having problems with brother's friend

Posted: Jul 5, 2011

My family knew that I was looking for a new pet.  I wanted a cat or a kitten and had been looking in shelters and in ads for a pet, hoping to give an unwanted animal a good home.  I finally found a 3 year old super fat and fuzzy faded orange tabby cat and brought it home. Named him Puss in Boots because he reminds me of the character in Shrek 3, that fat!  Well my brother called me up and explained to me that a friend of his was looking for a home for their 3 month old Bengel because:  the wife and daughter had allergies, because he clawed everything, wasn't cuddly, they didn't like having to have a litter box in the house and basically did not want not keep him.

I went to see him, took one look at him and fell in love.  He's beautiful, tall, dark and spotted, thin build with long legs, just the opposite of my fatty Puss!  ((they say he's a Bengel and he does rather look like one, but they paid only $100 for him and I know Bengel cats are very expensive)  It has been a joy having these new kitties in my home.  I have had them both for about 4-1/2 months now.  They are both doing very well, are healthy, happy, very frisky, playful and very, very cuddly lovers.

A couple of weekends ago at a family outing my brother's friends were there and the wife asked how the cat was doing.  I told her very well and told her thank you and assured her that he was in a very happy hope and being well cared for.  She cried a bit (I need to add that she was intoxicated...) and told me that she wanted him back.  Her husband laughed it off as her being drunk, but over the course of the day she said it about 3 other times.  Even her daughter apologized for her, she's 16.

Last night at gathering at MY place (when we have family get togethers it is usual that we bring a friend or two to each other's place, it's always been this way) my brother's friends came over.  The wife (again intoxicated) saw the cat walking around, snatched him up and collapsed to the floor crying in a very exagerated way...  The cat got scared, bit her pretty good, scratched her legs and took off to hide under my bed.  after that she was walking around moaning and crying out loud about how sad she was, how she wanted the cat back and made a big scene.  My brother and I told her she needed to leave, she said she was going to, but she was taking the cat back.  She went into my room and started trying to get the cat from under the bed!  I told her 10 seconds to get out or I was calling the police.  (my sister actually made a grab for her hair, but we stopped it from getting any more physical)  She left, yelling and crying that she was coming back for the cat.  Her husband and daughter apologized and told me not to worry about the cat, it was mine and they even thanked me for taking it in.  Crazy woman on the other hand was yelling that she had his "papers" and was going to get him back.

I have invested time and money into this kitty, but more importantly, I LOVE HIM.  I am angry, yet at the same time it feels ... weird keeping him, like I've stole him from someone.   I have had him neutered, microchipped and well, he's mine!  If she comes back, I don't know what I'm going to do.  Should I offer to pay them something or just write her off as wacky and let it be, since her DH said he's my kitty?

Coincidentally, I have had 5 hang up calls today from "unknown caller"...  hmm.

Still, I would suggest you talk to an attorney about this, as this lady could be a headache. I suspect a letter from a lawyer will put a stop to this nonsense. The cost should be nominal.

THATS YOUR CAT!! - Spaz's mom

People don't get to change their minds after they give an animal away! He's yours! Don't give her a second thought and if you continue to get phone calls or ever hear another peep from her, file harrassement charges and get a restraining order. That'll fix her.

DO NOT GIVE HER THAT CAT! If she couldn't get him to be a great cat like you did then she obviously does not know how to take care of him. She is just seeing that you did all the hard work for her and wants him back. Write it off as wacky and let it be. Call your local police department and see if they can advise you on your rights. Maybe that will make you feel better. Think about if you were the cat and how you would feel if you have to leave a loving home and go back to a place where it was not so great. Be strong - keep your pet!

EXACTLY! Too bad you stopped your sister lol!

she's a drunk! - ronny

[ In Reply To ..]
Both times she's said she wanted the cat back she was drunk! in between any of those times has she made any attempts? She's just causing drunk drama. Don't waste your time with her. It's your cat. PS. I have a super fat fuzzy tabby named Puss too!

No wonder he bit & scratched her - drunk people - make animals SUPER nervous.

Her daughter & husband are right, and very kind & wise to let you know they're glad you took in the Bengal cat. You did the cat a HUGE favor - don't give him back. I would avoid the nut-case lady.... don't go to any events that she'll be at, (at LEAST not for a while, anyway!), and by all means, do NOT let her in your house again. If she does make contact with you and asks why you're excluding/shunning her, tell her she needs help, and that you'll be more than happy to associate with her again once she gets that help, and sobers up, but that otherwise, you don't want her around.

Maybe have your brother say something to his friend about upset you are. Hopefully the husband will put a stop to his wife's childish behavior. I don't get why she would want the cat back if she and her daughter have allergies. Nutty.

If she comes back you call the police - sm

These are your babies now, not hers. She has no right to take them. There are plenty of other cats/kittens who are in need of a good home. She can get another cat.

