Thankful for my health but can't help but be depressed...
Posted: Dec 19, 2011
I must say after doing some reports where people are not near as healthy as I am I am thankful for that. I can't help but be depressed though because Christmas this year is not much at my house. My husband lost his job in October and got another one in November (thankful for that) but it is only part time. He may go a week without any work or work everyday some weeks. But mostly he hasn't got to work much. We are doing all we can to keep our heads above water much less buy Christmas. When you have a 13-year-old its hard cause they resent not having the money to buy all the things they would like. He's still gonna have things but he is spoiled and wants more than we can do.
I see relatives shopping till they drop, sisters-in-law, and it depresses me cause I haven't even got to hardly buy anything because I am so broke. One sister-in-law has been posting pics of their Christmas vacation to Gatlinburg, TN to the mountains. It is so beautiful! I'm so glad they are able to go but I sometimes think why do I have to be BROKE. I would just be happy being able to buy my Christmas nevermind a vacation. I will be fine, and I am better off than some people. At least I have a home and food with electricity but it just gets you down sometimes when you think about it. ;

I know the feeling. I am single and have no one I really NEED to buy for Christmas, but would like to get my great-nieces and nephews something. I have no insurance right now as I just started my THIRD MT job for the year and have a large clinic bill and have trouble paying in part of the bill each month. Just went to a discount store for the tune of $56 for things that are really necessities. That sux for being a single person. Can't fathom what others might be going through and have families to support. And I have only a few years to possible retirement, but retire on what? Even the money my deceased husband left me in annuities, etc is dwindling fast (I know he would have had no clue what would happen with his money, he thought he had me set for many years. And I hear that my nieces and nephews are buying all kinds of things and new houses and spend big bucks on stuff for their kids and I am just amazed they have the money to do it. My 90yo mother laying in a bed in a nursing home paralyzed, with only income of my dad's retirement and a few annuities, had more of a taxable income than me last year, that really sux too. And the money she made will not get her 4 months in a nursing home. That scares me too, I have no kids and what to do when I am nursing home material. Never thought we would have to live like this.

I remember my mom saying more than once "There's no shame in being poor, but it's no fun either." I know how you feel. Some say you should not focus on money, but the lack of it causes tremendous stress, and yes, depression. I hope things turn around for your family, and I am wishing you the best.

I am only able to give a small gift to my niece and nephew this year, no one else. Thank goodness I have a smaller family. I refuse to feel bad about it though. The facts are the facts, I simply cannot afford to buy gifts for everyone and pay my mortgage and bills too. Thankfully, the rest of my family understands and have no problem with it.
As to the 13-year-old, now is as good a time as any for him to begin to understand that life is not all about "things," especially in this economy. Children all over this nation had to learn that lesson in the 1930s during the Depression. Trust me, this economy isn't going to get any better any time soon.
For me, the lesson in this economy is learning that life is about what we put into it helping our fellow men/women/children and learning to get by on what we have and not be caught up in the buying frenzy that this country has been on for the past 20 years. Also, I've learned to be grateful for family and friends who I know will stick by me through thick and thin. That, to me, is the true meaning of Christmas.
So, keep it simple, and hopefully your son/children will begin to appreciate the sacrifice that is made for what they do receive. It doesn't have to be a doom and gloom situation; it's all in the presentation.
I'm not speaking from some lofty, "safe" place either. I may very well lose my home in the next year, the home I could easily afford 8-9 years ago when I purchased it. I'm single and have no 2nd income, period. However, I know my friends and family will help if they can, just as I would them if the situation were reversed.
Family and friends are what is truly important.

