Insurance companies at it again!

Posted: Feb 12, 2010

Dear MoveOn member,

Blue Cross has just announced that it's immediately raising premiums charged to hundreds of thousands of individual customers by as much as 39%—even though their parent company's profits soared to a record $4.7 billion last year.1

Even worse, the insurer has so far refused to explain why they're increasing their rates, and warned that they might do so again this year without warning.

The Obama administration is demanding answers from Anthem Blue Cross, and Congress has opened an investigation.2 But Blue Cross is only going to respond if this story becomes a major public-relations problem for them.

So it's time to turn up the heat. Let's join the growing call for an explanation and send a powerful public message that these abuses by Big Insurance are unacceptable.

Clicking here will add your name to the petition:

http://pol.moveon.org/bluecross/o.pl?id=18913-5238824-w27OrGx&t=3

The petition says: "Anthem Blue Cross must provide a detailed explanation for their exorbitant rate increases, or else roll them back immediately."

These latest rate increases in California—reportedly the largest ever by Blue Cross for individual policyholders in the state—are yet another powerful example of how badly broken our health care system is and how desperately we need to hold Big Insurance accountable for exploiting their customers.

Anthem Blue Cross's parent company made record profits last year despite losing 1.4 million customers—increasing their profit margins by cherrypicking the healthiest people to insure.3

Then they can turn around and dramatically increase the rates they charge to the customers they've kept, because there's almost no rules governing rate increases. In fact, the company doesn't even have to publicly reveal how many customers' rates they've increased, or by how much.

The good news is that Kathleen Sebelius, President Obama's Secretary of Health and Human Services, is already publicly demanding answers from the company. And the House Energy and Commerce Committee has announced plans to hold hearings to investigate.

But to get Anthem to clean up their act—and show politicians and the media that we can't afford any more abuses by Big Insurance—we all need to lend our voices. Clicking here will add your name to the petition:

Thanks for all you do.

A predictable outcome of a killed HCR bill. Price we all pay - for party of no handiwork. nm

Is there any doubt that this industry needs to be brought to its knees? What angers me more than anything is the idea that this could have been prevented.

I think the policy holders all across the nation should drop their insurance coverage when enrollment time comes around en masse, start flooding the emergency rooms and refuse to pay their bills until this problem gets solved. Hitting them in the pocketbooks is the only language they understand.

You mean the price we all pay - for Dems in disarray

[ In Reply To ..]
I think you'll find that the Dems hold a majority in the Senate, a majority in the House, and the White House. The reason they can't get this disgusting bill passed is because Americans of all sorts and all political persuasions have told them to take a hike, and so far Obama just hasn't found the right set of bribes, pork and corruption to persuade HIS party to swallow the cyanide capsule and pass the bill.

I'm sure he's working on it, though. Be interesting to see who gets what THIS time around, won't it?

HCR became disgusting by whose input? Who got concessions squared - but continued to NO it to death? Go figure.

Americans want their original bill back.
Amen to that! That is exactly the problem - Sick Of It~
[ In Reply To ..]
The final bill was joke. They only people that would benefit from what the pubs wanted would have been the insurance companies and their CEOs!

Wutta yuk - MoveOn asking for donations - Let them get it from Soros

And all they've got is 5 million members? That's less than 3% of the voting age population of 210 million (and that's as of the 2000 census, so the percentage is prolly even smaller now).

No wonder no one listens to these screwballs except, well...

Heck, MT Stars is likely to pass MoveOn any minute now!

Does grass roots successful perseverance always tick you off? - Members vs subscribers....

Skewing numbers again, are we? No need for greed here. You think the only folks that tune into Moveon.org are paying members? You can subscribe for free, remember?

As long as the organization can bankroll its expenses and the word is out there to be found, they have done their work and done it well.

Wonder how many members the tea party fractions....err, I mean factions have snared so far, and how they can expect to persevere in the absence of leadership, platform, plans and policies? Got those numbers handy?

Lets crunch a few numbers, shall we? - sm

Current estimate of voting age Americans is 232,458,335. If 2000 figure was around 210,000, this would indicate an increase of 22,458,355, or approximately 9.5% increase over 9 years. This yields 1.05% increase each year. I am choosing a 2008 model because other pertinent figures are readily available for that year in terms of illustrating my point.

For 2008, there was an 8.4% increase in voting age Americans, giving a total of approximately 227,640,000 million of voting age. Of these, about 169,000,000 registered to vote: 86 million democrats, 55 million republicans and 28 million others. Of these, 129,400,711 turned out to cast a vote, or 76.5% of registered voters, or 56.8% of voter age Americans.

Assuming that republicans do not donate to moveon.org, we have 5 million out of 69,456,897 who actually fork over cash to put their money where their mouths areâ€Â¦.just in this one organizationâ€Â¦or 7.2%. The actual figure of democratic support for its own agenda in terms of monies donated is 2.4 times larger than your figure. What percentage of voting age, registered voters or even totals of voters who turn out is irrelevant. What matters here is how effective the organization is in motivating its own supporter to engage in the process of getting out the vote. 7.2 out of 100 grass roots democrats parted with their hard earned bucks to do that in 2008.

What this means in 2010 is yet to be determined, but rest assured that the watch group will be missing no opportunity to keep up momentum. The slams to Obama, just say no to O and tpots contribute even more steam than moveon.org does to keep that momentum going. We shall see.

Before slamming the source, scroll down and take a gander at the 211 entries backing up that data.

On Obamacare Insurance Companies Pulling OutJun 22, 2017
Obamacare allows people to wait until they get sick to sign up. That's no different than waiting until my house burns down to sign up for homeowners insurance or waiting until I wreck my car to get car insurance.I understand that there are a lot of people who don't own a house or a car and maybe are unfamiliar with how insurance works.  It is "insurance" which means insuring against what might happen. Allowing people to wait until they are sick means the insurance company is basic ...

Insurance Companies Do HEDIS This Time Of YearNov 20, 2015
If you are burned out on transcription and want to not sure what to do, this is the time of year when all of the insurance companies start hiring temps to do their annual HEDIS projects.  The projects last 5-6 months and pay well.  Call your local temp agencies and ask about them.  I went from transcriptionist to working on one HEDIS project in 2014, did odd jobs til the 2015 project started, was on unemployment for a few months for the first time in my life and then got hired on ...

ACA Requiring Companies To Provide Insurance To Workers Of 30 Hours Or More Per Week.Jan 14, 2014
I just learned that under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) companies with greater than 50 employees are required to offer insurance to all employees who work an average of 30 or greater hours per week.  My company offers us insurance but you have to meet a production requirement consistently in order to qualify for this, and I know a lot of MTs struggle with this production requirement and therefore even if they work 35-plus hours per week they may not make the production requirement to earn a ...
