Trouble walking and balance problems

Posted: May 18, 2015

Hi: I have been having balance and gait issues for months. I also have severs L5-S1 right foraminal stenosis. I thought my issues were related to my back. I went to the neurosurgeon last Thursday and they told me my issues could be related to normal pressure hydrocephalus or cervical myelopathy. I have to have a CAT scan of my brain and a cervical MRI. I have no neck problems except I now also have CTS like symptoms on left and partially on the right. I had a cortisone shot in wrist and have to wear a splint for 30 days and re-evaluate. If it is NPH that requires a shunt to be placed to drain fluid. Do any of you know of someone with this and did it affect their walking? My memory is good right now. If it is my neck, I would have to have surgery. I still face surgery on L-5 S-1 again. I also researched symptoms for multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy. The thing is all of these diseases have similar symptoms. I just hope they can find out what is going on. I was walking with a cane and now am using a wheeled walker which helps me keep my spine straight. I had to give up MT job last June. The odd thing too I was never bothered with carpal tunnel until the bad walking issues started. I can walk but I feel like a robot with short choppy movements and i feel like I am trying to pull an elephant behind me. I am worn out physically when walking especially without my mobility devices. It is so depressing too. I have got to the point now that I am not confident at all to even go to the store by myself. Say prayers for me. ;

I have a friend who has a shunt. She had such horrible headaches. I don't think her memory is affected, but not sure if she has problems with her walking. She was in one of those wheeled things in Walmart, but I see lots of people in those. She just may not have felt like walking in that huge super store.

Anyway, I think she is better she she had it. Maybe you won't have to have it. Could be something entirely different.

I have this too, severe balance and ambulation problems and use a cane/walker. I first had severe neck pain though with arm symptoms, then balance problems. Had a negative MRI for MS, but do have cervical myelopathy for cervical spinal stenosis even after extensive surgery 10 years ago. My prayers are with you as I know the hell you are going through.

Thanks for reply back. I have had cervical neck strain in the past. On looking back I thought that I had just slept wrong and had crick-like symptoms. One was 3-1/2 years ago and other was years and years ago. I have had MRI of lower spine recently and next week MRI of cervical neck. It is hard for me to think it is my neck though as I do not have neck pain per say at all, just hands with numbness which does come from neck, but from researching neck pain does not always exist in some cases. They are doing the head CT for NPH. I wonder if CT would show up MS lesions too or would have to have MRI of brain. I am going to ask. MS lesions also can show up in spine, but radiologist could have overlooked that as he was looking only for spinal stenosis. I am making a detailed list to ask all doctors working with me. They may have overlooked stuff and not really put symptoms together. It is so annoying to have to ask family to help with little things even for me. Half of the time it takes them forever to help out, but appreciate what they do. Even putting dishes on shelves or putting folded towels up on shelf is a problem as my arms feel weaker and I feel like it is a strain. I hopefully will get to the root of the problem soon. It is stressing me out too.

Keep us posted please - anonie

Keep us posted. We are all wanting things to come out better than the doctor thinks.

My cardiologist had me scared I had endocarditis. It is all okay, tests and echo. I had pneumonia and was hospitalized for 12 days in January. Sinuses are bothering me and was sick again, almost as bad as I was with pneumonia.

I just hope this is the last of it for this year anyway. Tired of going for tests and to doctors.

I went and got results from CT of brain ventricles and MRI of cervical neck. Brain is fine. Neck showed C4-5, C5-6 HNP, compression, bone spurs. I am going to have surgery on my neck July 13. They told me that surgery was needed sooner than later. I forgot to ask about surgery on my L5-S1, but I will. The other issue I am having is that my toes on both feet are staying cold off and on and are turning reddish purple. Doctors do not believe it is from my spine problem, but a circulation problem. The toes hurt and I do not even like a bed sheet to rub over them. So more tests. The odd thing is that my neck does not hurt at all., but is compressing my spine. I am prediabetic now and am on Metformin, and I know diabetics can have issues with feet. They feel like they are sunburned. I am pretty sure it is a circulation problem. Will update when I find out more.

I am glad you don't have MS. My neck was so bad it compressed my face and I have trigeminal neuralgia and occipital neuralgia and no facial nerves under my eyes, but the docs would not admit the surgery caused it. I hope your cervical spine surgery goes well. I would also see a rheumatologist and ask him about your feet. You might have a rheumatologic condition on top of your C spine. Hope not, but it is always good to get an opinion. I developed fibromyalgia from all my cervical spine issues and it can cause a lot of problems too.

