This makes me insane! Just learned an acquaintance of ours

Posted: Aug 29, 2010

was recently approved for SSI after a 3 year wait - it was her lucky day because she got her benefits RETROACTIVELY and cleared over $20,000! she promptly bought each of her 3 daughters used cars and spent the rest on a 2 week family trip to Disney World (that cost $10,000 she proudly told us). I am STUNNED! Plus, she got word that she finally got into a public housing apartment that costs her $180 a month! Wait - this includes all utilities including garbage and sewer....I and so many of my coworkers are working 2 and 3 jobs just to pay the bills - we didn't have a vacation this summer except for a 24 hour trip up to the lake (to stay in my mother's trailer at a marina) - my daughter has to wait 2 weeks after school starts to get any new clothes/shoes for school cause I don't get paid until then.  I have a pretty good life but work **** hard for it while these clowns sit back, get paid for NOTHING and go on government-paid trips to Disney World....it really disgusts me - just had to vent....

While I can understand this one being a real jab in the craw, as they say in the south, many people do need disability.

It is ones like this that make it hard to swallow when you are working so hard. I have been on disability, not SSI, but from my working monies, which is like early paid social security benefits, but now I am trying to go back to work if I can. The sad part is this. If I had not had a working history to pay me out from, and had gotten the federal welfare type one which is SSI, I would have gotten more help from the state payout, but since I had worked I did not qualify for the stuff the state gives out on top of SSI.

Go figure huh? Had to wait a whole year more to get Medicare and then had a spend down on my health and did not even qualify for food stamps. Never did make any sense to me I tell ya.

So please know that many do need disability and the takers make it sad for us all.

But she better watch out cause I know they do pay people from the Labor and Industries to go out and spy on people to make sure they are really disabled.

Not sure if the feds ever do this but who knows.

Just my thoughts on this but I sure do see where you are coming from. I have not had money for vacation in a long, long time, even though my husband now has worked his butt off. Was on disability when I met him he is a wonderful man.

so, what kind of disability does this person have? - n/m

Again - I have witnessed abuse of the system in many ways by people I have known - i am trying not to generalize, just basing my comments/observations on my personal experience. I don't want to judge, but I KNOW this person well and I know her habits and what she says to me about how she has beat the system for so long - I got a little angry at her blatant abuse of the system.

This is the problem with our country right now. We complain that nobody produces, yet reward those who don't, all the while with the attitude that it is nobody's business how someone spends our money, and yes, it is our money. I have a renter who is on a medical retirement from the military who is lazy, has failed out of nursing school, so he can no longer receive his GI bill benefits, is on welfare and has decided not to pay half of this month's rent because I "have more money than he has." Meanwhile, he does not pay even close to the mortgage in rent (when he does pay), has only once paid his rent before the 10th and has taken four vacations this year. I have taken one vacation in the past six years. Oh, and he has 5 horses. I have horses, too, but I pay my bills with money that I earn. And, yes, he will be moving this month. I just pray he doesn't trash my house. I absolutely agree that nobody should be allowed to take a publicly funded Disney World trip and it absolutely is your business because it is, in essence, your money. I also do not think that people should be allowed to buy lobster with food stamps (I have seen it done) and I think that it IS my business. It is blatant abuse and should be disallowed. What is to encourage people to work and be productive members of society when we enable people to not work and feel that they have a right to have as much as someone who does (sometimes even more)? Am I jealous that I can't afford a Disney World trip? Heck yeah! Do I think it's wrong that a person who does not work should be able to take one on public money? Heck yeah! Okay, I am done with my rant.

I can see getting disability for clinical depression that makes a person unable to function, but obviously she can function if she went on a shopping spree & took a family vacation.

So in other words, her depression was alleviated by hitting the lotto & not having to work. So what else is new? I can say that about 90% of the people I know, myself included. It doesn't warrant getting paid not to work. We get upset when politicians abuse public funds. I don't see much difference here. SSDI is the insurance program, but SSI "is a Federal income supplement program funded by general tax revenues (not Social Security taxes)." Not sure which one OP's friend is getting, but there are reasons for being outraged about potential abuse of either one.

The house across the street from mine is now a rental filled with low-lifes who are all on disability. There's nothing wrong with any of them; they were just lucky enough to find some quack who was willing to sign off on their "disability." They sit in the lovely sunshine drinking beer & smoking all day while I'm inside banging away on my keyboard, & every time I see them I want to puke. Do I think everyone on disability is faking? OF COURSE NOT. But I have seen enough handicapped placards on cars driven by people who get out of the car & skip to their destination to be more than a little suspicious.

Did they pay in? Maybe. Depends if it's SSDI or SSI. One's insurance, the other is paid out of general tax revenues. Either way, last time I checked, Social Security is only projected to be solvent until something like 2035. People faking illnesses and disabilities are only draining the system that much faster, & that system isn't going to be there for people who truly deserve it.

I can see both sides - jealous much?

