Leash laws

Posted: May 23, 2012

Has anyone else ever wonders why there are leash laws for dogs but not cats?  Why are cats allowed to roam all over without being watched like dogs?  Cats can be just as destructive as a dog.  It almost seems a double standard like when a man is patted on the back for doing something and woman is looked upon badly for doing the same thing.  Anyways, why would someone want a pet that is out roaming around the neighborhood and you do not even know if that cat is okay or hurt or lost?  Just always wondered this and my son asked me the other day why cats are allowed to go out without leashes and I could not answer him.

I guess because cats don't pose an immediate danger to humans. They tend to scamper away when they see a person, or lovingly approach and embrace the human touch, depending on feral or a house cat allowed outdoors.

By nature they bury their waste.

The only time I saw destruction by a cat was when I had my cat on a harness and a short cable so he could safely be outdoors and explore. I was sitting out there with him. Someone's unleashed dog, a little thing, not much larger than my cat, came leaping out of their car and chased my cat which was on a leash. The cord dessimated a row of herb pots I had just repotted when the cat tried to escape the dog's natural aggression.

But, I do agree that all domesticated animals should be kept inside or on leashes outside. Unfortunately there are unresponsible cat owners who do allow nonspayed/neutered cats out. And yes, those who let house cats out, even fixed, open the door also to losing a beloved pet to theft or accidental death, not to mention diseases, fleas and ticks, etc.

btw... I love dogs. I love ALL animals. I never even had a cat until 2 years ago. I've had dogs all my life. My last one, 15 years old!!, died and that's when the cats roamed into my life :-)

Your question painted quite a visual, though... I was thinking about what life would be like with the dog equivalent to a feral cat. ;-)

"By nature they bury their waste."

I think my 14-year-old, Joe (a cat) missed that memo. I think his poops offend even him so bad that he just dumps and runs. Eye watering, man. It's horrible.

I've talked to a couple of people who just are convinced that cats need to roam and need their freedom. My 8 furballs stay inside. I have a fairly small house and so several years ago I had part of my back yard enclosed (small house, huge lot) in a 20 x 30 enclosure. It's got a roof on it and the sides are perforated steel, so the sunlight comes in but the cats can't shred it or climb on it. It's pretty cool. I have chairs and tables for them that they hang out on and a huge corner blocked off with sand for them to use. This way they can go outside and roll in the dirt (and then go lay on my bed...) and lay in the sun but they don't go roaming around to be attacked by the non-neutered male that hangs around in my backyard.

Cats are pretty successful predators which is why they are used as outdoor animals in farm country. I know lots of people who have barn cats and they don't get attached so when the coyotes get the barn cats, it's just nature at work.

They can also decimate a song bird population, though, which is another argument for keeping them inside.

That is so funny, I can picture a "cat house" in your back yard - they could even have play dates!

I hope this image posts.  This is the cat room the day it was finished and the first time the cats were allowed to go out in it.  It took them a bit to learn how to use the pet door and the blind cat was the first one out and exploring the area.

My mom rescued a female, never had a litter/fixed, confined her entire life, lived 20 years 5 days.

I completely agree with keeping felines inside. I guess I just got carried away with unleashed cats versus dogs.

The reason I made the comment about burying waste is because where I live there are feral cats, which I admit, I feed. There are also dogs (on leashes). I see a lot of dog piles... the cat stuff just isn't out there?...

You are amazing to do so much for your furballs!!!

Mine are like kids. You know how kids play in the boxes their expensice toys came in more than the toys? My cats have a facination with boxes. I just can't bring myself to throw them away. They use them as beds, barricades, and pedistals, even though the box may be only 3 inches high...

I digress. I agree cats should be inside. Just was responding to cats versus dogs on leashes.

Oh man, Buddy is never so happy as when I bring a new box home for him to chew on. I have a collection in the corner of the living room right now. Even the blind cat gets in them and hangs out every once in a while. It's hysterical.

Maybe you don't see the cat waste because the dogs eat it. Cat poop is like candy to dogs. Blech.

