a very low pain ...

Knee PainJun 20, 2013
Have been told by orthopod that I have bone-on-bone in my right knee.  He suggested surgery and gave me Tramadol for the pain.  Surgery is not an option financially at this time.  I have been losing weight in order to take some of  the pressure off.  I cannot take the Tramadol and work because it makes me sleepy.    Cannot take NSAIDs because of the GI side effects. Any suggestions on how to deal? TIA ...

Please Pray For My KneeNov 30, 2016
Two years ago, I tore my medial meniscus and was thankfully able to heal in a few months by using crutches and participating in physical therapy.  On Thanksgiving, I hurt my knee again.  There was no precipitating factor other than just walking inside the house.  What is concerning is that I am now having pain even when not putting any pressure on my leg.  Please pray that this heals.  My insurance does not pay for specialists (like an orthopedist) or any imaging studies ...

Knee Swollen, Tight, PainfulOct 18, 2009
Have been having trouble with my knee since about spring of this year.  I had a knee scope ten years ago for some torn cartilage, and the knee did great for the ten years following, but flared up this past spring.  It gets a very tight and full feeling with a big bulge in the back of the knee, and I keep telling the doctor I believe it is a Baker's cyst, but he doesn't suggest anything for it.  He did tell me that is where the fluid goes because it has no place else to g ...

Injured Knee And No Money For DoctorOct 27, 2014
I got out of bed Saturday, and when I stepped down, there was sharp pain to my medial knee.  I cannot walk on it.  Thankfully, there is next to no pain when there is no pressure on it and it is not fully flexed or fully extended.  Medial meniscal tear and/or MCL tear?  I have leftover NSAIDs from a neck problem years ago and some old tramadol, which are helping.  On his way to borrow a walker from a friend, my husband passed a yard sale and noticed a pair of crutches. &n ...

Sports/overuse Knee Injuries?Oct 28, 2014
Hi, I've recently had a knee injury - something I've never had before, so I'm unfamiliar with what to expect.  Have any of you ever had a knee injury such as a sprain or ligament tear, and if so, what were your symptoms and how long did it take to heal?  Did it ever feel normal again? I'm in my 60's, and am still an avid rollerblader.  My knee problems started about 2 months ago, when I was getting a little tired near the end of a 12-mile group skate I w ...

Does anyone else have the problem of certain outside noise frequencies causing their eardrums to vibrate or pulse really fast? This only happens when I wear my headphones. I have noise-canceling headphones and can't actually hear the sound, just feel the vibrations in my eardrums. Mortgage ProblemsNov 12, 2009
Hi everyone - Anyone have any ideas about what to do with a bad mortgage, other than foreclosure I mean.  We got sold to a servicing company some time ago.  My DH decided to ask, just ask, about getting a loan modification and they automatically went ahead and did this without us filling out any paperwork.  Can you believe it!?  We tried calling and talking with them about this but got no where to say the least.  We decided to just keep paying our regular mortgage a ...

Period ProblemsMay 31, 2011
This may be too much info for some of you guys, so sorry in advance! My period is normally a very heavy flow with terrible cramps and lasts 6 to 8 days.  Lucky me, I know.  Last month it was normal (well, what I consider normal for me).  This month it was like 1 day of spotting and that was it.  I did have a bit of cramping, but this is not normal for me.  I haven't had sex in a couple months and my period last month was normal so I doubt I am pregnant. Any ideas? ...

Husband ProblemsAug 11, 2012
I need some opinions about some of the things my husband does. Basically, I feel that he is very controlling.  He is always making remarks when he can't get me on the phone that I must be with my "boyfriend".  If my phone goes off, he'll say ask if it's my boyfriend, and it is usually just an email from work or some type of business that I have an account with.  We have been married for 16 years, and I have never cheated on him.  My best friend since high scho ...

Problems With TV ReceptionApr 30, 2014
Tonight I dropped my Comcast remote, and it fell upside down on the carpet.  When I picked it up, it apparently hit a button that immediately made my TV reception extremely snowy.  Can't figure out how to fix it.  I did not go near the TV, so I am sure it has nothing to do with any cable connections.  Any advice would be helpful before I undertake the task of calling Comcast, which is not always a good experience.  Thanks! ...

Health Problems Being An MTSep 11, 2014
I'm a relatively new MT and already I'm having a constant ache in my arm and shoulder. It's a strange sensation that I can't really describe. Never had problems physically before until I began being an MT. However, it didn't come on until about a year and a half of being an MT.
