Opinions on Kids and Meds

What is your opinion on kids on medications to keep them calm? Especially boys. Boys are boys, and they all inherently have "ADHD" until they're about 16. <g> I think it's a matter of discipline, not drugs.

Also, it just kills me that kids who have behavioral problems and who are in chaotic home environments, are drugged and therapied to death, then stuck in the same horrible nutty home environment. Drug the kid, ship the kid to therapy, but keep the kid in the same home chaotic environment? They don't drug the parents/guardians and send them to therapy.

Way too many times parents, teachers, and even doctors turn to drugs to make the kids conform. I am not so sure this is in their best interest. When my daughter was 8, her tutor, teacher, and guidance counselor said she needed drugs, even though she did not have a behavior problem. She had an attention problem. The pediatrician said, "She will never get it from me." After his conversation with the school IEP planners, they never brought it up again.

My daughter was an honor roll student in high school, and on the Dean's List in college. She is now a special education teacher herself. There are extreme cases where children do need the drugs; that or take them out of mainstream and have someone work with them one on one. Most cases, teachers, counselors, etc. do not like a child's behavior, and many would agree, but drugs are not the answer. There is no accounting for stupid parents. Your children behave the way you make them behave, consistently. Drugs are just easier. My nephew took them beginning in first grade. He is now 21, and does not believe he can do anything without drugs. Unfortunately, he turned to illegal drugs because he believes, "I am not hurting anyone else, and they make me a better person." Sad.

Some children with a clinical diagnosis should definitely have drugs prescribed. Not children who have no discipline or support.

We can't expect a kid to behave in a reasonable fashion if the grown-ups all around them are behaving horribly. That one always gets me. Parents (or whoever) screaming, fighting, flying off the handle, whatever, then expect the kid to act normal?

Yes, it is true that children who grow up in chaotic homes will mimic that behavior, but I don't think that is what the OP was talking about.

I have recently asked that my child be placed on ADHD meds...I did that the day after she bolted away from me to cross a street without looking, and then crossed it back to me without looking. (BTW, I had been holding her hand when she bolted). She was 8 and had already been hit by a car earlier in life by running into traffic, so it was absolutely time for her lack of impulse control to be dealt with. I work from home. I volunteer in the school. There is no drama in my home. I screen potential playmates so that she has good influences in her life.

After she had been on the meds for a couple of weeks, I asked if she saw any benefit from it. She said it helped her "words" come better, meaning that her thinking is clearer. She no longer darts across the street, but I still hold her hand anyway. She is getting perfect scores on tests. She no longer has anxiety attacks when asked to do her homework. In fact, she rises from her bed in the morning able to stay on task with dressing and chores, come home eager to do her homework, no longer trying to fill her time with TV or video games because she does not need those stimulants any longer.

You can blast me if you like for medicating my child, but it was the right thing to do in our situation. Am I happy with the side effects? Not in the least and I am considering a homeopathic approach. The downside to that is the shear number of nutriotional supplements to be taken daily and whether I could get her to comply with doing that as she hates to swallow pills. So, for now, we will use Adderall.

Most supplements are not regulated by the government, so be very careful. Everything we put into our bodies has to get "filtered" somewhere. They don't have info on a lot of those pills in terms of damage to the liver or kidneys.

Over and over, I hear people saying that "it's natural, so it can't hurt you." Not true. Red yeast rice is natural. While it's effective for lowering cholesterol, it's just as bad on the liver as cholesterol pills, they're finding out.

Point is, at least with meds, they KNOW what it can hurt in the body and how to test all along to monitor.

So, you're going to put this kid on several "natural" supplements every day? Why? At least they know about Adderall, whatever that may be. I'm sure there's plenty of info on it that is UNBIASED, not studied through just the manufacturer itself.

Just because something is regulated by the fed doesn't make it totally safe. A lot of drugs have been pushed through FDA approval, only to be recalled later because of dire side effects/death rate. Also, a lot of "unbiased" research is actually funded by the drug manufacturers... unbiased my rear!

Maybe you should research Adderall versus natural/homeopathic remedies before making such claims. Might help you with your sheepelitis. Would at least be nice if you found out what the medication actually is first.

I think I'm trying to say that nobody should give an 8-year-old mass quantities of supplements or anything else.

For example, if you have an adopted child who suffered from the effects of fetal exposure to drugs/alcohol and standard drugs caused enough side effects so as to make them an inappropriate choice, you might carefully consider using nutritional supplements in your young child. I have a friend whose adopted child has several learning disabilities that are well treated with nutritional supplements because all the drugs used to treat one diagnosis causes worsening of another diagnosis. Most people who advocate "mass doses of nutritional supplements" are very well informed before starting that endeavor, probably much more so than those who take FDA-approved drugs.

In the last 18 years, I've gained 45 pounds. I've taken phentermine twice (purchased on line), which worked very well. I also did the Atkins diet which worked well. Hi all, What do you think about people who pray for, what I term, silly things? I live in a semidetached neighborhood and the neighbors on one side constantly burn a fire pit with wood pallets and whatever in it all the time at least 4 to 5 times a week. Need carpet that will wear well and stand up to cats (with claws), hairballs, etc. We looked at nylon carpet, but that is too pricey.