[ In Reply To ..]
How this other person spends money received for having a DISABILITY is really none of your business. So what if she "blew" the money? She may wish she hadn't later in life, or maybe these things enriched whatever time she has left and is willing to live w/o having saved that money.

I'm left scratching my head at your attitude about these "clowns." Really? Clowns? Well, bless you for working 2-3 jobs, but I wonder...are you saying you would trade your good health and not having to work so much so you could be a "clown" with a disability that keeps you from working? Or would you rather she "fix" her disability and not receive the benefit of having paid into the system for whatever term she did.

Frankly, I'd be singing praises about my good health and trying to remember that this person is only getting out of the system what she WORKED to put into it before she became DISABLED. You are only looking at the outward appearance and not what this person lives with every day.

BTW, I have a cousin who has been disabled since his 30s. This year he finally was awarded his SSI with arrearage. Hats off to him, because there is no amount of money that will restore him to health, take away his daily pain, return his quality of life. Whatever he choses to do with the money is his business.

the DISABLED component of SSI does not seem to be on the radar in the original post. Three years, huh? Wonder what her life was like for those 1000+ days?

Terminal illness is a distinct possibility. They do not hand out this money for hangnails. Maybe desertfox would learn how to count her blessings if she did a little bedtime reading. I would suggest she take a look through the SSA Blue Book to see what she is missing.

was approved for SSI in April. For him I am eternall grateful for our system. I have typed so many reports over the years on people who DO abuse the system that perhaps I am jaded. I am not in the best of health but I have worked since I was 16 and will work for at least 20 more years if I can. This person has "played" the system for all she is worth for as long as I have known her when she is physically able to work and in fact has had decent jobs in the past but she has a drinking problem as well and I have gotten frustrated watching her over the years I suppose.

So many people assume that someone who gets assistance is just lazy. They get jealous and petty.

I had a psychologist dictate for 16 minutes today about how she was going to get a mentally ill veteran's benefits taken away and make him work. It was pure jealousy! Anyone who is a real psychologist would know that this guy -- who suffers from hallucinations among other things -- cannot hold down a proper job, but she ranted on and on about "people like ME do not get $600 free dollars a month." It's insane what people do when they get jealous of money. Absolutely insane. OP needs to get a grip.

SSI retro pay - hardworkingMTgirl

[ In Reply To ..]
Actually, the money your friend got was hers to do with as she pleases because she spent her own earned money or her family's money when she should have been receiving benefits. I think I would rather work hard for my money than to be disabled enough to draw SSI. (I thank God everyday that I don't depend on the government as support.)

What should she do with the money? It's probably her only type of windfall for the rest of her life. I think I might have done the same thing.

Maybe she COULD have used the money for housing instead of using public housing, but it will make no difference to the taxpayers one way or another. The government wastes more money per second that she'll get in a lifetime. Don't begrudge people on SSI. Usually they are basically poor most of their lives. I know it's hard for you to relate, but you really are the one who is better off. Also, some people on SSI are allowed to do part time work and get a bit of extra pay. Living on SSI is sort of "existing." The pay isn't that much.

I am someone who was born with "slight cerebral palsy." While straight typing has never really worn on me physically, I am now in my middle 50s and with the advent of VR, I am finding it hard to make the lph requirements of many MTSOs -- its not bad if it is just basically reading through the report and doing minor editing, but the account that I am on is "basically being trained and right now, I am literally screaming in pain because of the fact that in my mid 50s, I am feeling the arthritis. My family and friends have stated that "yes, I have a disability and that I have had it from birth, right now as I am typing, I am feeling my fingers tingle etc and I have had problems walking for the past two days, because of pain in my right foot which is the side affected by my cerebral palsy. That includes having to walk up and downstairs.

What most people do not understand (and I worked as a legal secretary many years ago as well as doing MT), is the whole process takes MANY years. Your friend probably had to pay out of pocket or with insurance for many of the evaluations she went through and seeing NUMEROUS doctors. In my case, if I broke my left arm or leg, I would "be up the creek without the paddle." I have in the past 2-3 years broken my right ankle and fractured my pelvis, both times of which, I explained to the docs, while giving my history that I was born with CP -- I was given information to follow up with orthopedic surgeons, but since my insurance is through the military, not many providers in my area (Miami), would accept the insurance. I am planning on pursuing disability however, because of the fact that in my current living situation, I have a series of steps to ascend and descend to do my laundry (a total of 26 plus walking to the laundry room in my current situation) as well as having to walk outside in the Florida weather which right now is a lot of rain and when it rains here, it is like ice. I am planning on moving (hopefully next week), where I have an elevator in the building and being just around the corner from the laundry facilities as well as being able to be out of the rain.

I will be 55 in October, technically eligible then for "senior housing" -- Believe me, I will be taking advantage of anything that I can get in the way of assistance since I have worked since the age of 16 and paid into the system as well.

