If only I could get motivated to exercise...

Posted: May 25, 2015

I was wondering if there is anything anyone does to get themselves motivated and in a walking or exercising routine.  I have worked at home for so long.  I was always a very small, skinny person, but in the last seven years or so I have gained 10 pounds a year, and so now I need to lose about 70 pounds! Little by little I have gained the weight, and now I weigh as much as I weighed during pregnancy.  I'd like to try to walk for an hour or so each day, but I'm having a hard time making this a regular habit.

once you get in a routine - its addictive

I started walking just a mile, roughly 15 minutes. Then I increased little by little until I was doing between 5-6 miles a day. In early March, I started the C25K (couch to 5k) app on my phone and now ive finished that and moved on to the C210K (couch to 10k) app. Today I ran 45 minutes (almost 4 miles) with an additional mile of walking. It gets very addictive, you feel so good and actually miss it if you dont do it one day.

You can do it. It helps to have people to chat with who has been in your shoes. If you want someone to give you motivation each day, message me. I have the 3 best motivators and would be happy to help you as mine have helped me!

Well, my thing is this: If you wait around to be motivated, it won't happen. Sometimes we just have to DO IT. Honestly, if waited around to be motivated, my house would be dirty, I wouldn't show up for work, etc., etc.

Anyway, I lost 70 pounds. Some of it involved exercising (I like to swim and I have a pool), but most of it was changing my eating habits.

Each time I lost 10 pounds, I said to myself, "I only have to do that x-more times!"

Don't look at it as 70 lbs. Look at it as 10-pound increments---or whatever number you can live with. If you pick 20 lbs, you don't even have to do it 4 times!

It can be a horrible cycle. The more you are miserable with the way you look, the less you feel like doing anything about it.

I did not give up ANY food. I just ate less of what I always ate. I had my pizza, my chocolate, my ice cream, my everything I like. I just ate more of the healthy stuff, and less of the bad stuff. DO NOT deprive yourself of foods you love. You'll just resent the whole process. You know, if you have a craving for chocolate, have a piece or 2. If you don't have a piece or 2 at the time of the craving, you'll eat 12 somewhere down the line in one shot.

There are other exercises that aren't as boring as walking. I used to dance around the house. I put on upbeat music, and just bounced around, kind of partly walking, marching, dancing. Whatever floated my boat at the time. I never did it when anyone was at home, because I felt that I looked silly (which I'm sure I did), but I got it done!

It helps if you have - sm

a few friends to walk with you. We meet the same time everyday and walk between 3 to 5 miles. The time seems to go very fast as we chat the entire time. Also it helps to go somewhere and do something you enjoy and meet new people. I love swimming, actually anything in the water is good. I go to the local community center at least once a week. It costs 3 dollars because I'm a resident of the town so I get a discount. I've met some nice people too. When you work at home it is nice to get out, and before you know it you won't have to get motivated, you will look forward to it.

Would it help to maybe watch any type of fitness shows - on TV, or even as staged as it is, the SM

Ninja Warrior show is on right now, that I've got on for background noise to kind of drown out my husband's music in the other room.

Ninja, yoga shows, any kind of fitness show you can see on TV, or even on YouTube? Anything you might be interested in watching.

The hardest step is lacing up the shoes... - Sleepy

You have to look at it like this, "It took me years to put this weight on, it's going to take years to take it off."

Slow and steady wins the race. Quick fixes will not work. The first step is to find some sneakers that are comfortable and you love lacing up. Don't try to set a schedule because if you miss that time, you'll beat yourself up. Just say that by the time I hit the sack, I need to have logged 5, 10, 15, 20 minutes...whatever your goal is. Don't make that goal crazy. Make it attainable so that when you do meet it, you feel good about it and want to do it again tomorrow. :)

Don't push too soon too fast and risk injury. If you need a motivator, keep and outfit ready to go, right down to your shoes and socks, and set a timer for 10 minutes. By the time that timer rings, plan on being fully dressed and out the door or on a treadmill.

Bring some tunes, bring some water, or bring nothing at all and just GO.

Walking is the easiest to start with because you can just go out the door.

You can do this! If you have a smart phone, there are free apps you can put on it called things like "couch to 5K" that will help get you into shape, whether it's walking or running, to do 3.1 miles. They log and track your time, distance...that sort of thing.

Good luck and keep us posted! You can do this! It's never too late to start. :)

Oh, P.S.... - Sleepy

If, like me, you need to be held accountable for really motivating you, there are groups on Facebook, many of them private (which means you can post anything and feel safe knowing people in your friend's list can't see your posts).

I belong to a few for runners/walkers and people talk about their goals, their failures, and pretty much anything. Might be worth looking into if you do Facebook at all. I belong to a group called "Back of the Pack" and it is THE most supportive group I have ever met in my entire life and no matter what kind of a crap day you are having, you will be lifted up with their amazing support because we have ALL BEEN THERE. :)
