knee swollen, tight, painful

Posted: Oct 18, 2009

Have been having trouble with my knee since about spring of this year.  I had a knee scope ten years ago for some torn cartilage, and the knee did great for the ten years following, but flared up this past spring.  It gets a very tight and full feeling with a big bulge in the back of the knee, and I keep telling the doctor I believe it is a Baker's cyst, but he doesn't suggest anything for it.  He did tell me that is where the fluid goes because it has no place else to go (when I bend the knee).  I had an MRI a couple of months ago, and it didn't show anything torn or surgical.  I'm just doing PT now, taking glucosamine and chondroitin, icing, and anti-inflammatories.  None of this is helping, I mean, my knee starts feeling better for a day or two, but then it just flares right back up again.  Just curious if anyone can give me any advice, what has worked for you for a similar or same problem?  Thanks in advance.

Are you seeing GP or orthopaedist? - Gal Friday

If just your PCP, I would ask to see an orthopod.

knee swollen, tight, painful - bad knees

I am seeing an orthopedic surgeon. Bought a Cho-Pat strap today, as recommended by my physical therapist, thus far it is doing nothing to help me.

I would suggest a second opinion, just for peace of mind. - Gal Friday

If this has been going on for some period of time, I'd get another viewpoint personally. If not, give it time as PT, meds, etc. do take time.

I have bad knees, too, but if I stay with exercises I do okay.

Good luck!
My apologies, just re-read your post. - Gal Friday

Sorry, was responding to last message and forgot you said in your first that this problem had been going on since the spring.

I think you should get another opinion. A simple scope may be your answer. Again, just IMHO.

You know, I tend to agree with you that a second opinion wouldn't hurt. Think I'll start looking for another doctor today. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for your input and advice.

What do you do for your knees exactly? I've been doing light squats, hamstring stretches, weight resistance (when I'm at PT but no machine at home), but do floor exercises with weights strapped to my ankles at home, and take glucosamine chondroitin. Thus far none of this has helped me. I keep having regular flare-ups. I do tend to be impatient, and I am sure these things just take time. I'm just not used to having bum knees, am pretty active, and guess I'm in denial and don't want to accept it, so if there is something surgical to fix it, I'd like to know.

Tight Budgets Lead To More Civilians Used For PolicingOct 12, 2010
Police agencies across the country are recruiting thousands of civilians for a growing number of duties previously performed by uniformed cops, in an unusual concession to local budget cuts. The positions — some paid and others volunteer — are transforming every-day citizens into crime-scene investigators, evidence gatherers and photographers in what some analysts suggest is a striking new trend in American policing. "It's all being driven by the economy and we should ex ...

Painful MammogramNov 12, 2010
I had a mammogram a few days ago which was very painful.  The tech asked if I had a high caffeine intake, which unfortunately I do.  She said this can make the test more painful.  I saw on line that if you reduce or eliminate the caffeine intake about a week prior to the test it will help.  I must say it was painful enough to perhaps make me avoid going back next year.  It has been some years since I have had a mammography.  I am glad I went, but it was not a p ...

Painful Thumb And WristDec 12, 2011
About five weeks ago I was cleaning my chairs and sofa with a small Bissel cleaner, and really overdid it.  I have been diagnsed with de Quervain's tenosynovitis of the right wrist.   I tried anti-inflammatory medication which only worked for a day, then back to bad pain again.   My doctor started me on a course of prednisone, which I took for ten days to no avail.   I am scheduled for an appointment with a hand specialist.  I know they sometimes do s ...

Mastectomy/reconstruction - How Painful Is This?Feb 24, 2010
I'll be having a mastectomy with an immediate reconstruction soon.  Can anybody tell me how much pain I can expect?  I was back to work after my TVH in 3 days with almost no pain whatsoever, so I generally bounce back fast, and I'm young (42).  Of course I can ask the surgeon when I see him again, but if anybody can fill me in in the meantime, that would be great.  I want to be mentally prepared.        ...

