Made in China

Posted: Jun 11, 2012

Went in to the store to browse and saw the cutest 4th of July apron. It was royal blue and had "Made in the U.S.A" in a cute print on the front. I thought how cute would that look on the cook who is barbequeing on the 4th?!

Yep,you guessed it. The tag said, "Made in China."

I was so ticked! Yell

MOST of the inventory in US stores is foreign made. Even the Christmas stuff. I am very aware and try as much as possible to "BUY AMERICAN". Since that was going to be an impulse buy, of course I did not purchase it.

With all of the outsourcing of jobs, etc. if we all could do our part, maybe we can help our economy just a teeny bit. I know it is going to take much more than that.

Don't want to turn this post into a political post, but How about you? Are you aware? Do you try to "BUY AMERICAN" whenever possible?

;

I try - but it's hard.

Seems like everything is made overseas anymore - China, Vietnam, Sri Lanka -and if it's not made there it's made in Mexico or Latin America. One note for the animal lovers though - ALWAYS try to purchase pet chews and treats that are made in the USA. Offhand, I think Booda and Nylabone treats and chews are made in the US. Rawhides especially - when made in China they tear into larger pieces posing a choking hazard and are also treated with very harsh chemicals. The USA made rawhides tear off in much smaller pieces and can be found at Target made by Boots and Barkley, but there are 2 types (one made in the US and one made overseas), so look for the ones that have "American" Beefhide on the front and then flip over to double check on the back that they are made in the USA.

This is nearly an impossible task, - but one way at least

is not to surround ourselves with a bunch of stuff we don't really need anyway.

I try to buy as much as possible things from our own state and also from the stores in my town so all the taxes will go to our state and especially our town so they can do more right here with the taxes.

Probably not even possible any more - even if you buy

say a garment or bottle of aspirin or package of chicken that says made in USA, chances are some component of it is from somewhere else, such as dye and fabric, bottle and cotton ball, wrapping and styrofoam package. Even driving to get to where you buy the stuff sends money to another country. Probably best to not think about it too much.

A few years ago I read a very good book dealing with this very subject. It's called "A Year Without China" and is a true story of a woman who made a commitment to buy nothing made in China for an entire year. She would buy things made in other countries if not available from the USA but wanted to see if it was possible to get along in this day & age without relying on China-made products. It was very enlightening & made me so much more aware of where things I purchase are made. I always check labels now.

Yes, I have been sooooo militant about this for the past 3 years. It has been eye opening! My 2 sons are Eagle scouts, and the Boy Scouts merit badges are made in China. That has been one thing I have had to give in but surprisingly you can buy USA. All my food products must be grown in the USA. I have made a lot of changes in the way we eat as well as shopping my local markets. My favorite was the local dairy farm sells their own pasteurized milk. Wow! It is awesome and even my severely lactose intolerant sister can drink it.

Clothes still a big problem but I see some with USA labels at small stores. Cars? Well, that' s tough since parts are made overseas but shipped to Ford and ok I drive a Honda van which I love. All my appliances that I've had to replace are made in the USA...but they cost more.

All in all, this is my one-woman revolt to outsourcing. I hope more people join me!

I just bought a new phone for my apartment. I was reading the booklet that came with it when I read, "Printed In Vietnam." Seems not much is made in the U.S.A. anymore.

from our local thrift stores, the Salvation Army, and estate sales. That is about the only way to find US built products. I have appliances from the 50s and 60s that work better than most of the stuff you can buy today. Remember Richard Nixon, how he was hated for Watergate. I don't hate him for Watergate, I hate him for opening up relations with China. They are not our friends, and they cannot be trusted, and I'm not being racist. You should read about who REALLY hacking into our business and computer systems. Dont'get me started.

The Big Worry is food grown in China. sm - Melamine Pet Food Recalls 2007

[ In Reply To ..]
Never forget in 2007 when thousands upon thousands of cats, dogs, and other animals were poisoned, yes poisoned, died or were severely sickened by their own pet food, thanks to ingredients coming from China. These innocents had horrible deaths. One year later, some unscrupulous Chinese poisoned their own countrymen's babies with milk containing melamine. Melamine was purposely used as a fake protein. And it is still going on. Check the oasis government lists that show products turned away from our borders. Only a fraction of the contaminted foods are found. Most American companies are not doing a good job of screening the very foods we eat. It is all about greed.

Check the back of all pet food containers and your own food to find out where it is coming from. You will all be quite suprised how much frozen foods and ingredients are coming from China. Companies do not want to tell you where their ingredients are coming from. Do a little research.

This is meant very seriously... I was in a store the other day called "5-Below" - everything in there between 1 to 5 dollars.  Okay.  The smell right away was that plasticy skunky smell as soon as you walk in.  Okay.  They sure did have tons of stuff very cheap, and very cheaply made.  Of course, I can go into Sears and see the same quality really; shirts as thin as tissue paper, funky smells, a size 2x is really the old 'large' to save on material, etc.   ...

Huge Debt To China, But We're Anticommunism;)Nov 06, 2014
Since my last question didn't fly well with a few (perhaps because it hit to close to home in our chosen career field), here's a new one I'd like to try to understand. The same career politicians responsible for the recent revival of "communism" fears are the exact same names who pushed for us to outsource overseas from 2004-2008, mostly to communist China, though we were already in tremendous debt to them. And this doesn't this seem odd to you? To me, that goes stri ...

The future belongs to renewable energy. If a large part of the world buys much of it from us, like it used to buy cars, we're a wealthy country. If the world, including us, buys most of it from China, they're wealthy and us not so much.
