Opinions - is drawing/paiting something that can be learned

Posted: May 29, 2014

I don't know the word for it when someone can do something and it comes natural to them.  My mom and dad could draw/paint anything they wanted to.  I cannot, but I would like to.

Would like your opinions if you think drawing is something you can learn or a talent you are born with (think talent is the word I was looking for).

Just wondering if it's worth it to try and learn or will I just be wasting my time and stuck with the idea that all I'll be able to draw is stick men/hangman level.

;

My cousin teaches art and he says anyone can - learn. I wonder sometimes, though

If you're in the New York City area, he teaches a painting class in Central Park for New York University.

He says anyone can paint. I wonder though, because there has to be some sort of creativity that goes along with that. I'm like you - my grandmother was a very, very fine artist, my sister is an amazing graphic artist and I just flat out did not get that creative gene. At. All.

You should try taking a painting class - I remember when my sister was in school studying art, she said that some of her classes made her see that painting is really about the lines and you learn to dissect a picture into the lines that make it up. You might find that you're better at it than you think you'll be and even if you think you're just crap, you'll have a good time and meet new people, so it's a win/win either way.

Talents - see msg

I do believe one needs to be talented in something like that to be "good," but I still think it would be an interesting class to take if you can afford it and you think you could have some personal benefit (not financial, just personally).

I see it this way. One can go to mechanics school, but it doesn't mean he could fix a piece of machinery good. I think that's talent. Same with singing. I can go to voice lessons, but I'll never have a lovely voice.

My other examples include this: All us kids (4 of us) took piano lessons. Two of the 4 siblings play beautifully. I and my other sibling can just can play.We know the notes, but what comes out is not near as beautiful as my other siblings. I don't ever regret taking piano lessons. In fact, it gave me the foundation for learning to type fast---it's the same brain-to-finger coordination mechanism as looking at sheet music and playing them on the piano keyboard.

I think cooking is another one. My husband is a gourmet cook, by his own talent and playing around. He can tell me all the ingredients in a dish, but when I make it, it doesn't come out tasting as good. It's good, but not spectacular like his is.

Nothing can be hurt by you taking the class.

Yes it is worth it - wanna raze

I started painting and taking classes at age 30 and now at 39 I paint like a natural. I've even sold some of my art. It's a skill that can be learned. Yes you won't be a Davinci or Michaelangelo but you will be proud of your work. Trust me. Find a good teacher and classes.

Talent and lack of it. - nn

Yes, people are "born with" artistic, musical, and literary talents and others aren't, but regardless which category you fit into (talented or not) you can certainly benefit from the guidance and discipline instruction provides.

IMO, try it. - Please sm

I took a class through my local Parks and Recs and really enjoyed it. At the end was very surprised at how well my final project turned out. While I do believe it can be learned, *you* may have a hidden talent and just need to learn a few techniques to turn on that creative light bulb in your brain.

Feel Sad Because I Just Learned That A ManJul 28, 2016
I respected very much had an affair.  I know him through my church and always considered him to be the epitomy of ethical, moral, etc.  He was one of a handful of people I considered the spiritual center of our church.  I don't know how to square what happened with what I thought I knew about him.  I dread having to see him and his wife again because I don't think I'll be able to act natural.  It is a very small congregation, so avoiding them won't be ...

Did you all know that women are not equal to men under the law on a Federal level?  As in, there is no constitutional gurantee of our rights as citizens of the US?  As in, any rights that we do currently have at the fed/state level can easily be rescinded because there is no constitutional guarantee of protection? I had no clue and I'm pretty p.o'd!! ...

I Need Some OpinionsDec 31, 2009
I have a friend I just connected with who lives across the country.  She lived next door to me.  We grew up together, played together, and went to school together.  Went to her wedding and then she moved and I lost touch.  Anyway (sorry to get side tracked, that has nothing to do with my post).  Anyway…when I told her what I do (MT), she told me her daughter took 3 classes but couldn’t afford to finish the training, and asked me my opinions of the MT field a ...

