Do you think older cats can get sundowning?

Posted: Feb 25, 2012

My ole guy is 17.  He is fine during the day, but when I go to work at night, he cries and cries and seems so needy.  I have 2 desks together, he sits on one at my left arm and keeps grabbing me so I cannot work, until  he finally gets to sleep.  I know cats are nocturnal, but I thought they were supposed to sleep something like 20 hrs a day, especially older ones.

I found a site on the internet that said it might be deafness.

Poor guy :( Maybe you could get one of those - CatsCatsCats!

hippie mama baby wraps and put him in it while you work so he can be close to you.

I agree with the other Cat
Lady. He might be going deaf. They become clingy/needy (understandably so).

It could be a number of things. She could just want attention as you are settling in one place, or she could be sick. I am able to let my cats take turns sitting in my lap while I work. One young kitty even likes to lay upside down in my lap. Does slow me down a bit at times, but we do enjoy it.

I had one 18-year-old cat that used to sit in front of my screen so I couldn't work. Just as she turned 19, she became very ill. Would recommend a vet checkup if kitty has not been to vet in last 6 months. Is she walking around the house crying? That would seem like deafness or hyperthyroidism if she is yowling.

Although this is a CRF site, she has a well researched, list of symptoms you can search alphabetically.

My sister had a cat that was 17, and she said the poor girl would wander around at night crying.

He may be hard of hearing but not totally deaf. I suppose they can lose their sight, too.

Scruffy and I appreciate the responses.

My cat goes nuts (is going nuts right now) when it's windy - Happy MT Robin

He's a neighborhood stray that I took in going on two years ago now and because there's an un-neutered tom cat in the area, he's not allowed to go in teh back yard any more, not that it stops him from trying.

Anyway, when it gets windy, as it often does here in New Mexico, he goes NUTS. I think he wants to go outside and go find his safe spot away from the weather. I don't know what, but he's making me a little nuts right now, and he does this every time it gets really windy.

Sundowning?Nov 18, 2013
I have noticed the past few months that if I am out driving after dark I have a tendency to become disoriented and it takes me awhile to figure out where I am even though I am on streets I have been driving and familiar with for years.  Does anyone have any experience with this to know whether it could be sundowning?  I'm 57 and as far as I know the only family history I have is a great-grandfather who died of "senile dementia" at age 82 I think he was.  Is this something tha ...

Speaking Of Cats - What Is The Name Of Your Cat/cats?Oct 06, 2010
I find it interesting what people name their pets and how they selected a specific pet  name.  Mine are both pure black and litter mates.  At first we were gravitating towards names that would fit black cats one of which was Amos and Andy just t o name one.  They ended up with the names of JJ and Mojo.  JJ was short for Jimmie Johnson (my husband is a NASCAR fan) and Mojo was named related to blues music, which we attend a blues festival every year in Main ...

Does Anyone On Here As You Get Older And Are Feb 19, 2012
either married or have a significant other ever feel as though you are just sort of a nonentity after some amount of time and wonder where am I going from here on.  I get very tired of lack of communication and just nothing much to say.  You work, do housework bla bla and just not much fun and wonder how to get out of this situation.  Do you move on or just accept it or what.  ...

Getting Older QuestionNov 09, 2013
I was wondering if anyone else is going through this.  I turned 53 last spring, but I have been noticing that food I normally eat and have been eating for yers and years are either making me feel sick, giving me diarrhea and even heartburn.  I wonder if this is an age thing and that dietary needs change. So far have identified: Milk, eggs, cheese (but not greek yogurt), ice cream (but not organic) they all upset my stomache. Chocolate candy (but not chocolate chip cookies), peanuts, ...

Husband Asking Any MT Older Than Me At 72Jun 01, 2015
I have been working so many years now and I don't really mind it but hubs and I were just talking this weekend. Have checked the following issue out with neurologist- no answer on this. I noticed problems I was having with balance, sometimes standing and veering to 1 side or the other, never knowing which way I might go. I try to play it off when others notice because it is embarrassing for me. I cannot walk a straight line, hope never stopped to check and asked to do that, find I hit my f ...

