Gift ideas for little girl's first birthday? - sm

My friends' little baby girl is having her first birthday next month, and I was invited to her birthday bash! I don't have kids, and am pretty clueless as to what would be a good gift idea for her. Does anyone have any ideas for something that would be fun (and safe!) for Baby, and/or useful for Mom? Or something for both of them?

I usually just do clothes for baby's first birthday, as that is usually what mom needs and there are only so many rattles and such that baby can have and she probably already has them. A really nice pair of shoes, depending on what you want to spend, if she is walking or starting to walk.

Board books with textures are always good. Big blocks are a good idea as well. Depending on what you want to spend, an electronic activity table is a fun idea. My daughter got one for her first birthday and she just turned 2 and still uses it. I think they got it at Target. It plays music and has colors and letters on it. It think it was about $50. Also, for a little girl you should get her a couple of cute summer outfits, which is nice for the parents, as they go through clothes like crazy, especially in the summertime, when they seem to get dirty about every 15 minutes. One-year-olds are clueless, so I usually go for something practical that mom and dad would have to spend money on--I personally wouldn't clog up the home with toys and things. I say go for baby wipes, bibs, electrical socket covers, diapers... Make a whole basket of it, whatever you can afford.

Another option is a "fun blanket." It rolls out onto the floor or playpen, and it's got mirrors, little doo-dads to play with, bright and fun colors. You can roll it up and take it anywhere and baby has a place to play by himself.

A cute little top with a cat on it, perhaps. She probably already has fancy dresses (or will get more at her party) - I may lean towards play clothes.

This friends family has always treated my husband like one of their own, so it is sort of like an uncle finding a gift for his nephew. Here's how my b-day went. Got up early to work. Had work today, so not complaining about that, but was working on my b-day, instead of doing something nice for me.