I have had a lot of problems with my breasts over the years, have had 3 biopsies in the left and 1 in the right but thank God they have all be negative.  However, over the last several weeks I have been experiencing something different, pain and burning in my right breast along with swelling (not a lot but enough for me to notice).  I have performed self-examinations and other than exquisite tenderness throughout the breast I cannot find any masses (I actually do have a 6 mm nodul ...

Opinions - Is He Just Not That Into Me - Or Something Else? SmMay 17, 2010
Ok... so I met this guy about a month ago - I am the one going out with a guy almost 11 years younger.  He's a very nice guy! Every time I see him he is nice and we talk literally for hours.  He told me off the bat he is not much of a phone person so he doesn't call much, but he sends a few texts every day.  At first he wanted to see me several days a week... one of my friends called him my "boyfriend" though and I think it freaked him out. He had told me he was definite ...

I Could Use Some Opinions Jun 25, 2010
Hey everyone, this is my first time posting on this board, but I thought I'd see if I could get some input. My ex husband met this woman and moved her in with him after only knowing her for 1-1/2 months. I wasn't real thrilled with the idea because we have two kids and joint custody, so they spend half their time at their dad's. Honestly, I was feeling a little jealous about some other woman spending time with my kids. I met her and she seemed nice, so I got used to the idea and ...

So, my daughter, who is 9, had all sorts of ear problems, stayed on antibiotics and had to get tubes, whcih stayed in for only 3 weeks and I opted not to get the procedure again.  She finally grew out of it.  My son, he is 13 and never had ear problems.  A month ago though he got a case of Sterp and ended up with a ruptured eardrum.  The doctor told me to take him to ENT to make sure the ear perforation healed after the one round of antibiotics.  Took him to ENT and it h ...

Opinions, PleaseMay 26, 2013
Hi all, What do you think about people who pray for, what I term, silly things? Like what color drapes to buy, what shoes to wear that day, etc. I find it rather silly because people have to take controls over their own lives. I do not believe in "handing everything over" to the higher power. Our higher power (who I term God) gave us brains and will and power to make decisions. I don't call this an abuse of prayer, I just don't understand why some people can't think for themsel ...

Things About The Healthcare Bill That I Learned Last Night ... (sm)Mar 26, 2010
Okay, one thing that I learned that did not have to do with the healthcare reform but instead has to do with the TARP is that over 450 billion dollars have been given to something like 13 districts that DO NOT EXIST!!!  Okay, so where exactly is this money?  Regarding the healthcare bill, I watched as a young man who had obviously taken the time to read the 2700 pages of the bill confront senators about portions of the bill.  It was shocking to see exactly how little these people ...

Opinions From Cat PeopleJan 03, 2012
I need a serious opinion.  We have friends who have 2 cats, full-breed, who they have had daily bonding with for a good 2 years.  Said friends are going on a 3-month trip out of the country and are boarding the cats here in the states.  The one cat (before owners have even left) is showing signs of something isn't right--getting out of the house and not duly returning home, peeing smack dab on top of the bed.).   These cats are brother and sister, and will be somewh ...

Need Opinions/help What To Do About A PuppyNov 18, 2009
We had a black lab puppy show up at our house about 12 days ago.  I have drove around looking for signs for a missing dog (small community) and nothing.   I have been feeding this little angel because I CANNOT starve a dog no matter who it might belong to. Need Opinions Please About School (sm)Jan 24, 2011
I am currently looking into returning to school like so many other MTs out there.  There are programs where you can get an Associates Degree in Healthcare Management (basically medical records), which I am really not interested in because, as I see it, most hospitals are trying to cut down their medical records departments to as slim of staff as possible, plus with the integration of EMR, I just do not see this being a lucrative field.  IF, big big IF here, I were to enter into this pr ...
