Fox Tells Newtown Families To Shut Up About Stronger Gun Laws

Posted: Apr 15, 2013

As I sat crying while watching Francine Wheeler give the White House Weekly Address, I tried to put myself in her shoes and imagine what I would do in similar circumstances. Probably just curl up in a ball and want to die myself, but if I ever came out of it, I would imagine that I would put whatever energy I had into exactly the same kind of efforts that she and her husband and other Sandy Hook families are now doing.  It is indeed a "disservice" to these families to imply they are mere props and dismiss their efforts because those happen to coincide with the current Administration's viewpoint on this issue as well.

Fox Tells Newtown Families To Shut Up About Stronger Gun Laws

Families Dismissed As Political Props

Fox News figures are dismissing the voices of the families who suffered in a mass shooting in Newtown, CT by claiming they're being used and exploited by Democrats, discounting the efforts they have made to encourage Congress to pass stronger gun laws.

On April 11, the Senate overcame a Republican-led filibuster that tried to block the beginning of debate on stronger gun laws with a 68-31 vote. The impetus for the new gun proposals was driven by the December mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut that left 26 victims dead, most of them young children. President Obama had been urging Congress to act to strengthen guns laws in response to the shooting for some time.

According to several Fox News figures, Obama has been using the families of the Newtown shooting victims as props for a political agenda.

On April 11, Fox News host Sean Hannity called the effort to strengthen gun laws "naked exploitation of dead children and grieving families," while his guest Ann Coulter said that Democrats are "play[ing] with these victims." The previous night, Hannity stated that the president "is once again using families of tragedy as props for his agenda." Fox & Friends co-host Brian Kilmeade said on his April 11 radio show that Obama is "using the Newtown families to push for background checks." Fox News White House reporter Ed Henry similarly said on April 9 that "for the second straight day, the White House used the victims of the Newtown tragedy to make their case." On his April 9 radio show, Fox News host Mike Huckabee suggested that taking some of the relatives of the Newtown shooting victims to Washington, DC on Air Force One to make their case for stronger gun laws was "an exploitation of those parents."

Such an attitude does a disservice to the many Newtown families that want tougher gun laws in the wake of their tragedies. Several of the families appeared on CBS' 60 Minutes on April 7 to discuss what kind of gun violence prevention measures they would like to see signed into law, saying that universal background checks and a ban on high-capacity magazines were important. After the vote that broke the GOP's threatened filibuster, more than 30 families of Newtown victims released a statement criticizing those who tried block an up-or-down vote on new gun legislation, saying that "[t]he senators who have vowed to filibuster this bill should be ashamed of their attempt to silence efforts to prevent the next American tragedy."

The Newtown families have been so dedicated to getting new gun violence prevention measures passed that they have been lobbying lawmakers on Capitol Hill and in Hartford, Connecticut. From Politico's report headlined "Newtown families: Victims turn lobbyists":

What started as a support group is now a lobbying force unlike any other to descend on Capitol Hill. The family members typically begin their pitch to senators softly, telling the story of the child that they lost. They gently say they could not have imagined themselves in this position, but they're doing it to honor the memory of their children. They say they're supporters of the Second Amendment, and just want to have a conversation.

But there's nothing subtle about the way some of them conclude their visits: by leaving behind a color card with a photo of their slain relative.

[...]

The families coordinate their visits to the Hill through meetings in their kitchens, on conference calls and over email. The trips are paid for through donations to Sandy Hook Promise.

Many of the victims' families made pilgrimages to Harford that helped win passage of a tough new Connecticut gun law that Gov. Dannel Malloy (D) signed last week. That became a dry run for the Washington push. In a technique they might replicate in Washington, the parents lined up along the entrance of the Connecticut chamber, so the last thing politicians saw before voting was the anguish in their faces.

that these families that lost their children and loved ones have to lobby for what is plain common sense. A majority of Americans, including gun owners, believe background checks, banning weapons that are completely unnecessary to the average citizen, and clip limits are measures that should be taken.

Congress is the one forcing these families to travel and literally BEG that something be done to prevent future massacres. Congress should have acted swiftly and immediately, but as usual, the radical right wing is blocking common sense law. They are saying, and now echoed by Fox, etc., you people mean nothing. Guns and the NRA is what we worship.

The daughter of the gunned down principal of Sandy Hook called Republicans who were going to vote nay, prior to the vote just taken regarding taking up the bill for discussion. All but one, Cruz, refused to speak to her. How cold-hearted.

I said this in a post below, but I will repeat it here. Why don't constitutional proponents of the 2nd amendment also defend child pornographers in their right to free speech? Yes, the reason they don't is common sense. Neither is appropriate. Neither is what the writers of the Constitution could have ever imagined or provided for.

As sad as I feel for them, it's true Farouk is just using them - - as he does everyone.

lol...and what is Fox doing with them? - (oops!)

[ In Reply To ..]
So now the biggest issue in gun control involves reading the president's mind and ascribing underhanded motives to the Newtown parents. Brilliant.

Until which time Fox and its followers can actually home in on a subject rather than embroil themselves in agenda wars, my expectations for anything intelligent coming out of these debates are quite low.

The disgrace is Media Matters using Newtown - Truthhurts

to try to shut down Fox News because Georgie Porgie has been trying to do that for a couple years now.

It IS true that Obama and others are using Newtown politically for their gun control....and it's a shame. I saw the one mother state during the weekly radio address (which no one else has never, ever spoke on the President's radio time) that "this is just the beginning." Beginning of what? Further bans?