The people behind me and one house over have a wonderful black lab who is an escape artist. I was able to get him back in his yard a couple of times but last summer before they finally fixed the gate he got out and I couldn't get him back in. They weren't home so I left a note on their door with my phone number. I tried to keep him in the back yard but he kept knocking the gate open so I stuck him in the cat room while I finished cleaning some stuff out of the garage, so I was going back and forth through the yard to my storage shed. As I walked by the side of the cat room where the sand box is I could hear him in that section just crunching away. I just sure hoped he was going to sleep outside that night because man, I sure wouldn't want to have to deal with THAT gas.

The cats in our neighborhood are not very polite and are always trying to come into my house when you open the door. My dog is 14 and I am pretty sure he is deaf and does not pay much attention to anything coming to the door these days, certainly not a watch dog, but we love him anyways!

I am allergic to a bunch of things, cats among them. Had to keep a cat for awhile once for a friend and I was assured by our local "cat" lady that since it was a neutered all-white male kitty, I wouldn't have a problem because whatever it is in their saliva that gets ya is not there. To my total surprise, she was right. He was with us for almost a year, had the run of the house, and I never had a single problem with him nor did our son who is also allergic. Has to be a totally white kitty, and male, as well as neutered, though.

In-laws!May 01, 2013
Just wanted some opinions.  All holidays and such are spent with MY side of the family, not hubby's, because his side of the family uses ANY occasion as a let's get drunk and party theme, and I didn't want my kids growing up associating Christmas with a keg party.  Hubby's mother doesn't drink, but the rest of the family does, but with MIL, she is such a GOSSIP, so get togethers are spent with the family getting drunk, talking about each other, usually isolatin ...

Regarding In-Laws, Making Sure You Do Not Become That MIL.Oct 28, 2010
I have been very careful with my daughter and her husband.  I do not pry and do not give advice unless I am asked.  I am careful to say, "Do you think..." or "I wonder....."  Sometimes my daughter comes to me with their problems and I am quick to say, "You guys need to discuss this, or maybe "This is none of my business," or "I should not be commenting on this."  This has served me well and my daughter and I are very close even though she is busy with small children and ...

If You Are Illegal And You Don't Like Our Laws, You KnowMay 04, 2010
So many of you on here are so quick to call someone racist.  I also find it mind boggling that you have a problem with the AZ immigration bill which mirrors the federal law about illegal immigration.  You quickly say it is racist when you have been told time and time again that Hispanics will not be rounded up and booted out.  They cannot do that because any Hispanic that is "harrassed" in AZ without probable cause of suspicious behavior can sue the state and the police offic ...

In-laws And Christmas.Oct 24, 2011
We go to my daughter' house for Christmas every other year, and they come here every other year.  I have 2 grandchildren.  My daughters' mother-in-law comes to my daughter's house every other year, and goes to other family the next year when they come to my house.  This mother-in-law does not come to my house because she "does not feel comfortable" here.  No other reason given.  My daughter tells me it is because she is very competitive and has o ...

How Laws Are Made.Jul 30, 2013
Another poster and I were talking a couple of threads down about how the country needs to educate themselves about how congress works (or should work, I guess I should say).  I found some sites if anyone's interested - some are quite lengthy (I've only made it to Part IV on the first one), but I thought this would be a good place to start the conversation.  The first two are from 2007 and 2003 respectively, but I couldn't find anything more recent (if anyone finds someth ...

Terrorists: BWAHAHA! PASS YOUR GUN LAWS.Jul 14, 2016
Hello, trucks-as-weapons-of-mass-destruction. Fox Tells Newtown Families To Shut Up About Stronger Gun LawsApr 15, 2013
As I sat crying while watching Francine Wheeler give the White House Weekly Address, I tried to put myself in her shoes and imagine what I would do in similar circumstances. Probably just curl up in a ball and want to die myself, but if I ever came out of it, I would imagine that I would put whatever energy I had into exactly the same kind of efforts that she and her husband and other Sandy Hook families are now doing.  It is indeed a "disservice" to these families to imply they are mere pr ...

Why Religious Freedom Laws Like Indiana's Are A Bad Idea For Left AND Right, Christian Or NotApr 01, 2015
Let me first say, again, I strongly believe in protecting civil liberties, but not promoting them. This means regardless of whether I agree or disagree morally, I do NOT agree with extremists, right or left, hellbent on forcing opinion into law. Recently, this has been done by both sides, either by enacting deceptive state law that "pretends" it doesn't discriminate, or by filing deceptive lawsuits that "pretend" they're with whomever refused them, rather than finding the perfect sit ...