If she tries to take them it's theft and have her arrested.

Do not offer to pay her something and tell that guy to get his wife in touch with reality. If she had allergies, etc, that is not going to change.

Cats in need of good homes are out there. If you feel the need to get her anything, get her another cat/kitten, but not yours.

I disagree. NEVER get an another for another - person, especially a whacked-out -sm

alcoholic person like this. She would be just as inept with a new kitten as she was with the Bengal. (And just as allergic - she IS a nut-case!)

There are some people in this world who should NOT have animals, and this woman is one of them.

EEK! TYPO! I meant "never get an ANIMAL for - another person". (sorry!)

Point well taken - should have thought of that before I posted - sm

Forgot about the alcoholic and crazy part. Reading back over it you are correct. This person should never have an animal and I hope her husband puts a stop to her.

I hope you are home most of the time, sounds - sm -

[ In Reply To ..]
that she is seeing if you are home and plans to come over if no one answers the phone and break in to get the cat. If you are in a house (or apartment) let your neighbors know to keep and eye out if they can (if you happen to know what she drives), odds are if she does try it she might be drunk again, and hopefully get caught and get a DUI. You can do a call trace, check with your local phone company or *69 the unknown caller and see who answers. Woman sounds quit loony, they probably got rid of the cat because this lady is nuts. But definitely call the police, or get a restraining order if she keeps it up. Good luck.

the crazy lady - me

You can report her to the prosecuters office. Call the office, they usually answer the phone. Ask them what to do to protect yourself from her because you anticipate some trouble from her and she may be harrassing you which is against the law too. Save your receipts and dates and prosecute her even if you have to get a restraining order. She may try something else while you're not home. That cat probably hates her, and you saved it from her.

The only "paper" I would hand her is - the number to A.A.

Prayer For Friend's Brother-in-lawAug 31, 2013
Please pray for my friend and her brother-in-law who is suffering with ALS.  He also has been diagnosed with MS and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.  This is almost unheard of to be hit with three major diseases, but the Cleveland Cllinic says this happens sometimes in someone who has never, ever been sick, and then all of a sudden the immune system cannot recognize and fight off disease.  He is now unable to even speak in single syllables, which he could do just a short time ago ...

Please Pray For My Brother-in-lawDec 10, 2012
I just got a message from my sister.  Please pray for my brother in law Bill.  My sister said he is in ICU in serious condition with an infection in his stomach and is septic.  He is incoherent and not breathing well.  One Dr said that his kidneys show being shut down and he will probably require dialysis and a ventolator to breathe and then she had the audacity to say he may go on life support.  Fortunately he is starting to be a little coherant, his blood pressure went ...

Brother's DeathJul 24, 2013
I posted several days ago about being abused by my sister.  Today she finally called after having thrown me away again a few weeks ago.  She called to tell me in her nasty, sarcastic voice that my brother died this morning at the shore.  He and his wife, grown children and grandchildren went to the shore for the week to celebrate their wedding anniversary.  They were walking on the boardwalk this morning and he got extreme chest tightness.  He fell on the boardwalk and w ...

Should I Contact H's Estranged Brother?Oct 30, 2009
Just a long story short, MIL and H's dad divorced when H was about 3 months old.  H never had many relations with his dad except 1 visit the whole time until he turned 18.  FIL did have another child, a boy, after his marriage to MIL.  Well, 6 months ago that son, H's half brother, called MIL and wanted to contact H to tell him their father was dying.  I was there listening to MIL's end of the conversation and she was pretty hostile towards the boy, now a man ( ...

My Brother Was Targeted For An IRS AuditFeb 13, 2014
My brother was audited by the IRS. He did not realize he needed to report/fill out some form for a small estate amount he received in a will. He subsequently got the discrepancy cleared up and it was no big deal. There is this guy, Ben Carson, who seems to be all upset that he thinks he was targeted by the IRS. I am thinking he makes a lot of money and perhaps has had a filing mistake or 2. Here are some common reasons that people are audited as per Kiplinger's *Making Too Much Mon ...

Hi everyone - Anyone have any ideas about what to do with a bad mortgage, other than foreclosure I mean.  We got sold to a servicing company some time ago.  My DH decided to ask, just ask, about getting a loan modification and they automatically went ahead and did this without us filling out any paperwork.  Can you believe it!?  We tried calling and talking with them about this but got no where to say the least.  We decided to just keep paying our regular mortgage a ...

Link Sought Between Brother, 3 Waltham KillingsApr 24, 2013
Just a note: Boston Globe states today is the last day to read articles online without subscribing.   It was one of the most gruesome killings in Greater Boston in many years: three young men found with their throats slit inside a Waltham apartment on a quiet residential street, their bodies sprinkled with marijuana.
