Things to be thankful for

Posted: Nov 24, 2010

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New claims for jobless benefits last week dropped to their lowest level in more than two years while consumer spending rose in October, pointing to a moderate strengthening in economic activity.

Yep, we should be thankful for that, and I am.... - sam

Thanks for posting the article sam. Good to know the whole story - see message

But an unexpected sharp drop in orders for long-lasting manufactured goods last month was a reminder that growth would remain sluggish, and already low inflation slowed further, supporting the Federal Reserve's November 3 decision to again loosen monetary policy.

I believe spending is up because of the holiday season coming up. Now if spending continues to rise throughout next year (Feb, March, April, etc - after the holidays have passed), and people start getting jobs, then I will be thankful. But increased spending around the holidays in my opinion does not mean the economy is on the rise.

I agree with you on that. - Backwards Typist

The holidays have a lot to do with both spending and jobs. I'll just wait and see what January/February brings in that perspective.

The seasonal workers will be laid off again, that's a known fact. Happens every year. Spending will also decrease because people, if they used credit cards, will be busy trying to pay off the cards ASAP.

Some people have to be the adults here and that is the republicans. When a child is bad the parents have to punish them. That is what this election showed. What I've seen since The O took office and we had a democrat ruled everything is that the insane children have been out of their minds and on a spending spree that they can't afford and don't have the funds for.

I'll take the party of no over the childish outrageous behavior of the democrats any day.

Correction to above: "Some" democrats. Not all are arrogant little children who don't know how to behave. Just some of them. There are some decent democrats in congress. Very few but there are some.
The same applies to Republicans - some okay, some spoiled - little children

You apparently aren't close friends with your Senators - How many houses does McCain have? nm
[ In Reply To ..]
Here ya go... - see message
[ In Reply To ..]
John McCain doesn't own any homes. Cindy McCain owns 7 homes. They belong to her, her dependent children and the trusts and companies they control. She purchased 7 homes with the funds she inherited from her parents who worked hard to build their fortune she inherited. Cindy is and always has been the controller of their family.

But if you want to go down that isle John Kerry owns 5 homes (at least 5 that I know of - total value together is 29 MILLION dollars.

Democrats seem to portray themselves as the "common man" who know what us everyday American's go through. They will claim that republicans don't know how we struggle each day and are out of touch with Americans, but the farthest is from the truth. In all my experience it's been the democrats who are out of touch and have no idea of the struggles we face everyday (Kerry, Clinton, Obama, Edwards, Pelosi, Kennedy's) to name a few.

BTW - the poster says "most" pubs I know are middle class". She/he didn't say every republican is middle class. There are many senators/politicians both republican AND democrat that own multiple houses. I think John Kerry owns the most (and most expensive of any senator I know of).

AND most of the republicans I know of ARE middle class.
John McCain is worth over 50 million - dollars
[ In Reply To ..]
It doesn't really matter whose name things are in.
So are a lot of democrats. What is your point? - see message
[ In Reply To ..]
First you asked how many houses John McCain owns. When replied with none (which is a fact - he doesn't own any), now you change it to how much money he's worth. Newsflash...John Kerry is worth 525 million.

Guess what...Kerry, Edwards, Kennedy's, Clinton's, Pelosi, Obama, Gore, and a lot of other democrats (and republicans) are rich too - worth many millions). So you're okay with democrats being rich but not republicans??? Can you please explain that one?

You also didn't get the point of the message....The poster said "most" pubs he/she knows are middle class. Ditto for me too.
The point is, John McCain. His houses are - in Cindy's name
[ In Reply To ..]
but they're still his houses.
No they are Cindy's, bought with her money - What part of that dont you understand?
[ In Reply To ..]
huh?
They are married. - ...
[ In Reply To ..]
And on top of that, they live in a community property state. The houses may be in Cindy's name, but they are John's also. What is there about that, that you don't understand?

P.S. Where did you find that they were all bought with "Cindy's money," not that it matters, but please share where you found that.
Yes, and Cindy bought them with her money from her inheritance - and John has his income.
[ In Reply To ..]
When something happens to Cindy the homes/trust goes to their children. What part of that don't you understand. And you know...it is not uncommon for married people to have separate home they purchase with their own money. My mom has the house we grew up in which is in her name and my dad has a house in his name that he rents out. They are both in their own names. If something happens to either of them the money goes to the children.

Here's a little background with links per your request (its a little long, but you did ask, so here ya go):

The McCains have a pre-nuptial agreement that separates their finances. The “homes” are mostly investment properties in Cindy McCain’s trust. Since John McCain has no involvement in his wife’s business affairs, he would have little knowledge of the assets in her portfolio.