Looking For Older E-mail PenpalsDec 20, 2011
Hi.  I am 66 years old, a med. transcr. for 16 years, no job since February, unfortunately very few friends.  I would feel blessed to have a few older e-mail friends to feel more connected to the world.  I do have a small family and I'm thankful for that.  They do, however, have their own lives.  I live alone and for the most part do ok but sometimes do feel lonely.  Would any one of you folks like a new friend for e-mailing?  Maybe we could begin somethin ...

Do You Feel Your Age Or Younger/olderOct 22, 2010
I saw a post on the main board that made me think of this question.  How many people feel their age or younger/older.  I'm 50 years old.  I took one of those on-line surveys about your real age.  It told me exactly what I suspected My real age is 67.  Before I ever took it I always felt older than I really am.  Most days I feel in my late 60s. Just curious if people feel their age or older/younger than your age.  You don't have to list your age if yo ...

Have An Older Daughter And I Mostly Stay Out Of HerFeb 17, 2014
My daughter is past 35. She was married before but that ended in divorce a few years ago. I was very at ease when she was married and figured her husband had her back. Fast forward. We live in the same town. She is now divorced and I am her next of kin. I know absolutely nothing about her business, not where she banks, not where she has her medical insurance, would think probably with her job, but not sure, don't know her physician's name, passwords to her computer, absolutely not ...

Did You Have A Hard Time With The Whole Getting Older Thing?Feb 15, 2010
I will be 40 next year and am having a hard time. I see a few gray hair. I have the aches, the hot flashes. My kids are getting older. My son will be in college in a few years. I still "think" of myself as a kid I guess...a high school kid really. I don't feel I can be almost 40. This is REALLY bothering me.I guess I think 40...is my life half over? More than half? is it downhill from here? I am almost 40, and what have I really accomplished? Married and kids...that's it. I have not "m ...

How Do You Get Rid Of Cats?Oct 20, 2009
No, I don't mean putting them in a sack with a brick and throwing them in a river... but how do you keep them from hanging around your home? My next door neighbor has started putting food out for strays and now there are 3 half grown kitten-cats that are hanging around not just her apartment, but mine too. Yesterday I sat down my groceries on my front step while I got my key out and they were nosing around my bags. Then when a few minutes later when I went to take out trash, they followed m ...

Why Do My Cats Do This? Dec 01, 2009
Usually my 3 cats come running when I give them treats. This morning 2 showed up, where is the other one? I have looked all through the house. Where in the world do kitties go when they just want to be alone, a kittie retreat? If they do not want to be found, usually that is what happens. I have looked in every nook and cranny, behind TVs, behind furniture. I know that kitty was just here this morning. He sits outside my bedroom door each morning until I appear. Now poof! ...

Anyone Have Cats?Oct 28, 2010
I never liked them but got this one when my mother died and I love this cat now. She goes out the doggie door and pretty much acts like one of the dogs. There's a stray cat that keeps coming over the fence and I finally figured out it was coming in during the night and eating all the treats and food left in the kitchen for my cat. Last night I heard mind screaming, got downstairs and the stray cat had attacked her. Mine hid for a long time and finally came out of hiding. She has some s ...

My Cats Have NEVER Been Healthier!Jan 21, 2012
Over the years my cats have been on different dry and canned foods: Science Diet, expensive stuff from the vet that I can't recall the name of right now, etc.  One of my babies has some allergies, resulting in sneezing and some colon issues.  But overall they are healthy cats. A new Pet Club opened next door to the Wal-Mart, and I have been buying dry food there in large (30 lb. or so) bags to save some money.  Plus they have a $5 off coupon on the back of the Fry' ...

Cats And KeyboardsJun 07, 2012
Has anyone else noticed that ever since they invented "Windows" keyboards, your cat can screw up your computer in all sorts of strange and wonderful ways? In the old days, the worst thing that Rocky Rhodes could do by strolling across my keyboard was to reboot my computer, and that took some doing (stepping on control, alt, delete at the same time).  Now, Rocky can make my screen disappear, mute my headphone, etc. because Windows keyboards have all these extra function keys. Heck, for all ...

