Knee arthritis. My knees are so stiff, when I get (sm)

Posted: Jan 16, 2014

up from a sitting position especially.  I have to stand there a minute to get moving.  Stairs are even hard.  What can I do to keep them bendable?  Is it better to keep bending and exercising them or trying not to?  I hate getting old.  I just hate it.  I'm feeling sorry for myself today.

You have to keep bending them - wheres_my_job

when you move your joints, it helps lubricate them. If you just sit there you will freeze up.

See a doctor or a nurse practitioner, or look around on Internet for exercise routines for arthritic knees.

I have found that long long walks really help. I found this out by accident. My knees were really bothering me, really stiff. But I wanted to go for a walk. I assumed when I got home, my knees would hurt, I would have a hard time going up stairs. No, exactly the opposite, my knees felt great, stairs were much easier.

Also, if you need to lose weight, try and lose weight. Extra weight is hard on knees.

Good luck. PS Unfortunately I fell on my knee shoveling snow - it was okay, not terrible pain, but then I slept for a long time because I had been sick/tired - I had terrible pain in my hip, I could barely put weight on it, then the pain moved into my thigh/top of knee cap. I went for a couple long walks, and it is getting much better. That's my experience anyway.

I am 36 and just found out I have hip arthritis - am taking glucosamine chondrointin

and am starting a daily exercise program. I hope it helps long term.

Good luck!

Well, today I just found out I can't do a leg lift on right side! - wheres_my_job

My right knee buckled on me when I was trying to go up a steep bus step...I had been walking a lot in the cold and slush, and my knee just wouldn't support my weight. So I managed to get up the step...

Then today, I thought I would do some leg lifts - I've been walking, and my legs haven't been hurting. So I tried to raise my right leg - I could barely lift it from the hip. Okay, I think we've found the problem....

I've heard good things about glucosamine chondroitin, and also that it isn't effective...don't know what to think. Maybe I should try it, although I think it's a bit expensive...

I'm just going to try and do leg lefts and build my strength back up...my left leg is fine, no problem at all.

Damn falling on my knee from shoveling snow! But the problem is apparently in my hip.....

I can only speak for myself, but I am 59 years old and was feeling very creaky and miserable, very overweight. Just like you, I had to stay in one spot for awhile before starting to move after sitting. With age 60 just around the corner, I decided to join a gym. I got a trainer and started working out just 2 times per week, now up to 3 times. (Dropped to 1 day with the trainer, it's expensive!). Lots of weight training, concentrating on core and legs. I cannot tell you in just 12 weeks how much better I feel. You need to build up those areas around your knees, quads, also core, and I am sure your knees will feel way better. Mine sure do. Hard work but so worth it. I do the elliptical machine for cardio until the weather gets better, then will move outside. Short answer, get moving!!

My doc said the same thing - sm

Exercise the muscles that support the knee, especially all around the thigh. I still have problems though. In the winter, snowshoeing helps immensely--picking up the legs to clear the snow while the showshoe keeps the leg stable. I wish I could find an exercise as helpful for the times where there isn't any snow. I cannot do squats as they are too painful.

You are not alone! I too have the same issues. - kshel

I HAVE to get up and stretch, I mean just a few stretches every 30 to 45 minutes every day or it will get worse, at least for me it does. I have tried everything I promise you. And I am a fidgety person anyway so I make that work for me. While I sit typing, I will think of different muscles, like tightening up my calves, upper arms, and ABDOMEN! Ha, that is a big one. You wouldn't believe how much difference I have noticed in muscle tone over a long period of time. It is so true that, if you don't use it, you will lose it for sure. Good luck to you. I also take mood stabilizers. What a job that gives so much....(yeah right):-)

Had the same problem - Going gluten free stopped it

[ In Reply To ..]
I went gluten free for other reasons, but the "arthritis" I had for decades just stopped almost overnight. No more stiffness , pain, or swelling.

Not suggesting you try this, of course, but just mentioning it because I don't feel old anymore. It is kind of nice.

Google anti-inflammatory diet - SM

I stopped eating gluten and other inflammatory foods like dairy, nuts, nightshades and eggs. When I tried eating eggs recently, my achy joints started acting up. So now I avoid those foods and feel much better. Lots of information out there. Good luck!

Arthritis Pain In KneesNov 22, 2010
I was diagnosed with arthritis in my right knee in January and I cannot believe how fast it is progressing.  I now have it in both knees.  Transcribing makes it really ache because of the foot pedal.  I take Vicodin but some days that doesn't help and sometimes it makes me very sleepy.  Does anyone know of anything else I can try?  This is really affecting my ability to get my line counts and therefore my income.  Thanks! ...

Stiff Neck - SmJan 27, 2010
Have had a stiff neck for 3 days. Started on the right side, now on both sides. Hurts to turn in either direction. Tried heat, rubs, ibuprofen, but as soon as the ibuprofen starts to wear off it returns. Last night I sat up in a recliner and without moving my neck, my right neck up to my ear and down to my collar bone hurt. This morning it is just on both sides. I am going to take a few more ibuprofens, lay down, and then will check back here later. No fevers, no chills, no trauma, do not ...

! ObamaCare's Stiff PenaltiesMar 22, 2010
WOW, HAVE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE BEEN HAD!! According to the CBO (Congressional Budget Office) estimates, ObamaCare policy will cost approximately $12,000 to $15,000 per year for a family and about $4500 to $5000 per year for a single person.  (posted that one yesterday, including link)  This is an INCREASE BTW over what most people pay currently.  If you purchase a policy in good faith believing that it meets govt. requirements, if the govt. deems that it DOES NOT meet their requi ...

