Persistent rash problems-please help!

Posted: Jun 3, 2011

Hi everyone-I have a really annoying medical condition and am wondering if anyone has had the same thing.

I am 54, 5 years of menopause under my belt. I have pretty much stopped with the hot flashes, insomnia and extreme mood swings (hubby is happy). Roughly 18 months ago I started deveoping random areas with hives controlled by antihistamines. A year ago I developed vulvodynia (so painful!) and started using small doses of premarin vaginal cream twice a week. It successfully kept it under control and my doctor thought I might have to use it until menopause was over.

Last fall I noticed a red rash developing on the lower portion of the front of my neck spreading downward in a "V" pattern just above my cleavage. It took a few weeks, but it got redder and hotter, and then my neck broke out like crazy in hives and I wound up in the ER.  At this same time for weeks my body would be cold but my hairline was always sweaty, and it didn't matter what the temperature was. My doctor thought I needed to take the small dose of Premarin pills and quit the cream. Within 4 days I was wheezing and the rash was out of control. I stopped the pills and it took about 10 days to wind down to its original state of redness.

I would have temporary flare-ups and be stuck on antihistamines untiil it would subside. My doctor thinks I might be having a reaction to the estrogens in soy. I have been diligent about removing soy from my diet (easier than I thought it would be) and have noticed some improvement, however, it still gets a little out of control on its own. I have had a ton of labs the last 6 months showing my thryoid is fine, hormones are normal for my menopausal state, lipids, cbc, everything OK.

I have had no soy anything for a week now, and it is starting to flare up again. I get a horribly itchy neck and jawline for a day or two before the rash kicks into high gear. Has anyone lived through this or heard about it, and can you give me some info on what to do? Nothing I buy OTC or the pharmaceutical steroid creams are helping the rash or itch, and it makes we crazy, not to mention I can't hide it with clothing as the heat generated sends it off the map. Anything you can share with me would be greatly appreciated, sorry this is so long...

Nerves? - Old Lady

Sometimes people don't like to think about it, but nerves (as in anxiety-type) can cause all sorts of skin issues. Ask you doc if you could try a mild tranquilzer for a while. If it helps, that may be your answer, then you could decide how to proceed from there.

Miliaria?

Vulvodynia can be treated with an antidepressant.

Eighteen months ago, do you recall being bitten by an insect? Did you do/eat/go someplace not routine?

Reaction to the HRT - th

It does sound like a typical reaction to the HRT.

Have you seen an allergist? The fact - that you were wheezing

[ In Reply To ..]
along with the rash would probably lead me to want to see an allergist. They test for all kinds of things environmental, foods, etc. They also order labs a lot different than a PCP. I was a child that would just hive up for no reason, and today I am on allergy shots. It is genetic, and my dad will just hive up out of nowhere, but of course, he hasn't been to the allergist about it.

Thank you for your responses! - The Analog Kid

To everyone who replied-thank you so much! I have another appointment with my doctor in July, and if it hasn't gotten better she did say she would refer me to an allergist. I have been off of all HRT for awhile, and luckily the vulvodynia has subsided for now.

I will certaintly talk to the doctor about the nerves issue, I do suffer from anxiety on occasion. Last summer I was bitten by a spider on my leg, and it swelled up so badly and made me feverish. I wound up in the hospital and on a superbug-fighting type of abx. The ER doctor said it looked like possibly a black widow or wolf spider bite. I NEVER would have put that together with my rash, but I will certaintly bring it up at my next visit. Could this create a chronic problem, and if so, will it eventually leave my system? Guess what I'll be researching today!

Again, thank you everyone for your suggestions, I appreciate them all. If I ever get a concrete answer I will post it. Thanks everyone!

Yeast overgrowth triggered by HRT, ABX - probably allergy

to fermented foods (soy, vinegars, aged cheese, yogurt). Steroids do nothing.

PS - not talking about vaginal yeast - saa

but systemic, in gut. Skin problems generally reflect a nutritional deficiency of some type. Yeast would interfere with absorption of nutrients and serotonin processing which occurs mostly in gut.

The Skin Rash That Refuses To DieApr 16, 2016
Anyone got good skin rash remedies?  I've had a rash on my left forearm for several YEARS.... it waxes and wanes, but is always dry and plaque-like.  Very similar to psoriasis, but my arthritis is osteo, not inflammatory, so I'm pretty sure it's just some form of eczema.  It's sometimes dry and scaly, sometimes weepy (especially when I scratch too much) and has become scarred as a result. I've tried everything:  Cortisone creams, dry skin creams, ant ...

I Have Fiery Red, Scaly Rash In The Corner Of My Eye And Down The Side Of My Nose??Feb 28, 2010
I have tried everything from throwing out my masacara, eye shadows, and eye liners and buying all new.  I've replaced my jar of foundation with a new jar.  I've been putting hydrocortisone cream on it twice a day and still it doesn't go away.  I tried Benadryl cream, a cornucopia of moisturizers and it doesn't get better.  It peels, itches and burns sometimes, but mostly it's just plain ugly.  I'm fair skinned and if I go without makeup, all ...

