Stiff neck - sm

Posted: Jan 27, 2010

Have had a stiff neck for 3 days. Started on the right side, now on both sides. Hurts to turn in either direction. Tried heat, rubs, ibuprofen, but as soon as the ibuprofen starts to wear off it returns. Last night I sat up in a recliner and without moving my neck, my right neck up to my ear and down to my collar bone hurt. This morning it is just on both sides. I am going to take a few more ibuprofens, lay down, and then will check back here later.

No fevers, no chills, no trauma, do not feel ill. Ideas and/or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

After several weeks of a very painful, stiff neck, it took a trip to the doc to tell me to get a good pillow! haha! I got one of those $29 memory foam pillows that aligns your neck and spine. The first couple of days I didn't notice a difference, but now WOW!

Per my doc:
Our job (MT) puts a lot of stress on our back and neck as well as our wrists. If we stay for the most part sedintary also, our muscles become weak and we stress our joints and ligaments more. Exercising keeps our core muscles strong, helps relieve a lot of stress on the bones and joints.

I'm doing light, toning exercise now. when doc was talking to be about bone stress and pressure points, I realized I have aches in all the areas he referred to just for sitting on by butt all day!

(I digress...) Try the memory foam pillow to support and align your neck and spine.

Need to discover what or who is a pain in your - neck

Find out what is bothering you or who is being a pain. That is where I start.

After that you have to be very gentle when rotating around and try to avoid painful stretching.

Mine was the result of my monitor being too low - Gumby

I adjusted the height by putting an old Stedman's Medical Dictionary. In doing so, I noticed that my eyes were straight on in the middle of the monitor and I wasn't constantly bending my neck down. I haven't had neck/shoulder pain since.

HTH. It hurts like the dickens.

Do not OD on the ibuprofen - Issues with this

Too many are not good for the kidneys. I know they are good for pain but Tylenol is not as harsh on the organs.

Thanks for all the input. Cannot find Flexall at any store. Got a RX for Flexeril, took 1 last night, slept well and feel somewhat better today but it is still there. I will change the height of my monitor as I do "look down" on it. Found that Aleve works better than ibuprofen. My doctor is back on Monday and I will try to see her then. A good friend, a P.A. has been checking on me for symptoms such as numbness, tingling, inability to put chin to chest, etc, and so far the ony symptom I have is a stiff neck, right and left. I will update this update in a few days. Again, thanks to all

! ObamaCare's Stiff PenaltiesMar 22, 2010
WOW, HAVE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE BEEN HAD!! According to the CBO (Congressional Budget Office) estimates, ObamaCare policy will cost approximately $12,000 to $15,000 per year for a family and about $4500 to $5000 per year for a single person.  (posted that one yesterday, including link)  This is an INCREASE BTW over what most people pay currently.  If you purchase a policy in good faith believing that it meets govt. requirements, if the govt. deems that it DOES NOT meet their requi ...

Stiff Joints. Sometimes Painful, Sometimes Not.Apr 15, 2012
I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem.  Sometimes my finger joints, knees, wrists, and ankles get so stiff that I cannot move them unless I pop them.  Sometimes they hurt extremely bad until I pop them, sometimes no pain, and sometimes they just won't pop.  This is something that I have been dealing with for as long as I can remember, so it isn't something that has been caused by the sitting from doing MT or anything like that.  I have had one doctor ...

Knee Arthritis. My Knees Are So Stiff, When I Get (sm)Jan 16, 2014
up from a sitting position especially.  I have to stand there a minute to get moving.  Stairs are even hard.  What can I do to keep them bendable?  Is it better to keep bending and exercising them or trying not to?  I hate getting old.  I just hate it.  I'm feeling sorry for myself today. ...

Neck And Arm Sep 20, 2012
Hello, I am 52 years old, been an MT since 1999.  Just recently I have been having tingling and numbness in my neck with radiation down my left arm.  There is no chest pain.  Have any of you had similar symptoms?  I'm not one to take a lot of NSAIDS, but would if it helped.  Would yoga help this?  Do you stretch at your desk during the day?  I'm going to get a check-up with my PCP to rule out MS, but wanted to check with my peers to see if this is som ...

NECK PROBLEMSApr 17, 2016
I have been doing MLS work for donkey's years.   I have always had a little "twitch" in my neck but recently it has gotten out of hand.   I cannot go to get my hair done or even to the dentist because when I sit down in the chair my head starts to twitch.  I cannot even take a drink without my head twitching resulting in me spilling the drink.   It is not constant but occurs often enough these days to alarm me.   I am thinking it may be from constantly staring at a ...

I Am So Frustrated With My Neck Pain! Any Suggestions?Oct 30, 2010
I have been dealing with my neck issues for 20 years.  I've been in to MVAs where I was rear-ended by someone traveling pretty fast and I had whiplash injuries both time.  Add the whiplash to what I do for a living and you have a recipe for a chronically painful, stiff neck.  I've now graduated into shooting pains up my neck to behind my left ear and of course those fun tension headaches from the back of my head up to the crown. I went to my doctor last week and got the ...

Neck And Cervical Strain IssuesMar 08, 2013
Would love any suggestions of how many of you have this problem.  I have tried neck exercises, shots and heating pad and ice to my right shoulder, try to watch my posture too.  My daughter also has this, but she does not sit at the computer like I do.  This is annoying and cannot get relief until I go to bed at night and it eases it somewhat, but then when working again I am plagued with it again.   I fear it is coming from a pinched nerve in my cervical neck but have no insu ...

Constant Tension Headache And Neck PainDec 30, 2013
Hello! I have had a terrible tension headache and neck pain/stiffness for the last few days, and I'm wondering how some of you had handled this situation. I am torn between doing gentle ROM exercises/stretching or just resting it as much as possible. I've tried massaging my neck/bottom of head/temple areas with no relief. I've also tried taking 800 mg of Advil with no help. Nothing I've tried is helping, so if anyone has any advice, I am in dire need! ...