My Dog Hates Cats, Help!Jul 19, 2013
Any pet lover got some advice for me?  I got a boxer pup when she was 10 weeks old and we have cats.  She never really paid much attention to the cats.  Well, now all of a sudden at 7 months old, she seriously tries to KILL the cats!  She attacks them and will not stop, I have to restrain her and hold her and she STILL tries to get to them.  I love her and don't want to have to get rid of her, but the cats are my kids' cats and they love their cats as well. &nb ...

Slobbering CatsAug 20, 2013
Thread below was definitely best ever.  I had forgotten about my drooling baby.  She passed away December 2012 when she was 18 1/2 years old.  After reading the post below,  I remembered the day I woke up when she was 9 years old, she was sleeping on my chest, and there was not a puddle on my chest.  So she learned to swallow when she was 9.  I used to have kleenex boxes all over the house, and when I would pass her off to someone I would hand them a kleenex. Also u ...

How To Shave My CatsOct 14, 2013
Ok, maybe not shaving my cat but here is the rundown. I have 4 cats, 2 with extremely long furry coats and they shed so much that I am almost drowning in fur. Just kidding about this but it is a lot that my hubby tells me to use the commercial vacuum we have to get it up. I did have a company that would shave the cats down about once a year but now they do not have groomers there any longer. Some places will shave but they require for your cats to have shots including rabies and from what I r ...

My 2 House Cats Are BoredJan 02, 2012
Soon I will be working 3 jobs, and my 2 house kitties are already bored (they can't stand each other so don't play together, etc.). Thanks.   ...

I Need A Little Advice On Feral CatsSep 23, 2016
We've been taking care of a feral cat for 2 years. She finally trusts us enough that we can pet her. She surprised us with 4 kittens 9 weeks ago. They won't let us touch them yet, but they were getting closer to us, within inches, this past week. There are 4. My favorite is the deep dark gray runt. He/she is the only one we haven't been able to get near and is so timid. He/she wouldn't even play with the other kittens that much, just sit and watch. This morning when we went ou ...

My Cats Are Taking Advantage Of Me, HelpOct 26, 2009
Besides taking the vacuum cleaner and sucking these brats up in the cleaner, how can I do this. Every morning bright and early, around 6 or so, they stand outside my bedroom door and meow for their breakfast. I have tried sitting out food late of a night so maybe that will carry them over until I want to get up and it is not 6 in the morning. I do not start my work day until noon so I try to sleep until 8 or so because I watch TV so late of a night. The nights my husband is home there is no prob ...

Cats Spraying - New CarpetJun 03, 2010
We recently had new carpeting put in. We have 6 inside cats, none ever sprayed in the house until now, and now they all are. They just back up to a wall and/or a cabinet and let go. This is not a bladder infection problem, just an attitude problem from what I am reading. Has anyone had any luck in reversing this type of behavior? I am using "guaranteed" sprays to clean and discourage them but it is still happening. They do still use their litter boxes somewhat, but not as much as usual. Thanks ...

For Animal Lovers (especially Cats) Mar 18, 2013
We have stray cats that come around our neighborhood and we've been feeding them.  I know, I know, a mistake, but they were little kittens at the time mostly and so cute.  Now that mating season is upon us, I think there are about 2 or 3 pregnant ones.  I know I shouldn't have started this, but how do I stop?  I don't know if any of the other neighbors feed them or not, and it will make me sick if I see them starving.  What to do?  Sometimes there are ...

Shaving Dogs And CatsApr 28, 2013
I am an animal lover and am all for making them comfortable in the summer months, but please keep in mind that an animal's coat/fur PROTECTS them from the heat/sun.  By shaving them to the skin, you are just setting them up to get even hotter outdoors and possibly burn their skin. Their coat also protects their internal body from shifts of temperature indoors or out. A pet groomer is NOT going to tell you this--they make a good chunk of money shaving hair off pets.  If you don&# ...

Question For People With Old Cats.........Jul 19, 2013
Do you have an elderly kitty that tends to yowl a lot for no reason?  My 14-year-old cat is happy, healthy, (been to vet not too long ago, also had a dental), and yet she some times yowls for what appears to be no reason.  She has all sorts of different normal vocalizations, yet when she yowls she sounds distressed.  But when I go to investigate, I'll find that she's:  Talking to her water dish as she dips her paws into it. Talking to her blanket as she kneads it ...