Anyone Else Depressed About Getting Old?May 12, 2011I'm talking the physical signs. I've been steadily gaining weight since mid 30s, my arm and shoulder skin is starting to sag, and all the fat is accumulating in my midsection. My butt has lost its shape, I have grayish skin and spider veins. The skin around my eyes is loose, my skin is pale and pasty looking, hair is fading to an unhealthy color, lips are thinning out, and I look like a corpse with makeup on. Sometimes I don't even feel like bothering with ...
Depressed Mar 03, 2013I posted before about my stepdad taking back a couple Christmas gifts previously.
Well there was a family dispute between my husband and my stepdad. I think my stepdad is evil. He lies constantly. He tells my mom lies about us that are not true and she believes him. After my stepdad and husband got into an altercation my mom said this will not change our relationship; I will still come to visit you and call you. That has not been the case though. My birthday came and went and no phone ...
Soo DepressedJun 02, 2013I'm so depressed, it's literally almost unbearable at times. I have to find a way out of this. I've tried most antidepressants over the years, and the side effects make it just not worth it to me to take them. A couple of the OTC medications are pretty good, but with the same side effects of ankle swelling, hair loss, weight gain, and insomnia. I've been off everything for about two years, except I'm still hooked on Ambien, which I've weaned down to about 3 mg ...
So DepressedOct 25, 2014I am in the depths of a major depressive episode (part of my bipolar disorder). This job doesn't help with that except to make it worse. I am partially retired, but due to financial constraints, can't fully retire for another 4 years. I just don't think I can make it that long. I'm under a psychiatrist's care, and I'm thinking maybe an increase in my meds or changing them altogether might be in order. Does anybody have any suggestions?& ...
Depressed HusbandApr 17, 2012I have been married for 25 years and together we have two wonderful, grown kids, 20 and 22 who are still living at home. No problem with that.
My husband has major depression which is usually (okay, about 50%) under fairly good control. He's on a couple of meds, which I'm not sure are still working right, but what little health insurance we have doesn't cover either mental health services or medications, so he's very resistant to going to a psychiatrist to get th ...
Job Burn Out Or DepressedApr 12, 2014I have been a medical transcriptionist for 16 years. For the past 8 years I have been doing children's psychiatry full time and working for MModal part time. I dread each job now and it's a struggle to stay focused each day...I hate hearing day in and day out the sexual/physical abuse most of the children are put though and then I come home after a full day of hearing that and then I'm stressed working for MM/MQ. Why I Wouldn't Be Entirely Depressed If Mr. Romney Did Win.Aug 27, 2012(And we're mostly women here, after all). This was Sunday on Fox News.
Mr. Romney: “With regards to women’s health care, look, I’m the guy that was able to get health care for all the women and men in my state,” Mitt Romney said in an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” before making sure to attack Obama’s law. “There’s talking about it at the federal level, we actually did something. And we did it without cutting Medicare and without raisi ...

Adjustment Disorder With Anxiety And Depressed Mood Jun 17, 2015is my (MT-related) dx after finally visiting a shrink last week. Very Thankful To GodJun 12, 2010Last night my niece and her 13-year-old daughter were on their way to a family member's high school graduation. My niece was in the passing lane and noticed that drivers in the right lane were weaving as if to avoid something. In a flash without warning a deer hit my niece's car. The front end of the car was completely demolished. With the impact the windshield broke and the hood of the car popped up. My niece was at that point unable to see anyt ...

Thankful President Obama Is Mar 25, 2012for part of the pipeline. Regardless of how he feels about continued use of oil for energy, he's gotta admit that it will at least put Americans to work....and God knows we need that. However, I still don't get why he talks about green energy and opposed this pipeline for the longest time before agreeing to it....when he funded off shore drilling in Brazil. I guess I don't get the double standard there. We give aid to Brazil for drilling and yet Obama seems ...

Health Insurance Is A Poor Measure Of Health Care.Sep 14, 2011On Tuesday, the Census Bureau released its annual report on health insurance coverage in the United States. News media widely misconstrued the data and presented the problems facing the nation's health care system through a distorted lens.
Many major news outlets made a basic error when reporting on the Census Bureau study. The Los Angeles Times wrote that "the number of Americans with no health insurance rose in 2010 to 49.9 million from 49 million the year before." But the figure c ...
I Know I Should Be Thankful, But Charity Kind Of Makes Me Feel Like Crap.Dec 20, 2011I'm a single mom trying to make ends meet. I live paycheck to paycheck. Here lately I've had money issues because of car problems that needed to be fixed, necessary wiring and plumbing repairs in my house, etc. I do good to get my bills paid and put food on the table. Health Care Reform-Question About Canadian Health CareDec 03, 2009So....a friend is for our US health care reform (already retired and on Medicare) because he had no trouble going to Canada to get laser surgery on his eyes so he wouldn't have to wear glasses and states there is nothing wrong with the Canadian system....but, and I'm asking a serious question here, how long do people really wait for emergent surgery if they belong to the Canadian system versus the American system as we have it now?
How did Canada get their health care system up and ru ...

Mental HealthJan 25, 2011This job can cause severe mental health problems. I've been working at home for 12 years and the isolation has taken its toll on me. Not Sure If This Is A Health Issue But...Nov 12, 2013I have a bra question.
I've recently learned that I have been wearing the wrong size bra for years (who hasn't unfortunately). I was sized at Victoria Secret and am a size 34DDD. I've always worn bigger size bras to fit the cups and had spillage and still had a gap in the band part, no matter the size or style, and now I know why they never fit properly. Well, VS has my size 34DDD (of course) in many styles but they are at least $50 for one bra and way out of my price range, n ...
Health Problems Being An MTSep 11, 2014I'm a relatively new MT and already I'm having a constant ache in my arm and shoulder. It's a strange sensation that I can't really describe. Never had problems physically before until I began being an MT. However, it didn't come on until about a year and a half of being an MT. For those who have been an MT for, say, 20 years, I don't know how you do it. You don't get health problems from working at McDonald's or Wal-Mart, I don't think. Typing 8 ...