AL Deals With Rash Of Shootings Since Fri Injuring/killing 3 Kids,Dec 16, 2012
Since court cases are often won by arguing preponderance of the evidence, it may prove useful to draw attention to these everyday situations each time they happen, as was suggested in an earlier post. Alabama is one of those states that does NOT have an "opt-out" gun law in place for such institutions as businesses, schools, hospitals and other public gatherings who wish to circumvent existing lax concealed carry law by declaring a "gun-free zone" policy and posting a sign.  In most states ...

Ear ProblemsApr 05, 2016
Does anyone else have the problem of certain outside noise frequencies causing their eardrums to vibrate or pulse really fast? This only happens when I wear my headphones. I have noise-canceling headphones and can't actually hear the sound, just feel the vibrations in my eardrums. It's only certain things for me like lawnmowers, chainsaws, four-wheelers, and some car/truck engines. Most of the time it isn't bad if whatever is making the noise is just there for a moment, but i ...

Mortgage ProblemsNov 12, 2009
Hi everyone - Anyone have any ideas about what to do with a bad mortgage, other than foreclosure I mean.  We got sold to a servicing company some time ago.  My DH decided to ask, just ask, about getting a loan modification and they automatically went ahead and did this without us filling out any paperwork.  Can you believe it!?  We tried calling and talking with them about this but got no where to say the least.  We decided to just keep paying our regular mortgage a ...

Period ProblemsMay 31, 2011
This may be too much info for some of you guys, so sorry in advance! My period is normally a very heavy flow with terrible cramps and lasts 6 to 8 days.  Lucky me, I know.  Last month it was normal (well, what I consider normal for me).  This month it was like 1 day of spotting and that was it.  I did have a bit of cramping, but this is not normal for me.  I haven't had sex in a couple months and my period last month was normal so I doubt I am pregnant. Any ideas? ...

Husband ProblemsAug 11, 2012
I need some opinions about some of the things my husband does. Basically, I feel that he is very controlling.  He is always making remarks when he can't get me on the phone that I must be with my "boyfriend".  If my phone goes off, he'll say ask if it's my boyfriend, and it is usually just an email from work or some type of business that I have an account with.  We have been married for 16 years, and I have never cheated on him.  My best friend since high scho ...

Knee ProblemsDec 11, 2012
First let me start by saying that I have had two arthroscopies on my right knee and one on my left for basically worn out cartilage and some "fraying" around the edges of the knee cartilage, but never an outright tear (according to MRI studies all three times).  My knee problems have always started out first with pain, achy-type feeling, stiffness, and a tight band-like feeling around my knee, sometimes hurting on the outer back of my knee (I know I have a Baker's cyst in both knees, b ...

Problems With TV ReceptionApr 30, 2014
Tonight I dropped my Comcast remote, and it fell upside down on the carpet.  When I picked it up, it apparently hit a button that immediately made my TV reception extremely snowy.  Can't figure out how to fix it.  I did not go near the TV, so I am sure it has nothing to do with any cable connections.  Any advice would be helpful before I undertake the task of calling Comcast, which is not always a good experience.  Thanks! ...

Health Problems Being An MTSep 11, 2014
I'm a relatively new MT and already I'm having a constant ache in my arm and shoulder. It's a strange sensation that I can't really describe. Never had problems physically before until I began being an MT. However, it didn't come on until about a year and a half of being an MT. Problems With Controlling Mother...Sep 25, 2011
I'm hoping this doesn't get too long winded, but it probably will, lol.  I have an exceptionally controlling mother (I'm 44).  She makes snide remarks about my parenting, my clothes, my job, you name it.  I got fed up about a month ago and blocked her from calling into my home (comcast can do that).  Her world's record of calling me at home was 12 times in one day.  Now she can only call my cell phone.  Stupid me I thought this would work out bet ...

Sister And Mother ProblemsDec 27, 2011

Having Problems With Brother's FriendJul 05, 2011
My family knew that I was looking for a new pet.  I wanted a cat or a kitten and had been looking in shelters and in ads for a pet, hoping to give an unwanted animal a good home.  I finally found a 3 year old super fat and fuzzy faded orange tabby cat and brought it home. Named him Puss in Boots because he reminds me of the character in Shrek 3, that fat!  Well my brother called me up and explained to me that a friend of his was looking for a home for ...

Teenage Girl/Boy ProblemsApr 26, 2011

I Think This Would Solve A Lot Of Problems InstantlySep 09, 2012
I've thought about this before, and it occurred to me again while reading exerpts from Woodward's newest book...along with "rebuttals" from Obama, Pelosi, Boehner, Reid, etc.  Most of these amount to "that never happened". Also, I've thought about this in conjunction with things like the secret negotiations with pharmaceutical companies to gain their support for Obamacare.  I don't say this just happens on one side - it happens on both sides. I've often wonde ...
