Husband asking any MT older than me at 72

Posted: Jun 1, 2015

I have been working so many years now and I don't really mind it but hubs and I were just talking this weekend. Have checked the following issue out with neurologist- no answer on this. I noticed problems I was having with balance, sometimes standing and veering to 1 side or the other, never knowing which way I might go. I try to play it off when others notice because it is embarrassing for me. I cannot walk a straight line, hope never stopped to check and asked to do that, find I hit my feet more on objects around the house because just am not either paying attention or not even thinking about, oh there is a chair there or the table always sits in the same place and wind up with hurt feet/toes. I know I am not balanced and compensate with walking more wide based to steady myself. I find myself sometimes veering off and walking into doors, not a lot but I do that more than I would like to. Have had brain scans, had a small silent stroke several years ago but nothing recently. What now is bothering me is the fact that I am having a lot of difficulty with my job. I have always been an extremely fast typist, extremely so and now find at times I have my hands off the home keys quite a bit which means I make errors, maybe have the shift key on thinking turning off and still on, more errors and I have trouble remembering just the easiest to spell medications, much less having to Google something only to forget how it is spelled, having to return again and perhaps this time copy and paste just to make sure I got it right. If not for VR there would be no way I could do this job anymore. I was telling my husband for the first time about my concerns, saying perhaps I could make it another year but then think about time to put away the keyboard as far as a job is concerned. He asked if I was the oldest MT working and I said don't know but will check here. I have for years been forgetful, keep notes because if not would forget things really important, not simple things but appointments, things to take when leaving home for a trip where I will be gone say for a week or so. When leaving the house during the day always have to return and recheck the front door to make sure I have locked, I just do not remember if I did or not, also the garage door, did I shut it, don't remember and just left the house. Anyone out there, any issues such as these, anyone you know of who has had issues like these, any other MTs my age or so? I appreciate the input, really I do because not so worried about Alzheimer's but the gait instability, the memory issue just swirling around in my head and wonder what step to take next. Thanks. ;

older than 72 - gettin there

I will be 66 the end of this week so I'm a few years behind you :) I take my hat off to you for being able to still be doing this! I don't know if I'll ever be able to retire financially -- I joke that I'll have to have a private room in the nursing home with a computer in there! ha. I to seem to be having a bit more balance difficulty I've noticed lately and remembering things; am really starting to be concerned about that one! I have no suggestions or anything, just wanted to reply and let you know there are some of us getting close to your age. Have a good day :)

older than 72 - phatty

[ In Reply To ..]
As soon as I was eligibile for SSI I took it, and went part time. What I find at 62 is that I have far more energy doing other work than sitting at the computer 6 hours or more. I actually think that sitting like this is bad for your health, and that a job where you are active, walking around, helps with balance and all. I have been keeping my granddaughter and just have a ton of energy to take care of her, cook, run errands for family, but when it comes to sitting at this desk this much, you get tired. It is a sedentary job and it affects your health adversely. I really believe this.

I can only hope to be able to still be working as an MT - in some capacity when I am 72

[ In Reply To ..]
because I will certainly NEED to still be working, but I am afraid it won't be in MT. : (

I think the memory issues you have are normal at your age. My mom at 74 has NO-SHORT term memory AT ALL. She has dementia, probably Alzheimer's. She basically cannot function because of it. Heck, I'm only 51 and I have a lot of the forgetful things you mention. I'd never get ANYTHING done without my to do lists. I am not afraid of much but one thing that terrifies me is Alzheimer's disease. It is so cruel.

As for the gait instability, are you feeling like the world is spinning around you? Vertigo? Maybe you have considered that? Have you seen a doctor? If not, that might be a good idea. I think that is the best advice I can give you.

It would be interesting to hear how old the oldest working MT is!

Good luck to you in figuring out what is going on with you -- I hope you get it solved.

I am a bit younger than you - anonie

I found that I forgot how to spell doctors names as soon as I would look them up, not my account doctors but ones that the patient had seen.

As for balance problems, my mother veered to the left for many years and did run into doorways. I find I am now doing that.