Stiff Joints. Sometimes Painful, Sometimes Not.Apr 15, 2012
I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem.  Sometimes my finger joints, knees, wrists, and ankles get so stiff that I cannot move them unless I pop them.  Sometimes they hurt extremely bad until I pop them, sometimes no pain, and sometimes they just won't pop.  This is something that I have been dealing with for as long as I can remember, so it isn't something that has been caused by the sitting from doing MT or anything like that.  I have had one doctor ...

My Lab Mix Is Seriously Ill Today Because I Overdosed Him On Arthritis MedMay 08, 2011
I must have been distracted when the vet told me I had to get my dog blood tests every 6 months if he stayed on his arthritis meds. I thought he had poisoned himself eating something out in the yard, but the vet thinks it's the medicine. I was supposed to give him half a pill and for the past several days I've been giving him a whole pill, because I thought he needed it. It can cause stomach ulcers, which in his case are causing acute vomiting and diarrhea. Earlier today I saw way too ...

Minor Question - Finger ArthritisDec 19, 2016
In the grand scheme of things this is a very paltry question, but it's new to me, so would like to hear about any tips or fixes. I'm in my 60s but have never had arthritis, no pains anywhere, even with doing MT for 30 years. I do have the Heberden's nodes on a couple fingers, but again, no pain associated with them.  But one night 2 weeks ago, I got off work and realized my left ring finger was swollen and stiff at the PIP joint. My wedding ring, which I've always been a ...

Noisy KneesMar 19, 2013
Quite suddenly about a year and a half ago my knees started with this awful crackly noise when I bend them.  No injury or anything.  Since then it has become much worse.  I haven't been to the doctor about it because they don't hurt.  I'm thinking about taking some Osteo-Bi-Flex to see if that helps.  It's expensive though.  Anybody have any experience taking this stuff, and does it work?  ...

For Those Of You With Various Health Issues, Including Fibromyalgia, Arthritis, EtcNov 01, 2013
As an older MT, I started suffering from "aches and pains" as well as some other health issues.  I had been taking 8-12 Tylenol a day and didn't like that idea, because of potential liver damage.  My doctor subsequently put me on tramadol because of the pain issues and I had been taking 1-2 of those a day. I had been talking to a couple of friends of mine who knew of my health issues and they suggested that I try a relatively new nutritional supplement.  I decided to give it ...

Question About End Stage OA In Both Knees (sm)Feb 21, 2016
I have bone-on-bone osteoarthritis of both knees.  I need to lose weight before they will do a replacement.  I am 69.  My calves hurt when I walk, not just the knees.  They seem very stiff.  Is this a result of the OA or is it probably something else? ...

Knee InjectionsOct 21, 2009
Have you ever had Synvisc, Euflexxa, Hyalgan, or Supartz injections?  Did they help?  I've Googled it and have read yays and nays.  My doctor suggested I try a series of Euflexxa.  I've had many cortisone shots, but my doctor said cortisone actually makes the cartilage weaker (and I have thinning cartilage), so he doesn't want to do anymore of those, which I hate because they are like a miracle cure! (at least for a few weeks to a couple of months).  Thank ...

Knee ProblemsDec 11, 2012
First let me start by saying that I have had two arthroscopies on my right knee and one on my left for basically worn out cartilage and some "fraying" around the edges of the knee cartilage, but never an outright tear (according to MRI studies all three times).  My knee problems have always started out first with pain, achy-type feeling, stiffness, and a tight band-like feeling around my knee, sometimes hurting on the outer back of my knee (I know I have a Baker's cyst in both knees, b ...

Knee ArthroscopyFeb 12, 2013
I had a knee arthroscopy February 1. I've had arthroscopic surgery before, but these incisions look different this time. There are two incisions about mid-knee, right and left sides of knee, that look like typical sutures tied with a knot, but below these two are smaller incisions with what appears to be a strand of suture running lengthwise across the incisions. Has anyone ever seen or heard about an arthroscopic surgery with sutures like this? I'm a big chicken with a very low pain ...

Knee PainJun 20, 2013
Have been told by orthopod that I have bone-on-bone in my right knee.  He suggested surgery and gave me Tramadol for the pain.  Surgery is not an option financially at this time.  I have been losing weight in order to take some of  the pressure off.  I cannot take the Tramadol and work because it makes me sleepy.    Cannot take NSAIDs because of the GI side effects. Any suggestions on how to deal? TIA ...

Please Pray For My KneeNov 30, 2016
Two years ago, I tore my medial meniscus and was thankfully able to heal in a few months by using crutches and participating in physical therapy.  On Thanksgiving, I hurt my knee again.  There was no precipitating factor other than just walking inside the house.  What is concerning is that I am now having pain even when not putting any pressure on my leg.  Please pray that this heals.  My insurance does not pay for specialists (like an orthopedist) or any imaging studies ...

Knee Swollen, Tight, PainfulOct 18, 2009
Have been having trouble with my knee since about spring of this year.  I had a knee scope ten years ago for some torn cartilage, and the knee did great for the ten years following, but flared up this past spring.  It gets a very tight and full feeling with a big bulge in the back of the knee, and I keep telling the doctor I believe it is a Baker's cyst, but he doesn't suggest anything for it.  He did tell me that is where the fluid goes because it has no place else to g ...

Injured Knee And No Money For DoctorOct 27, 2014
I got out of bed Saturday, and when I stepped down, there was sharp pain to my medial knee.  I cannot walk on it.  Thankfully, there is next to no pain when there is no pressure on it and it is not fully flexed or fully extended.  Medial meniscal tear and/or MCL tear?  I have leftover NSAIDs from a neck problem years ago and some old tramadol, which are helping.  On his way to borrow a walker from a friend, my husband passed a yard sale and noticed a pair of crutches. &n ...