I don't know if this will help your feet, but I use a product called O'Occitane Foot Cream. It has arnica and lavender essential oils in a shea butter cream. It helps the pain in my feet a lot and is very soothing.

Best of luck to you! I know how frustrating it is.

How Ted Cruz Would Balance The Budget.Nov 12, 2015
going to pay for more big government business as usual. At the CNBC debate on October 28, Ted Cruz released his tax reform proposal, which I believe is the best of all the presidential candidates' plans. At Tuesday night's debate, Cruz released a spending reduction plan showing how he will pay for the tax cut involved in the tax reform plan. For the individual income tax under his tax reform, Cruz's plan provides for one flat rate of 10% on everything wages, capital gains, ...

Issues About Balance Transfers In Paying OffSep 28, 2015
I have a credit card that I owe quite a bit on. I asked for a drop in the percentage rate so hopefully could pay it off faster and was told no, I already had the lowest rate they gave out. I then decided to switch CC and go with one that offered 0% for 17 months. I called, was told approved for the entire amount to be paid off to my original CC and then made another call this weekend to find out how the money would be sent, again told it was for the full amount and would be paid by wire transfer ...

More Walking DeadMar 10, 2015
Sunday was a good episode.ᅠ  And invisible Carol, well, nothing like having the cookie lady threaten you with being a walker meal as a kid.ᅠᅠ  Some of you may already know this, but I thought I would pass it along anyway.ᅠ  It's only six episodes to start, but it has already been renewed for season two.  Maybe it won't seem so long between seasons of TWD now.  They're going to need a Daryl type character, I hope they realize that.    ...

i finally watched the last episode of the Talking Dead, there is a surprise guest on this Sunday, which means we are gong to lose someone.  They've already killed off almost every one on my list so far, I only have two left, the preacher and Sasha, and that list was supposed to last until the first part of season six.  I'm getting a little worried about Maggie as she is starting to fit the criteria, but they've only ever killed off One main character in a season finally, ...

Barbara Walters Walking...Nov 22, 2010
I've been noticing that when Barbara Walters walks out at the start of the view, she seems to be having a sort of difficult time stepping up to her seat .  Have also noticed she'sbeen having some difficulty with finding or expressing words.  Another thing, she's been interrupting so much more than usual lately and more argumentative, I sense some tenseness among the others...and like she is trying everyone's patience.  Don't take this as bashing her, I lik ...

Anyone Watch Walking Dead On AMC?Mar 19, 2012
Anyone else watch Walking Dead on AMC? I have to say, that season finale last night had me holding my breath for the first 25 minutes.  Downright horrifying and much better than what TV "horror" fare usually offers, that's for sure! At least at the end they confirmed there is indeed a season 3 in the works and didn't leave us hanging like they did at the end of season 1.  Anyway, just curious as to if anyone on these boards watches and enjoys this program as much as I do. ...

She didn\'t break the skin, just bruised her.  She just ran up to the lady, jumped on her and bit her in the rear end.  I was sitting on the front porch when it happened and I immediately flew off the porch after my dog.  I apologized up down to the lady.  Asked her if she was okay.  She went home and of course called the police and I was given a court summons.  I went to court this evening where basically I took a beating from the judge.  And of course th ...

Walking While Black In . . . AmericaAug 27, 2014
"Apparently, it doesn’t matter where a black person walks in this country. Police will always find a way to arrest them and violate their rights. But this time, officers bit off more than they can chew. Television producer Charles Belk is tall, bald, and black as are many African-American men in America. However, based on that broad description, Beverly Hills Police Department arrested Belk for simply walking down La Cienega Boulevard on Friday night. They were looking for a bank rob ...

Is Casey Anthony A Dead Woman Walking? Jul 02, 2011
I think it will all depend on closing arguments and if all Jose Baez has is the drowning accident that was never testified to, the molestation that was never testified to, and stopped cold with no premedidation theory by computer searches that weren't done by Cindy, she may get the death penalty.  Those chloroform, neck breaking, household items as weapons searches were being done by Casey back in March when her friends were making plans to go to Puerto Rico, proving premedid ...

Gramps TroubleFeb 16, 2011
So just a few months ago, my grandma passed away and it was very sudden. My grandparents were married for 67 years and she predeceased gramps. My grandpa was never the kind of man to "take care" of himself, meaning grams always did the cooking and cleaning , took care of the kids and so on, she was a good wife. Now that she has passed, dealing with gramps has become a real issue. I"m sure he is very lonely after having been with someone that long and suddenly without. But he is already contempla ...