There are people on these boards whom are so "judgmental" and really have NO clue of everything that is entailed in life. Instead of feeling bitter, I would suggest being happy for this friend. As an aside, my mother had 2 brain tumors; the first when I was 4 years old in 1959 and the second was diagnosed shortly after my sister was born in 1962. She lost the sight in her right eye and had to wear an eyepatch with kids referring to her as a "pirate" When those responses came through, she would get down to a child level and explain that she had a sore eye and had to wear a bandage just like they did with a skinned elbow or knee. Because of her tumor, my mother had significant impairments. She however, was DETERMINED to live a "normal life." She drove and BOY did she!!! She ministered to prisoners at Stateville Prison, she drove to Woodfield Mall (suburban Chicago)!!! She played bridge, was very active in our community, was president of the our local churches womens society and very well loved. When I returned to work at our local hospital after her death, I had many of the doctors who had taken care of her over the years, come up and hug me and crying because she had put up that fight.

The last words before my mother lapsed into her final coma were "_____ (insert name) your voice is a gift from God and you need to use it." Well, in my earlier years, I sang, but now, I am heeding my mother's words and using my "voice elsewhere."

The MAIN reason we now have a "homeless population" is because of the fact that the states have now said "no more mental health facilities, i.e., institutions. We have a healthcare system, which I have seen with my own eyes through the death of my late husband and the VA, that has been crap for years. He served in the miilary for over 20 years; however, when he died, the original diangosis was changed from "civilian doc" to "VA doc."

I could go on but I won't -- the last thing I will say however, is unless you are willing to walk in that person's shoes, do not be quick to be so judgmental. Extreme Makeover Home Edition happens to be one of my favorite shows and I am not bitter because these families are getting a gorgeous home. I am seriously thinking of volunteering if I can and if it only means "small stuff," at least I have made a difference.

I don't blame you for being upset. Since she is getting SSI and I assume SSD, then she gets more benefits than a regular social security disability recipient. SSI recipients are eligible for low income housing and home health care as well as Medicaid with their medicare etc. SSI which is a supplement to SSD is given to those whose SSD is not of a substantial amount that fits the government guidelines of a livable wage. Most folks who get SSI haven't worked or worked much at all. I have a horrendous chronic disease which causes me only to be able to work about 10 hours a week now and you would have thought the government was giving me welfare when I applied for my benefits in 1998. Because of my illness I got them right away though. Also, I don't know about SSI but SSD you can only draw a maximum of 12 months "back pay" no matter how long it takes you to get your benefits. SSI must be different if she got 20K in back pay. I had a friend who was on SSI because she only got 400 a month in SSD. This made her eligible for medicaid etc which qualified her to have a person come in 5 days a week to cook, clean nad run errands! I wish I could have had a benefit like that. I am still not able to work as much and I did way back but I am grateful I am doing as well as I am even though I will never be 100% again. This person taking advantage makes me sick to my stomach also.

I have a neighbor who got SSD pay retroactive - sm - ECMT

from the time of her car accident that left her unable to work now. This was 2 years after the fact. They denied her claim and then they got the lawyers involved. The accident was her fault (turned out of our road in front of a passing truck being driving by an off-duty cop), he T-boned her big time (he was not hurt). She had a brain injury, now has short-term memory loss, dizziness, etc. She is not allowed to drive anymore as well and moves really slow now whereas before she was very fast, active (small and very thin). The judge could not believe they denied her so he made it retroactive from the day of the accident so they got a nice lump payment for the first payment. They had plenty of medical records to back it all up too, so it just is not fair to those that need it that have to fight to get it. These are good hardworking people. Yeh she did something dumb and had a horrific accident but she is not the same person now and will be affected for the rest of her life (she is about 45 or so). They did not have medical insurance either so I am sure a bit of the $ went to her medical bills though they are probably still paying on those now 6 years later.

A friend's brother has been in and out of jail for various things; drug trafficking, breaking and entering, soliciting, possession... He's a petty repeat offender, drug addict, multiple charges including felonies and has done time in prison. He has never held a job for a long period of time because he will inevitably start getting high and snorting cocaine again...

While FLEEING the police, he jumped a fence and broke his ankle so badly it had to be pinned. The pins broke through the skin, the skin got infected and he's got a limp. He filed for SS about a year ago and gets 875 a month, AFTER he got his lump settlement of 23,000!

He celebrated by getting a hotel room and coking it up for several days.

He even got a sticker to park in a handicapped parking and will be getting housing and other government care... So, not he's set for life to coke it up as he pleases on us taxpayers...

SSI asset rules -- sm - Sandi

[ In Reply To ..]
When a person is on SSI they are restricted by law as to how much they can have in assets (money in the bank, stocks, insurance, etc.) and still be eligible for SSI. When retroactive benefits are awarded, this law is still true. As a result, retroactive pay typically has to be spent within so many weeks (90 days, I think) or you are no longer eligible. Some people put the money into a bank account under a relative\'s name/SSN, but obviously, if you don\'t have anyone you would trust to do that with then your only option is to either spend it or put it in a safe/safe deposit box/under your mattress. SSDI is different in that there are no asset limits, but for SSI, what your friend did was most likely to stay within the law -- as crazy as it sounds.
