How laws are made.

Posted: Jul 30, 2013

Another poster and I were talking a couple of threads down about how the country needs to educate themselves about how congress works (or should work, I guess I should say).  I found some sites if anyone's interested - some are quite lengthy (I've only made it to Part IV on the first one), but I thought this would be a good place to start the conversation.  The first two are from 2007 and 2003 respectively, but I couldn't find anything more recent (if anyone finds something newer, please post!)

A good way to change things is to know how things work - once we know how they work, we can work together to change them - like 'just saying' said in a post, there are more of us than them and it's not too late to make a change.

and one for the kids (just as an example of what might be taught in school)

I'm also including a site I found that explains campaign finance laws, federal and state.  I haven't had time to get through much of it, so I don't know how much of it is legalese, but for anyone interested in discussing this, we could start another thread - maybe get some good ideas flowing :)

I know this may take some time, so if there are no objections, I'll move this post up the board every once in a while if anyone's still interested in discussing.

In-laws!May 01, 2013
Just wanted some opinions.  All holidays and such are spent with MY side of the family, not hubby's, because his side of the family uses ANY occasion as a let's get drunk and party theme, and I didn't want my kids growing up associating Christmas with a keg party.  Hubby's mother doesn't drink, but the rest of the family does, but with MIL, she is such a GOSSIP, so get togethers are spent with the family getting drunk, talking about each other, usually isolatin ...

Regarding In-Laws, Making Sure You Do Not Become That MIL.Oct 28, 2010
I have been very careful with my daughter and her husband.  I do not pry and do not give advice unless I am asked.  I am careful to say, "Do you think..." or "I wonder....."  Sometimes my daughter comes to me with their problems and I am quick to say, "You guys need to discuss this, or maybe "This is none of my business," or "I should not be commenting on this."  This has served me well and my daughter and I are very close even though she is busy with small children and ...

If You Are Illegal And You Don't Like Our Laws, You KnowMay 04, 2010
So many of you on here are so quick to call someone racist.  I also find it mind boggling that you have a problem with the AZ immigration bill which mirrors the federal law about illegal immigration.  You quickly say it is racist when you have been told time and time again that Hispanics will not be rounded up and booted out.  They cannot do that because any Hispanic that is "harrassed" in AZ without probable cause of suspicious behavior can sue the state and the police offic ...

In-laws And Christmas.Oct 24, 2011
We go to my daughter' house for Christmas every other year, and they come here every other year.  I have 2 grandchildren.  My daughters' mother-in-law comes to my daughter's house every other year, and goes to other family the next year when they come to my house.  This mother-in-law does not come to my house because she "does not feel comfortable" here.  No other reason given.  My daughter tells me it is because she is very competitive and has o ...

Leash LawsMay 23, 2012
Has anyone else ever wonders why there are leash laws for dogs but not cats?  Why are cats allowed to roam all over without being watched like dogs?  Cats can be just as destructive as a dog.  It almost seems a double standard like when a man is patted on the back for doing something and woman is looked upon badly for doing the same thing.  Anyways, why would someone want a pet that is out roaming around the neighborhood and you do not even know if that cat is okay or hurt or ...

GOP Wants To Weaken Child Labor LawsApr 10, 2011
under a new piece of legislation introduced in the state's House of Representatives, employers would be able to pay anyone under the age of 20 as little as $5.25 an hour for their first 180 days on the job. The bill, LD 1346, also eliminates the maximum number of hours a minor 16 years of age or older can work on a school day and allows a minor under the age of 16 to work up to four hours on a school day during hours when school is not in session. With Maine's unemployment above ...

HELP CHANGE EMINENT DOMAIN LAWSOct 21, 2011
Hello fellow MTs!My family needs your help!  We are putting together a petition in Alabama in order to address the state's eminent domain laws.  To make a long story short, the government took our home and several other properties through eminent domain.  PLEASE (I'm begging) go to our petition link and read our story under the "blog" tab.  Help us get these laws changed so that the government can't take homes away from hardworking American citizens.  Help ...