I had to give up at 70 doing MT but not because my work was not good. Anyway, I feel much better now not sitting at this computer all day. You are right when you say it wears you out. I have been doing spring house cleaning, really long in doing it too and find that I get more done than I did doing transcription, even with ESLs.

My mother did finally have a stroke and it paralyzed her left side. She lived in a nursing home for five years till she got pneumonia like most of the residents and eventually died from that a week later after discharge from the hospital. I think she had had another stroke though.

Please see a neurologist and I'm sorry to say that one of the sm - acuteMLS

things I was shocked about when I finally got my mother to one was her balance issues on neuro testing.

She had probable Alzheimer's, I didn't have a biopsy done after her death at age 70, but the neurologist said that Alzheimer's isn't just losing things and forgetting appointments.

In addition, my mother also showed small strokes, not too many, on MRI when we were trying to figure out what was wrong.

Please make an appointment as soon as possible. I of course hope you DON'T have it, but the balance with the little memory things is kind of a red flag.

Have you had any car accidents in the last year or two? Any depth perception problems?

Have seen a neurologist, this year in fact, - starting for what I called amaurosis fugax

[ In Reply To ..]
Went to eye person first, told brain issue. While there at neurologist's office told him about the balance issue, unsteady gait, veering in any direction, had MRI brain done and he said no problem there. Cannot remember if I told him about the memory issues (should have taken note and pen along). Car accidents- only thing was friend came over, parked in my driveway, I backed my car out of garage and bumped into hers, forgot she had parked behind me. Had small silent TIA some years back, picked up incidentally. Depth perception, well I bump into things that don't move, i.e. the dining room table, piece of furniture, especially seem to forget my feet are under something, bump those frequently. I have had vertigo in the past so know what that is and that is not going on at present, unless I bend my head over and pull back up suddenly, might have a twinge of that. My BP was also running low when seeing the neurologist and also went to the cardiologist, both could not find out why that was happening. I have vacation time in a couple of weeks. After my return plan on having a follow up with the neurologist.

A note to my posting above, forgot to - add

I am only working 3 days a week, no full time so sitting working all day long is a thing of the past. I stay on the go constantly, have this vacation in a couple of weeks with water parks, alligator farms, Disney and other things where I will be going. After that have 2 more trips out west and then going on a tour for 12 days. I do not just sit and work and have been trying to get to my swimming pool where I live, love to swim but we like a lot of the country having quite a bit of rain. Love to travel and try to do that as much as I can every year. Forgot, husband wants us to go to Las Vegas for a few days so that is this summer also.
Slow down. Your rush through life, even vacations, sm - Person u answered

is frenetic, which is also concerning.

I'd get a 2nd opinion and this time take your husband with you to give his observations and so he can take notes on the visit.

You would also do well to start practicing mindfulness - it doesn't sound like mentally you are even present in the moment.

Is your husband concerned about dementia? If so, you really need to pursue this.
Not sure what you are meaning about rushing - through life
[ In Reply To ..]
I have my trips 2 months apart, one in June, one the end of August and the last one in October so rushing? The first one I planned and started planning for that this past December and now 6 months later the trip is almost here. I don't see that as rushing. The trip in October I just paid for a few months back, rushing? The trip last of August have bought airline ticket and set up hotel, nothing more so rushing? You said take my husband. That is a big laugh. He goes to the doctor and when he comes home totally unable to tell me what was said during his visits so that would be a no, thanks. He would not understand what the physician said even. I do go with him some because if something really important I can tell him in lay terms what his physician tells him. Back to the vacations, never rush through but my friend and her 3 children are going, their first time ever in Florida and I want to show them the sights and sounds. I have planned for months, buying tickets to our outings while at the same time working along and living what really to me is a very slow way of life, especially during the winter months. It might sound frenetic but believe me over the winter months has been anything but.
Then it's your writing, because there is hardly a sm - Person

At the very least you seem not to be living in the moment, you seem to be focused on what's next.

Take SOMEONE ELSE with you to appointments.

How did you do on neuro exam, questions, drawing clock, etc
Agree, the writing appears pressured. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I agree that the writing makes it appear rushed. Like pressured speech on paper. Your writing is very distinctive. It is sometimes almost ok, but posts a few hours later will be rushed and almost sound like cartoon Chinese.