Of course, a couple of these aren’t investment properties. Cindy bought a condo for their daughter, for instance, and she purchased another in La Jolla for an elderly aunt whom she supports. The McCains live primarily in a 6600-square-foot condo in Phoenix and a three-bedroom condo in Arlington when Congress is in session. They also have a Sedona ranch that again is part of Cindy’s portfolio.

No doubt, McCain’s clumsy answer gave Obama room to poke fun at him as rich and out of touch at the same time. However, McCain himself doesn’t own any property and isn’t “rich”, and Cindy and her family earned their money honestly. They certainly didn’t partner with a now-convicted political fixer to buy a house in a tony neighborhood.

http://hotair.com/archives/2008/08/21/how-many-houses-does-mccain-own-none/

Here's another article:

Don't forget, there is a pre nup. Any capital gains, dividends and wealth from properties would be kept separate and NOT be comingled funds and thus not community property. Cindy McCain undoubtedly has some of the best tax experts in Arizona working for her and apparently she takes their advice. This is no tax dodge. This is perfectly legal and is quite common when one of the partners has immense wealth and the other does not. Nothing is being concealed. It is her money and not his.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/don/americas-favorite_b_100923_12967568.html

And another:

When he is in Washington, he lives in a luxury high-rise condominium in Arlington, Va., owned by his wife, Cindy Hensley McCain. Cindy McCain also owns their condos in Phoenix, San Diego and Coronado, Calif., and their vacation compound near Sedona, Ariz. The beer business she inherited from her father — Hensley & Co. — is the source of the McCain family fortune.

But with the family's money in Cindy McCain's name, as dictated by a prenuptial agreement, the senator's finances are more difficult to assess and scrutinize than those of many other political candidates.

Husbands and wives of senators are subject to fewer disclosure requirements than their office-holding spouses. Cindy McCain, who files separate tax returns from her husband, also controls a privately held company and invests mainly through a web of limited-liability corporations and trusts that have few disclosure requirements.

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2008133552_mcwealth23.html

Okay, so what part of her money don't you understand. Yes they are married, yes he lives in her homes, but he makes his money and she makes hers. I don't understand what is so hard to understand about that.

But no mention of John Kerry's vast fortune which is five times more than John McCain's.

On top of that - who cares how much money they make. Very few senators in DC know the struggles of what the American people go through. None of them have to worry whether they will be able to feed or clothe their family.

Plus you are still ignoring the main message. The poster said "most" republicans she knows are middle class - WHICH IS TRUE! But you keep ignoring that fact and harping on John McCain's finances. WHO CARES about his finances, and if you're going to talk about a republicans wealth then you should include democrats like Clintons, Pelosi, Gore, Kerry, Feinstein, etc. All senators (both republican AND democrat) in DC are rich. Why do you think they try to hold onto their position so long. The wealth and power they amass are so great they don't care about us (except for a few who do care - both democrat AND republican).

But nice try at deflecting the main issue that got this thread to keep going...MOST republicans are middle class.

Have a nice holiday.
Ah ha! So, they claim only what is shown - as income
[ In Reply To ..]
So, depending on what the prenup says, we really don't know what houses belong to John. Guess since they are married, it makes no difference. We'll find out when they divorce.
According to investigators - they all belong to Cindy - Can't make that any more clear
[ In Reply To ..]
Oh yes, and John lives with Cindy in the houses/condos bought with her money.

Kinda simple and this topic is running dry.
So, you bring up the prenup and then want to ignore - it?
[ In Reply To ..]
Why? It suited you at first, and now it doesn't?

They tried to work on it immediately, trying to get the tax cuts to all remain.... - sam

in place for at least 3 years (and anybody, even the Democrats, should know you should NOT raise taxes in a down economy) and that went over like a lead balloon with the Democrats.

And if I am not mistaken, it was your fearless leader who promised millions of jobs. What happened to that by the way? He has had the job for 2 years and both houses of Congress in his majority. No "pubs" in his way then. What about that huge stimulus he added? Where are THOSE jobs?

You guys jumped all over us for not giving Obama time (he has had almost 2 years). The "pubs" only have the house, not the senate...and within 2 days they wanted to make necessary changes and who threw up roadblocks...the nonproducing Dems. about all the Dems have done is spend, spend, spend, spend, spend....and spend.

So, what are you saying? That they are Working on - creating jobs

as they said they would? They promised to work on creating jobs. Your leader, Obama has the right idea. The pubs just want to get into office and obstruct. By the way, if you find a pub is working on creating jobs, please let us know.