Terrorists: BWAHAHA! PASS YOUR GUN LAWS.Jul 14, 2016
Hello, trucks-as-weapons-of-mass-destruction. Whether it's terrorism, racism or violent crime of any kind, we MUST NEVER elect officials who are so SUPERFICIAL as to think that "guns" are the problem, that we don't have enough gun laws, and that "more and more and more gun laws" are therefore the solution. What you are looking at with such cretins is someone who wishes to create a subservient population that is at the mercy of the terrorist (reason for more government), the criminal ...

due to disproportionate disenfranchisement of minority populations and failure to sufficiently prove claims of widespread voter fraud.  Shocking.  Texas Gov Perry is all fired up to fight back, particularly riled since the ID law will not be in effect for the May primary.  Poor Rick.    http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-texas-voter-id-20120313,0,4606014.story            ...

Fox Tells Newtown Families To Shut Up About Stronger Gun LawsApr 15, 2013
As I sat crying while watching Francine Wheeler give the White House Weekly Address, I tried to put myself in her shoes and imagine what I would do in similar circumstances. Probably just curl up in a ball and want to die myself, but if I ever came out of it, I would imagine that I would put whatever energy I had into exactly the same kind of efforts that she and her husband and other Sandy Hook families are now doing.  It is indeed a "disservice" to these families to imply they are mere pr ...

Why Religious Freedom Laws Like Indiana's Are A Bad Idea For Left AND Right, Christian Or NotApr 01, 2015
Let me first say, again, I strongly believe in protecting civil liberties, but not promoting them. This means regardless of whether I agree or disagree morally, I do NOT agree with extremists, right or left, hellbent on forcing opinion into law. Recently, this has been done by both sides, either by enacting deceptive state law that "pretends" it doesn't discriminate, or by filing deceptive lawsuits that "pretend" they're with whomever refused them, rather than finding the perfect sit ...

Court Rules Obama’s Detention Powers Not Limited By Laws Of WarJan 06, 2010
By Stephen C. WebsterWednesday, January 6th, 2010 -- 12:35 am The Washington, D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals issued a ruling Tuesday that upholds the Bush administration's broad claims of executive power to detain non-citizens. The case, Al-Bihani v. Obama, "was the first by the Circuit Court to directly apply the Supreme Court’s 2008 decision in Boumediene v. Bush creating a constitutional right for Guantanamo Bay detainees to challenge their captivity," according to the SCOTUS blog ...

Honduran President Says U.S. Weak Laws To Blame For Child Migration CrisisJun 14, 2014
What an embarrassment! With all that is going on, though, the president is once again off campaigning or golfing in Palm Springs or whatever. I know he's speaking at commencements at UC Irvine on Monday because my friend's son is graduating from there. He tells us that he can't speak for all of his fellow graduates, but he and his friends are not thrilled with the speaker. Can't say I blame the young people. They know what they're headed for unless there is a regime chan ...

Made Me LaughApr 06, 2010
Since my MT'ing salary has taken such a hit these days, I had to laugh the other day when I was watching "Intervention."  The interventionist stated that people were lined up outside of drug rehab clinics offering to sell clean urine samples to the addicts. They were getting $25 per sample.  I quickly realized that I would be paid well based on production! lol  Of course I wouldn't seriously consider doing this, but it made me laugh. Made In ChinaJun 11, 2012
Went in to the store to browse and saw the cutest 4th of July apron. It was royal blue and had "Made in the U.S.A" in a cute print on the front. I thought how cute would that look on the cook who is barbequeing on the 4th?!Yep,you guessed it. The tag said, "Made in China."I was so ticked! MOST of the inventory in US stores is foreign made. Even the Christmas stuff. I am very aware and try as much as possible to "BUY AMERICAN". Since that was going to be an impulse buy, of course I did not p ...