This is one thing you said: "The trip in October I just paid for a few months back, rushing? The trip last of August have bought airline ticket and set up hotel, nothing more so rushing?"

It is very unusual for an MT to write that way. You should be writing the way the rest of us write, in complete, correctly structured sentences. If you are having trouble transcribing, that may be part of it. For what it is worth, your writing has at times been so bad that I have wondered if you were an Asian ESL and not an MT at all.

I would recommend that you print out this thread and take it to your neurologist so that you won't forget to mention some of your symptoms and so he can see your writing.

I should be writing like the rest of the MTs write? - Hard to hear-quit reading
[ In Reply To ..]
What you said that I do not write like the rest of the MTs? Are we all in 1 little group, thinking alike, writing alike, eating alike, dressing alike? This is possibly one of the most silly explanations I have gotten. I am having some issues now with transcription but do not be so smug as to think it could not happen with you. I have 40+ years in this and still meet the requirements from my employer to continue. If you are not my age, have really nothing to contribute to what I posted, just go elsewhere because you are only critical, not helpful.
The writing is frenetic, just an observation. Sorry to try to help - yikes

YOU ASKED FOR HELP. - THAT WAS HELP.
[ In Reply To ..]
You asked for advice. You were concerned about what sounds like ataxia, spatial disturbances, and memory loss. You said you were experiencing difficulty working.

The advice was to take this thread to your doctor so he can see your writing, which really is frenetic. The sentences quoted in the email above almost don't make sense.

No one is criticizing you. We are pointing out a possible symptom that may help you get diagnosed and treated faster.

Your defensiveness about this may also be a symptom. Every time someone mentions this, you blow up, misconstrue what was said, accuse everyone of attacking you, and deny that you have the very symptoms you asked about.

You have been doing this for several years and it is becoming more pronounced. Several of us see it.

So, please, take this entire thread to a doctor. We are trying to help you.
I appreciate the helpful postings and have said - thanks but let me break it down
[ In Reply To ..]
and then perhaps you will understand.

1) You and others have said take this thread to a physician.
a) I make notes for myself to remember what I want to tell a doctor. The last time I did this, suffering from both fibromyalgia and herpes zoster, took in a short 3 paragraphs. Hurting immensely I handed the paper to the doctor. He immediately threw it across the room saying "I don't read notes. I am busy, pick out what hurts the most." I was embarrassed, left that day and never returned. Next day at dermatologist's office was diagnosed with herpes zoster and treated.

A thread like this would never go to any doctor I see. I am not going to face another day like this again.

I will not take my husband, no notes but do plan on taking a close friend with me in 3 weeks. In orthopedic office yesterday and went over the issues with him, balance, etc. He knew the neurologist I have been seeing and told me to go back to Emory University which I intend to do.

2) Someone thought I was not "living in the moment." Maybe it was my talking about vacations. Those have been in the planning since December for this month, again the end of August and then a trip in October. Two months apart each. Someone said I was rushing through life, because I plan ahead?

3) Someone said I should write the way the "rest of us write", saying they thought I was perhaps Asian ESL or not a MT at all? My writing sounds like almost like "cartoon Chinese." If this was helpful, just let me know.

My answer to this is I have been an (American) MT for over 40 years. I work for a very strict company and I average 400 to 500 and above lph even today. My issues with MTing I have just noticed over the past several months, not like forever. I do VR, my writing plays no part at all in my work.

Again the helpful postings I appreciate. I don't really appreciate yelling at me, like all caps, that is not helping, comparing me to an Asian ESL or not MT at all, cartoon Chinese, some of that to me borders on racism.

Sorry if you have trouble making out this post but last for me here. Got some good ideas, perhaps vitamin B12 deficiency, vestibular rehab exercises. Never got an answer to my original question about anyone my same age and still working.

I will say this, as far as how I write, I am just so glad to still be living at my age. So many of my fellow classmates have not been as fortunate to make it this long and some who have suffer with dire diseases, maladies and the like. My so called golden years are really that as far as I am concerned.

Over and out.
This post has no writing problem. - Wondering
[ In Reply To ..]
Your last post has almost no writing problem. It is not the frenetic-sounding, choppy, mixed-up writing we were referring to.

