Need exercise advice - sm

Posted: Sep 11, 2013

I work too many hours, killing my back, supermorbid obesity and need suggestions on ways to start slow.  I'm afraid to start walking because I have foot and knee problems so I want to start something at home that I can do like dancing or something until I can start water walking.  Any web sites or on-line (free) video suggestions to get me started?

Look up Leslie Sanson Walk Away the Pounds - .

Basically, it's walk in place combined with arm movements, some low kicks, side steps, etc. You can sit down any time you need to since you're at home and maybe just do arm movements while your legs/feet/knees rest. She has tons of DVDs out, starting with 1 mile and working up. Maybe you can find something online too somewhere. She chats and laughs a lot and can get on your nerves after a while, but you can always mute her and put on your own music and just follow the moves or do whatever you can. There are no tricky steps at all, and she emphasizes that you should do only what you can do.

I love Leslie's videos. Her 3-mile walk is one of my favorite rainy day videos. On that one, it is broken down into 1-mile segments, each one gets a little faster. You can use hand weights or not. She uses "real" people in her classes too, not a bunch of skinny young things. I found a free website yesterday called Fitness Blender that has a lot of free workouts although most of them seemed more advanced. Good for you; I fell and needed a plate and screws in my ankle last year and it was a long road back. Give Leslie a try and see what you think. Another web site is Collage.com. Their videos are not free but they have a ton from beginner to advanced, you could probably find something you would like.

Thanks for Leslie Sansone tip - wheres_my_job

Checked out fitnessblender.com and bookmarked it and the same with Leslie Sansone, she had a 15-minute introduction video I'm going to try before work tomorrow morning. I have an aquatics fitness memberbship and I know it isn't much but I may be able to make it 2 possibly 3 days a week. I'm going Saturday afternoon. I watched a video today of this girl who lost 100 pounds in 22 weeks.

You're welcome - MT headed

I did water aerobics when I was rehabbing my ankle and I think you will be surprised what a good workout it is. We used kick boards and Styrofoam weights which were light as a feather on dry land but with the resistance of the water a person could actually get a workout - don't under estimate water fitness. The pool that I used for my classes also used to close off a lane or two for water walking - in the deep end it was treading water. I actually miss those classes and met a lot of nice people. The other thing I thought of for you was using a Swiss ball (not in the pool, lol!). Those are pretty cheap at Wal-Mart or Target and you could get a full body workout without putting any stress on your joints. We used that a lot in physical therapy and I have one at home now. Anyway, you have lots of ideas now, have fun!

If you are obese, water aerobics will be the best exercise for you along with a change in lifestyle and eating habits. :)

Also see if your library has anything - of interest. sm

Borrowing DVDs from the library helps break up the monotony. Last time I tried the belly dancing DVD. Not a pretty sight! BTW, I also really like the Leslie Samsone 3-mile walk routine.

Maybe lose weight FIRST - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I was pretty obese and wanted to lose weight, but I was so short of breath, carrying around more than 100 extra pounds on my small frame. I FIRST lost some weight by just cutting out all "liquid calories" and just drinking water. I also DRASTICALLY changed my diet and started eating only chicken, fish and cabbage. Once I dropped maybe 40 pounds, which did come pretty fast, I then began a walking program and advanced to incline treadmill, etc. After a year, I dropped 130 pounds. That was six years ago and I haven't gained back an ounce. Good luck:)

Check your local TV channels for early morning exercise shows - AMT

[ In Reply To ..]
One of the local channels in my state (WI) has an early morning show called Sit and Be Fit. I've watched it a few times and it seems like an easy slow way to start off. I'm sure youtube has stuff too. Good luck! Tell us what you finally found and what worked for you and update us. Cheering for you!

Turn on your favorite radio station - And go for it

[ In Reply To ..]
Any music with a beat, actually, even if it's not your favorite---happy, upbeat music will get you going.

With my radio on, I bounce around my house, just bopping, for about 1/2 hour almost every day. I also bounce around in the pool.