I'm so sad that these kids died but what they want to do will in no way keep guns out of the hands of criminals or the mentally ill. I wish people would wake up and try to figure out a way to keep guns out of the hands of drug dealers, gangs, and the mentally ill without breaking any constitutional amendments.

Sorry, but IMHO, it's an out-and-out political scheme.

So in essence, the 2nd amendment protects - criminals

[ In Reply To ..]
Your statement, "I wish people would wake up and try to figure out a way to keep guns out of the hands of drug dealers, gangs, and the mentally ill without breaking any constitutional amendments."

Which means currently these people, under the 2nd amendment have the "right" to bear arms. They should be allowed to own guns, any type of gun, because to deny them that right "breaks" a constitutional amendment? So that's okay. Criminals have more rights than innocent children according to your statement.

And I'm not sure about the crystal ball scenario where anyone can predict what crimes would or would not have been prevented with common sense gun laws in place.

The gun used at Sandy Hook had been banned previously, so common sense says if the ban was still in place when this woman purchased the gun, then the gun would not have been purchased. Whether or not some other weapon would have been used, or whether loss of life would have been more or less is nothing anyone can predict.

I think it's a totally ridiculous argument for anyone to make that gun laws would not have prevented any given murder or suicide or commission of any crime. With that rationale, we should just get rid of all laws. They obviously don't work because it's against the law to steal, rape, deal drugs, speed, evade taxes, etc., but people still do it, it still happens, so why even make laws?

Political scheme? When did this scheme start? Are these families, many of whom lost young children, rubbing their hands together and scheming? Thinking, "Ah ha!!! now we can use our tragic losses to take away everyone's gun!!" Because Obama is not forcing these people to do anything.

We should all be thankful to not be a member of these "schemers," and try to empathize with them rather than criticize them, which IS a political statement--to advocate the legal ownership of anyone to own any gun, coveting beloved, worshiped firearms that can fire multiple rounds in the blink of an eye, which our forefathers must have foreseen in their crystal ball...

what a terrific and smart post. thanks - pH commie

You make so many interesting points in a very small amount of space.

So going by your - reasoning...

[ In Reply To ..]
it would be okay to ban certain cars because some people drive them while drunk and kill other people or some people drive them off bridges, etc. to kill themselves.

Any law that would ban certain guns would also grandfather in anyone that already owns one, so there would still be plenty around for someone who does not give a whit about laws, i.e. stealing, killing, to get a hold of and do what they please.
No, by my reasoning - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not saying to ban anything.

But, by my reasoning, since people do drive drunk, even though it is against the law, why have drunk driving laws?

I don't think I said anything about banning anything. My point is we have to start somewhere. We can't just throw our hands up in the air and say... well people already have guns, so what's the use? We don't do that regarding any other law, so why are guns so special?
correction to my post - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I do believe in banning certain weapons that have no practical use for ordinary citizens. And if grandfathered in because of previous ownership, I'd like to see the ammunition illegal for said weapon. I don't expect everyone to agree this is common sense, but to me it is.
could get the same results - by stricter
[ In Reply To ..]
prison sentences for those who commit crimes with said weapons or for those caught with weapons that aren't supposed to have them (ex-convicts, illegals, etc.) Make it more than a slap on the wrist. I think this should also apply to those that drive drunk - give these people time to think about what they did. Of course, you'll always have the people who just don't care, no matter what, but those are the ones we need to keep in jail for the rest of their lives.
can't agree with that - pH commie
[ In Reply To ..]
The argument that longer sentences produces fewer crimes doesn't hold water.

There is no known number of criminals that can be locked away for longer periods of time that will prevent new criminals from appearing.

Regulation, enforceability, and enforceMENT are necessary when it comes to public health and safety, particularly when there is the potential for lethal outcomes.
wow. I didn't get that at all. - just sayin
[ In Reply To ..]
We DO ban certain cars. - We also license and register.

Actually, no one on Fox told them to - shut up...

[ In Reply To ..]
They have as much right to speak up about it as everyone else does, but Obama is using them as a backdrop not only to get what he wants, but to silence any critics, i.e. "How can you tell these parents no?" Essentially, the parents, et al, are telling those in the opposition to shut up.

I'm curious, though - one of the parents said this legislation would prevent the next "American tragedy." What exactly do they think is in this bill that would have changed what happened? He stole those weapons from his mother - no background check would have stopped that.

in answer to your question... - commie farouk

[ In Reply To ..]
Both of these factors are salient:

1. Assault-style weapons, as you know, are designed for maximum kill in minimum time.

2. If the shooter had had to pause to reload, children may have had greater chance to flee.

He had a huge arsenal of weapons. His mom - even gave him a gun for gift

I've been searching all over the internet and I cannot find one article where Fox or anyone else is telling the families to shut up.

This is why you can't trust Media Matters. Their hate overtakes any logical thinking. I'd say you can't make up this stuff, but evidently Media Matters can. And all the posters here that are so eager to jump on the hate wagon without doing any research.

So my challenge to you is to provide a link/video that we can actually hear someone at Fox News saying "shut up"

So did you google the exact words "shut up"? - sm

Why couldn't you just tell me who said it, then maybe I'd find it it I put their name in.

I have no idea what the subject of your post has to do with what I asked.

yes, a poster above remarked about this... - sm

you might have missed it. Also, it looks like the OP was just stating the title of the article she was citing. You might have missed that, too.