You continue to misunderstand what we tried to tell you. We are not trying to be mean or racist, but to tell you that we see what might be evidence of illness in your writing. You asked about balance problems, walking into furniture, difficulty working, and memory loss. We gave you another symptom.

I work with a woman whose writing is the same way. She has a medical diagnosis that causes it. When she stops taking her meds, it becomes more apparent.

Um, I think she asked if anyone was older than 72 - not for a neurologic diagnosis
[ In Reply To ..]
First of all, the OP did not use a name, so how do you presume to know so much about her: "You have been doing this for several years and it is becoming more pronounced. Several of us see it."

Really?

Honestly, the words of my first supervisor come to me at times like this (also echoed by various doctors I have seen when trying to diagnose myself):

"A little knowledge is a dangerous thing."

People don't post on here to be diagnosed or psychoanalyzed, and really even a qualified psychoanalyst or neurologist would not attempt to diagnose someone over the internet based on a post in a forum which is not in any way formal.

As far as old MTs - my original supervisor retired at age 65, got bored within a few weeks, came back and now has finally retired for good at the ripe old age of 80. This was in a hospital, mind you, so perhaps some of her wish to continue was social. I miss the hospital sometimes too. She was in no way impaired, neurologically or otherwise.

It is always the same. Asks for suggestions, finds fault with suggestions, accuses others of attacking her.
Someone explained to me once that we have more to remember the longer we live - so we forget more
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm always deciding that I have this or that. A doctor once told me that what I had decided I had was a little dramatic, so I instantly got over it. Another time I decided I was allergic to almost all food. The doctor told me to go home and eat anything and everything I wanted. Never had a problem with food allergies after that. Not saying that you don't have an illness, but until you do, don't live as if you do. Get yourself a new pair of shoes. It may be something as simple as a rug or carpet giving you problems, or just worrying about your memory. By the way, my mom and aunt in their 20s and 30s used to put the phone in the refrigerator by mistake, forget the childrens' names (we learned to answer to any of the names if they were looking at us), etc. Life is more complicated. We do have more to remember, and we all forget things. Get yourself checked out, but don't live as if you were sick, when you may just be a normal person in a very complicated world.
A chuckle over the answering to any name - they would call the kids
[ In Reply To ..]
My friend's kids kind of fill in the blanks for me and that is nice, my grown up kid does the same when I am trying to remember. I know for a fact unsteady, cannot walk straight line, know I veer, know I bump into fixed objects (no rugs/carpets), have brand new shoes on at this minute, several pairs bought recently. I am not trying to so call diagnose myself but know that I cannot do my work like I did say a year ago, more of a struggle now to remember when I Google something and then try to remember how spelled so can insert in my reports. These memory issues, lack of balance, are absolutely things going on now as compared to a year ago. I was thinking perhaps my aging. As I posted above, veering off when standing up is embarrassing because others notice and ask "are you okay?" Chuckle again- I told my friend's 18 year old daughter if when in Florida I start veering towards the alligator pit to please grab me and make sure I don't go in! I know my age but hubby wanted me to find out if any others my age. I told him probably might be able to stay around another year for MT but if not for VR could not do this job now.

This came to mind when you mentioned your blood pressure. See link.
That was interesting but do not have many listed - that would make me think this involved

Someone asked if I had taken any tests in the neurologist's office and my answer would be no. First went because of perceived eye problem. When I was there first part of this year doctor was checking out balance issues, again no diagnosis. When back from vacation will return and talk both about the balance as well as memory issues. I was in a very abusive marriage some years ago, amongst other things with physical abuse had my head knocked up against a cinder wall, could be some residual from that, who knows?