A lot of us MLS' are blessed to work at home and have a fair amount of freedom in our day, but it still can be hard to find time to fit exercise in.  It seems even harder now that pay across the board has decreased and we're needing to work more hours to keep our heads above water.  What things do you do for exercise?  As you can tell from my Nickname...I Zumba.  :)  ...

Anyone Exercise While You Work? SmOct 19, 2009

I just wanted to share, since people are always talking about trying to lose weight or exercise.  I wanted to firm up my tummy so I bought the Gold's Gym Ab Wheel, cost was $7.99 at my local Wal-Mart.  This little inexpensive thing is a WONDERFUL workout tool!  It has not only firmed my abs/sides but it works your shoulders and back and arms.  You know the flab we get in the front of our arms/shoulders that is annoying with tank tops as we get older?  Mine is all fi ...

If Only I Could Get Motivated To Exercise...May 25, 2015
I was wondering if there is anything anyone does to get themselves motivated and in a walking or exercising routine.  I have worked at home for so long.  I was always a very small, skinny person, but in the last seven years or so I have gained 10 pounds a year, and so now I need to lose about 70 pounds! Little by little I have gained the weight, and now I weigh as much as I weighed during pregnancy.  I'd like to try to walk for an hour or so each day, but I'm having a ha ...

Pool Exercise/aerobics...SMSep 05, 2014
I've joined a very reasonably priced health club in town ($25 per month) and have been going 2-3 times a week for 1 hour.  I'm about 5 weeks into it, and I'm already seeing positive results.  My upper body, arms/shoulders, already feel better; and a mild sciatic pain on the right has disappeared.  Also, my mood is better and I feel stronger and  more energetic.  I'd urge anyone who has such a program nearby which is affordable to try it.  I final ...

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Thursday made his first public media appearance since an exercise mishap left him with a severely injured eye and four broken ribs. Reid had been working out with resistance bands in his new home earlier this month when one snapped, injuring his right eye and flinging him into a file cabinet, he said. The Nevada Democrat said he expected to be back to full speed soon, and that he planned to run for re-election. But while he was certain about his el ...

I was bored and decided to tamper with my hair (my favorite fashion accessory).  I spent the weekend bringing it from a deep mahogany to platinum.  Damage was minimal considering it was an at-home job with my husband I the "colorists," lol! I know with this new hair color change I need to amp up the makeup so as not to look faded out.  I've dug out a few of my "bolder" colored lipsticks instead of the nude lip I usually used as a brunette, but was wondering if any other blon ...

Hi all, I just needed a little advice.  My sister called me last night and asked me to watch my 2yo niece while she and her husband and her 13yo daughter went on a cruise in June.  I told her that I couldnt because the 3 days that she wants me to watch her are days that I work.  Keep in mind, I have a 13yo, a 4yo, and a 16mo myself which I work at home with and it is difficult.  I just dont think that people get how hard it is even though Im at home.  Anyway, so I told ...

Good morning...I need some advice and at this point any advice is welcome :-)  I have a 5 year old energetic, funny, sweet little boy who is in kindergarten.  I just had a short meeting with his teacher yesterday who said that she is having some real issues with my son in class.  She says that he is very disruptive and acts silly all day.  She says that he is not mean by any means and is very sweet, but he just simply will not concentrate on the task at hand but would rather ...

I've been living with a guy for 12 years. There are some aspects of his personality/behavior that are positive. However, he has a habit of mocking me at just about every opportunity, belittling, that kind of stuff. When I get upset he says he "was being funny." He likes to contradict me in public when possible and point out negatives - not so much about me specifically but demeaning comments about things like my dog or my hobbies, etc. I ask him to please not do these things in public but i ...

I need advice on what you would do in my situation.  I'm so upset about it and my husband says not to do anything and basically dismissing it.  I'll try to make this as short as possible.  My family has been best friends with another family for about ten years.  They're just like family. MIL AdviceOct 25, 2010
Our family was planning a trip to Disney World this summer and then I decided that maybe we should go to California (where we are from) and go to Disneyland, that way grandparents can come.  Since then, my MIL has taken it upon herself to plan out ourentire vacation, starting with trying to make our motel reservations on the drive there and ending with making them on the way back.  If she were just being nice, it would be completely different, but really, she is just being controlling. ...

