Who made it about abortion?

Posted: Aug 22, 2012

After Republicans regained control in the 2010 elections Troy Newman said:

''I feel like a little boy on Christmas morning -- which package do you open up first?'' said Troy Newman, the leader of Operation Rescue, an anti-abortion group. Already, abortion opponents were considering pressing for new regulations in New Mexico, Iowa and Kansas, where Sam Brownback, the Republican governor-elect, follows Democratic governors who vetoed some abortion limits approved by the Republican-controlled Legislature.

In the first six months of 2011, states enacted 162 new provisions related to reproductive health and rights. Fully 49% of these new laws seek to restrict access to abortion services, a sharp increase from 2010, when 26% of new laws restricted abortion. The 80 abortion restrictions enacted this year are more than double the previous record of 34 abortion restrictions enacted in 2005—and more than triple the 23 enacted in 2010. All of these new provisions were enacted in just 19 states.

The babies not aborted - kr

And did you do your part....sm - JTBB

Wow. - Really?

That's not a bash....sm - JTBB

The above poster has made clear her stance as a pro-lifer. My question is if she wants all those women to have those babies, how does she plan to help them? If she thinks the govt should have the ability to tell women what to do with their bodies, what does she feel the govt's role should be to deal with the consequences.
I didn't say what you said I said - kr
[ In Reply To ..]
I did not say I wanted "all those women to have those babies." I did not say I think "the govt should have the ability to tell women what to do with their bodies." I did indicate that if they ARE pregnant they are to be commended if they choose to carry to term and not kill their babies. A baby is not a "consequence."
So...what is your stance on abortion? sm - JTBB
[ In Reply To ..]
Should women have the right to choose? BTW, the consequence is a woman with a child she cannot support.
Twisting post meant for you. Why must you do that? - nm

I want to see if pro-lifers are actually willing to stand behind their beliefs and take responsibility for them. It's easy to be a peaches and cream and bubbles over babies, but what about the rest of the baggage that comes with it? That's not something pro-lifers are usually willing to discuss, and that's what I'm after. If you have the nerve to allow our govt to control what we do with our bodies, then why not admit it and answer the hard questions? Its a question of accountability.

There's a reason I use a moniker, and that is because I feel it keeps me honest. It allows others to question my views and hold me accountable for what I say.
If it's debate you want, then don't twist people's words. - You've done it to me too.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Every woman has the right to decide what she can do with her own body. It's not up to anyone else, especially a man in a suit, to make her keep a pregnancy if she doesn't want to.

Do you know anyone who has tried to adopt lately? - Rose

[ In Reply To ..]
It is extremely difficult to adopt an infant domestically - yes - there are couples standing in line waiting for babies - but somehow there is this misconception that killing your baby is better for it than placing it in a loving home. Sorry - I don't usually get involved in this debate - I too believe that it is between the mother and her God. However, as an adoptive parent with adopted grandchildren because of infertility, I have thanked God and the birth mothers every day of my life for giving me a family.
it's a shame that adoption is so financially prohibitive - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
There are children who want to be loved, and parents who want children to love. We should be able to match up these wanting parents with needy children post haste - before they reach the advanced age of 2 or 3 - at which point they are less desirable to many families. I am happy for the joy these children have brought to you and yours.

It does not matter here what my personal opinion on abortion is.

I wish blessings on the women who chose to see their pregnancies through and the same blessing the women who chose otherwise. I will not judge them. Others will think differently, but I feel those decisions are between them and their God.

I agree with you, EXCEPT for late term abortions (sm) - Aunt Sue

[ In Reply To ..]
I do believe it's between a woman and God. However, if it is being used as a method of birth control, or late term, then I don't believe it should be performed except maybe under extenuating circumstances.

Lemme ask you something... have you ever worked in MFM? I have. And I have seen first hand the devastation when a woman (and their partner) come to the office beaming with excitement to have their 20-week ultrasound, anxious to find out whether they are having a boy or a girl, only to find out that the baby will have either no chance at life or absolutely no quality of life at all if carried to term. Instead of knowing whether to paint the nursery pink or blue, they now know to invest in a coffin instead of a crib or decide whether to terminate the pregnancy. Do you have any idea how desperate these people are to be parents, and do you realize that whichever painful decision they make they are doing in what they feel is the best interest of their child, themselves, and their family? Now, if it were up to you, these people should be forced to carry on with a pregnancy - even though they feel it is cruel - because you "don't believe that for one minute?" Because you have a hunch that there are women out there using late-term abortion as a form of birth control? Get over yourself. Ever seen a baby born with anencephaly? I have. We did have a patient who decided to carry to term, the baby was born alive, and she came in to visit. The baby eventually died, of course. You need to realize that the decision to continue with a pregnancy under circumstances like these is not the choice all women/couples would make, and no one should have to submit their circumstances to you or anyone else in order to your approval to do what they feel is right.
Just as I don't care what you believe, so I won't read. (sm) - LM

Abortion. Can We Really Afford To Be Wrong?Sep 05, 2012
My personal journey to an answer for this difficult question has been neither one of religious discovery nor a form of moral evolution.  It is this conclusion--which, while difficult to come to for me personally as a former pro-choice advocate, has been as inescapable as it has been wrenching: It isn't necessary to argue religion.  It isn't necessary to examine moral systems of thought.  From a purely scientific and medical standpoint, there is absolutely no point in th ...