Stiff Joints. Sometimes Painful, Sometimes Not.Apr 15, 2012
I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem.  Sometimes my finger joints, knees, wrists, and ankles get so stiff that I cannot move them unless I pop them.  Sometimes they hurt extremely bad until I pop them, sometimes no pain, and sometimes they just won't pop.  This is something that I have been dealing with for as long as I can remember, so it isn't something that has been caused by the sitting from doing MT or anything like that.  I have had one doctor ...

Swollen Foot From Foot PedalMay 29, 2010
Recnetly I have noticed that towards the end of my shift, my footpedal foot gets swollen.  It does not hurt, but if I continue working for a few hours after it starts to swelll, it does get pretty uncomfortable.  The swelling takes a few hours to go back down after I quit working and put my feet up.  I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and what they did about it. ...

Knee InjectionsOct 21, 2009
Have you ever had Synvisc, Euflexxa, Hyalgan, or Supartz injections?  Did they help?  I've Googled it and have read yays and nays.  My doctor suggested I try a series of Euflexxa.  I've had many cortisone shots, but my doctor said cortisone actually makes the cartilage weaker (and I have thinning cartilage), so he doesn't want to do anymore of those, which I hate because they are like a miracle cure! (at least for a few weeks to a couple of months).  Thank ...

Knee ProblemsDec 11, 2012
First let me start by saying that I have had two arthroscopies on my right knee and one on my left for basically worn out cartilage and some "fraying" around the edges of the knee cartilage, but never an outright tear (according to MRI studies all three times).  My knee problems have always started out first with pain, achy-type feeling, stiffness, and a tight band-like feeling around my knee, sometimes hurting on the outer back of my knee (I know I have a Baker's cyst in both knees, b ...

Knee ArthroscopyFeb 12, 2013
I had a knee arthroscopy February 1. I've had arthroscopic surgery before, but these incisions look different this time. There are two incisions about mid-knee, right and left sides of knee, that look like typical sutures tied with a knot, but below these two are smaller incisions with what appears to be a strand of suture running lengthwise across the incisions. Has anyone ever seen or heard about an arthroscopic surgery with sutures like this? I'm a big chicken with a very low pain ...

Knee PainJun 20, 2013
Have been told by orthopod that I have bone-on-bone in my right knee.  He suggested surgery and gave me Tramadol for the pain.  Surgery is not an option financially at this time.  I have been losing weight in order to take some of  the pressure off.  I cannot take the Tramadol and work because it makes me sleepy.    Cannot take NSAIDs because of the GI side effects. Any suggestions on how to deal? TIA ...

Please Pray For My KneeNov 30, 2016
Two years ago, I tore my medial meniscus and was thankfully able to heal in a few months by using crutches and participating in physical therapy.  On Thanksgiving, I hurt my knee again.  There was no precipitating factor other than just walking inside the house.  What is concerning is that I am now having pain even when not putting any pressure on my leg.  Please pray that this heals.  My insurance does not pay for specialists (like an orthopedist) or any imaging studies ...

Injured Knee And No Money For DoctorOct 27, 2014
I got out of bed Saturday, and when I stepped down, there was sharp pain to my medial knee.  I cannot walk on it.  Thankfully, there is next to no pain when there is no pressure on it and it is not fully flexed or fully extended.  Medial meniscal tear and/or MCL tear?  I have leftover NSAIDs from a neck problem years ago and some old tramadol, which are helping.  On his way to borrow a walker from a friend, my husband passed a yard sale and noticed a pair of crutches. &n ...

Sports/overuse Knee Injuries?Oct 28, 2014
Hi, I've recently had a knee injury - something I've never had before, so I'm unfamiliar with what to expect.  Have any of you ever had a knee injury such as a sprain or ligament tear, and if so, what were your symptoms and how long did it take to heal?  Did it ever feel normal again?
