does anyone have a good birthday cake from scratch recipe?

Hi All - I'm looking for a birthday cake recipe, white or chocolate - doesn't matter, for my mother's birthday this weekend. Does anyone have any that are relatively easy for someone who has never baked a birthday cake (not even from a box!) in her life? Frosting suggestions welcome also!

Thanks in advance for any help with this one! It's been so crazy around here that I forgot to order one. Call me the terrible daughter.

make the homemade kind, which is made with sticks of butter, powdered sugar, melted chocolate, and I think a little milk. (A "key"recipe in the older Betty Crocker cookbooks). The store-bought stuff turns into slimy goo once it's on the cake, especially if you take the cake outdoors at all. The homemade frosting sets up nicely and stays that way, and the flavor is SO much better!

If you never baked a cake before - keep it simple

Go with a box mix. There are lots of wonderful cake mixes now. I prefer the ones with pudding in them, as they are very moist. The frosting will be the trickier part, and by that, I mean the part where you actually put the frosting on the cake. If you make the cake in a 9 x 13 pan, you won't have to worry about frosting layers. If you do want to do layers, buy two cans of frosting. I know that they say one can will cover a 2-layer cake, but it's never thick enough for my liking. Or, you could do chocolate and add a raspberry jam between the two layers, which bumps up the wow factor. No matter what shape you bake, do a crumb coating of frosting first. That is a very thin layer of frosting, so thin that you can practically see through it. It holds all the crumbs down so you won't have crumbs picked up and spread through the frosting on the finished cake.

To do a crumb coating, remove a little bit of frosting from the can and place in a separate bowl. You want to keep the crumb frosting separate from what you'll use to finish the cake. That way, you won't get any cake crumbs in your pretty final coat. Stir up or whip up the crumb coat frosting a bit to get it nice and soft. Then spread the frosting thinly over every surface of the cake. It doesn't have to be pretty. It's simply acting as a glue coat to keep everything in place. Once it's crumb coated, let is sit and air dry for about 30 minutes to an hour. Now your cake is sealed! Frost with your final fluffy coat of frosting over the entire cake.

Another lovely cake option, I think, is to use a box pound cake. It's a denser cake, and you can add your own touches. Add in mini chocolate chips and substitute orange juice for the liquid in the recipe. Love that! It's great with a deep, rich chocolate frosting.

Dunken Heinze devils food cake mix
1 package of chocolate fudge instant pudding.
4 eggs
water & oil

Directions on the side of the box. It is sooooo good. If you want the full recipe I can give it.

I used a bundt pan and bake it at 350 for 50-60 minutes. Frost the top anyway you want. DH does not like frosting so I dust the top with confects sugar.

Most sites have some sort of feedback where people can share little changes that they make to the recipes and can also share whether or not they turned out well. These comments can be really useful because sometimes they pertain to baking time or how to make a moister cake, et cetera. Making a cake is not too hard. Good luck!

Hershey powdered chocolate and the recipe should be on the back of the box or online at hershey.com. It is so good. You can either make their chocolate frosting on the box or a simple buttercream is to die for on it!

Here's how my b-day went. Got up early to work. Had work today, so not complaining about that, but was working on my b-day, instead of doing something nice for me.