Have you checked for a B12 deficiency? - Bee

[ In Reply To ..]
What you are describing sounds like a classic B12 issue, which is more common as we age AND many of the meds we take as time goes on decrease our ability to absorb it. (like PPIs and Metformin)

You can take B12 supplements over the counter but don't start them before a blood test, which you can request from your doctor. I take Jarrow 5000 from Amazon and use it sublingually. Took my B12 from 140 to >2000 in about 3 months with much better balance and memory. :)

Hi - younger than 72

[ In Reply To ..]
It'll be awhile before I'm 72, but I've made weird "discoveries" also in doing this job that I didn't have before. I love the benefits of working from home, love learning what I do from the job, but I have such a hard time staying awake. There's no boredom at all, just have such an incredibly hard time being awake after about 4 or 5 hours. I have to get up & walk every couple of jobs or so, do the dishes, so something, anything regularly, or I'd be sound asleep long before shift is over. It's crazy, was never like that before. I have lots of notes on things I might otherwise forget. There will be no retirement, can't afford that. I don't really have gait problems, but there's vertigo which is new since last year. Hang in there. You're certainly not alone.

Try looking into vestibular rehab exercises - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I did some eye exercises while walking that seemed to help my balance. Might have been on youtube. Google vestibular rehab exercises.

You may just be preoccupied over worry. Sometimes I wonder if I have a bit of OCD that I never realized before (double checking stuff).

If I have enough happy, positive things to occupy my mind, it relieves the stress, and everything falls back into place.

Exercise, nutrition, perhaps some meditation will help with focus.

Thanks for the information, am checking - out today

About the only worry I have is making sure I buy the right food for my cats, so picky! I swear if I could take them to the store and have them point out what they want, would be a lot better off. Life is good for me at this age, no working day and night, good friends, my animals inside and outside, great husband, extensive travel, just really good. What kind of problems were you having with balance and did it clear for you? Thanks for the information.

Retired HusbandJul 06, 2011
RETIRED HUSBANDAfter I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to Target.Unfortunately, like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunate, my wife is like most women - she loves to browse.Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter from the local Target:Dear Mrs. Harris,Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion in our store. We cannot tolerate this behavior and have been forced to ban both of you ...

Asking Husband For Money.May 11, 2011
I don't know about you all, but I HATE having to ask my husband for money, for anything! I make enough money to cover my personal expenses and the household bills and he pays the mortgage, loan on the cars and his personal expenses.  We take turns buying the monthly groceries.  It comes out pretty even, the only differences is, he has left over money from his check and I  do not. I stopped asking years ago because he'd give me the "where did all your money go" with att ...

Standing Up To HusbandMar 13, 2012
Background is my husband tends to drink too much and then tends to gamble too much.  He will literally go through hundreds of dollars sitting at the local bar on the slot machines if he has the debit card... thus he no longer has a debit card, but he will take mine and do the same thing.  The other day he took my vehicle; had to run to the bar for something and would "be right back."  After several hours passed, I called and asked where the ***#*# he was and some other not-so-nice ...

Depressed HusbandApr 17, 2012
I have been married for 25 years and together we have two wonderful, grown kids, 20 and 22 who are still living at home.  No problem with that. My husband has major depression which is usually (okay, about 50%) under fairly good control.  He's on a couple of meds, which I'm not sure are still working right, but what little health insurance we have doesn't cover either mental health services or medications, so he's very resistant to going to a psychiatrist to get th ...

Husband ProblemsAug 11, 2012
I need some opinions about some of the things my husband does. Basically, I feel that he is very controlling.  He is always making remarks when he can't get me on the phone that I must be with my "boyfriend".  If my phone goes off, he'll say ask if it's my boyfriend, and it is usually just an email from work or some type of business that I have an account with.  We have been married for 16 years, and I have never cheated on him.  My best friend since high scho ...

Husband Is Addicted To The Gym. Jan 17, 2013
This is the stupidest problem ever, but my husband is addicted to the gym.  He doesn't stay all day, but he goes every day.  He gets off earlier than I do and goes.  Then I get home and am expected to cook dinner while he is there or while he is showering afterwards.  If I don't cook, he will go get fast food.  He does NOT cook . His gym time has precluded us from doing other activities such as keeping our grandkids in the afternoon/evening and he has even ...

Husband Just Got Fired From Second JobOct 29, 2014
due to stress of not really wanting to work there, being tired from working 16 hours a day, etc. In a way we are glad, he needed the break but things are going to be extremely tight. Does anyone have any experience with food banks? We make too much for food stamps in our state. Max income is 31K for a family of 4. Can't believe the cap is so low. Anyway. I'm kind of embarrassed about it but it is anonymous here so I thought I would try asking. ...