I'll try not to make this too long, but I have an 18-year-old, soon to be 19-year-old son who just told me a couple months ago that he is gay.  I was shocked, but not totally, as I had suspicions before because he never really showed much interest in girls.  Anyway, I told him I love him no matter what and that did not matter to me.  it took me a couple months to get over the heartache of it, though.  His dad doesn't know yet, nor his younger brother, as I told him ...

I am having some issues with my boyfriend.  He has not been working for a while now and I have been paying rent/bills/groceries all on my own.  No big deal, it has to be done, but what I am having a problem with is his bi-weekly "allowance".  He needs his own money to spend, and I understand that, but no matter how much money I tell him I am going to give him, it is never enough.  He is never happy with what I give him (usually a couple hundred dollars).  I never sp ...

I need some advice about my sister-in-law.  We are going to her house next week for three days.   Well, she wanted my husband to help her buy some power tools and teach her how to use them and put up a trellis.   So that was the plan for Friday.   I was okay with that – didn’t feel too left out.  Now she has made other plans for Saturday that I don't want to do.   How do I politely tell her I’m not into spend ...

Just got on line to check bank account held jointly with fiance.  I see a charge on a credit card that I don't recognize (plus a service fee charge).  Questioned him about it  a couple of days ago and got vague answer (s).  Today, I called the 1-800 number and asked what kind of businesses they billed for.  I was told a wide array of different things.  One of which could be porn videos.  Not happy at all as I do NOT want this in my house.  Why can ...

Asking advice here. My mom is in a nursing home.  They provide great, compassionate care, and there's a waiting list to get in.  I'm grateful that she's in a place we can afford, and it's only 3 miles from my home. When the need arose, I got her a wheelchair, which Medicare is still paying for.  It was a brand-new chair that was fitted to her petite frame, and she was able to propel herself with her feet.  About 6 weeks ago, I noticed that the chair in h ...

How Do You: Advice PleaseJun 13, 2010
I am separated from my husband and soon divorcing which is actually a  very good thing for my son and me.  We were under a lot of stress, pressure and difficulties with living in his house.  But my son grew up with his kids and he has not told them anything about us never coming back.  I tried to get him to go to counseling, and despite many of my friends warnings even went to our pastor which just made things worse, b/c my husband works under this guy as a pastor too.  ...

Cat Advice?Jul 25, 2012
Cat people, should I take in a neighbor's cat? In a nutshell: We thought this "stray" was hanging around our yard last year. I talked to her and she let me pet her. Nasty winter weather came. We couldn't take her in because we have an old blind cat who tries to fight her off sometimes. So I went door to door with her picture, looking for her home so we wouldn't have to take her to a shelter. Bingo. She "lives" a couple houses away. The woman there was very nice, has a sec ...

Advice About DadNov 01, 2013
I need some opinions about whether or not to try to contact my father who I have not seen in about 30 years. My dad left when I was nine and moved out of state. I think I saw him one time not long after that. The last time I even spoke to him on the phone was right before I graduated high school. He had wrote me letters and sent cards for a few years after he left asking me to come visit, which I never agreed to do. We didn't have a very close relationship even when we lived in the ...

I would appreciate any advice on how to sell Hummel figurines, etc.  My stepfather wants to start clearing out a lot of things in preparation for the future, and in the event I would move in with him at some point.  My mother died four years ago, and during her lifetime she bought a lot of this sort of thing, along with the colored glass in yellow, green and blue.  I have never sold anything on eBay, and don't know how to go about getting a decent price for these items.  ...

I don't know if I need advice or just want to vent. My husband and I enjoy having close friends over, going out to dinner with them, doing get togethers and other such things. Out of 4 couples, 2 of the couples are so dysfunctional that it makes me crazy. No alcohol is involved here, so we can't even blame that.
