Kids and lice

Posted: Jun 20, 2013

Any opinions please?  My daughter has a friend who started coming over and I noticed she was continuously scratching her head A LOT, so I asked her to let me look in there and she had lice.  It wasn't a case that was just hard to get rid of, her head was crawling with TONS of lice!!!  I actually called and asked the girl's mom about it and she acted like she didn't even know she had lice, but said she would treat it.  Well, then my daughter gets lice, so I treat her head, we clear it up, but she is best friends with this girl and so my daughter keeps continuously getting lice.  Now, my son even got it and he is a teenager, so of course he says he doesn't want this girl back around, he doesn't want lice.

The little girl went to her grandmother's for 2 weeks and we cleared up all lice in the house.  Neither of my kids even had an egg in their hair.  The little girl comes back and they have lice AGAIN!  I called the mother back and she actually had the nerve to say that they never had a lice problem before and basically said her daughter was getting it from my daughter!

I don't know what to do, because this girl is my daughter's best friend.  I cannot afford lice treatment every day that she comes around and I don't want my kids walking around with lice.  What would you do?

I cannot believe some parents are so freaking selfish as to allow their kids to go to someone's house knowing they have head lice!

Check her head before she comes into the house, if she still has head lice, send her home and call the mother and tell her your sorry, but you are sending her home because she still has head lice.

Worst case scenario....make an anonymous call Department of Child Welfare, or whatever they call it in your neck of the woods. This amounts to neglect.

My daughter got scabies when she was little, about 4 years old. At first we thought she had poison ivy, but it didn't clear up. Took her to the doctor, got cream for it, called her daycare and said, hey, she has scabies. They acted as if we brought it to their daycare.....ummmm.....where do you think she got it??? Some other a-hole parent didn't report that their kid had it and that's where my kid got it. We at the very least did the right thing by reporting it to the daycare and other parents and stopping the spread.

Lice and scabies is not a cleanliness issue....it's a kid issue and lice actually loves clean hair rather than dirty hair. It's nothing to be ashamed about, most of us have been through it.

You might also want to ask the mom if maybe she isn't doing something right and that's why they aren't going away, maybe she doesn't know what to do??

I had an issue with head lice when my oldest was about 12 or so. We did the shampoo and comb thing twice or three times, I got a little OCD there LOL.. But I know for a fact that things in the home must be washed.. The two times she came home with it I took all the bedding, towels, clothes directly to the laundry mat and washed in as hot water as the material would allow. Got a spray for furniture and carpets. Those little pests live in everything. It was a bit expensive and drove me nuts the second time, but we dealt with it. The mom of this child that still has lice may not even know that she needs to do such things, just treat the hair. In my junior high years we had a family that was run by an older brother, parents had died. The daughter/sister got lice and they just shaved her head, bald....cant even imagine what that child went through.

Just my input, hope all goes well

Here too, you have to wash, and bag up everything - sm - XXX

We got them from a friend of my daughter's, who we think got it from a girl on her softball team (they shared helmets)....we all shared brushes when said girl went on vacation with us as she forgot hers. She was itching when her parents dropped her off, thought it was a combination of sunburn (had just come staight from the beach) and a shampoo allergic reaction as she was not using her normal shampoo at the beach)---took 6 weeks to kill the suckers here, 3 OTC treatments spending several hundred $$ and 2 home remedies and hours upon hours of going thru everyones hair (3 others) every night stand by long strand. I washed all the sheets, bagged up stuffed animals galore, vacuumed floors, mattresses (getting rid of the bag immediately outside), did this for practically eery day for weeks since we were having trouble getting rid of them on one of my daughters, also vacuumed and sprayed the car, all the furniture, etc. It is extremely labor intensive but necessary. Both the OP and the daughter's friends family need to do all of this to eradicate them. Personally I would just say the girl cannot come over until they are gone, period. They are He** to get rid of. Friends had a really hard type of lice to kill, after a few months they just shaved their heads....no more lice. Rather drastic but effective.

LICEAug 21, 2010
About a month ago I asked for advice about a girl who had lice for the last year.  She had been treated 3 times but her mother evidently is not taking care of it at home.  I ended up having my daughter's birthday pool party.  I checked the little girl when she came, and she had eggs all over her hair.  I didn't have the heart or courage to send her home.  We carried on with the party thinking I would just get it over with and she would go home and we would be l ...

Prescription Head LiceAug 13, 2012
I have never had a problem with head lice before but this last year, my 2 girls went to camp and came home itching and scratching their heads.  Of course I was in denial at first but then I saw those icky criters crawling in my oldest's daughters head.  I headed to the pharmacy and got Rid, followed directions to a T, combed with lice comb, vacummed, bagged toys, vacummed furniture and thought they were gone; but 2 months later, kids are itching again. We used Nix this time, ...

Head Lice In Swimming PoolsJul 22, 2010
I am having a pool party/birthday party for my daughter tomorrow and I know of a little girl who has had head lice 3 times in the past year.  (I don't really think she has gotten rid of it).  If she gets in my swimming pool, what are the chances she could she give it to the other kids?  I do not want to insult her by "checking" her head when she gets here and then not letting her go swimming.  I know I will find nits.  Any advice? ...

Anyone Here In 30s And Without Kids?Oct 02, 2010
Sometimes I feel i'm the only one over 35 without children.  Most of my friends have them and almost everyone in my extended family.  I have never been in the position financially to have them, and I figure it wouldn't be fair.  I grew up in poverty and as an only child, and I do not want to lay that burden on someone else.  My husband and I might still adopt, or if we suddenly become rich and healthy in the next year or two produce one (lol).  Just wondering i ...

This is so confusing - My daughter has a best friend who comes from a family that is very close-knit but very dysfunctional at the same time.  Her friend, let's call her Sue, has a brother, let's call him Tim, who has had an on and off girlfriend for several years.  He's 29 and she's 21.  Two years ago she had a baby by another man and Tim decided to take on paternal responsibilities and he is the only father this child has ever known.  She has now gone an ...

She spends quite a bit on pagaents actually and eating out and just went on a short vacation/pagaent. They went out of town to a pagaent and vacationed for the weekend while there. I have a 9 year old boy who has played soccer for years.  I noticed this current season that "the light" is just not there when he's playing.  I asked him about it this morning and he told me that it's just not fun anymore.  I don't push him to play by any means but I am afraid that he won't go back to it in the spring.  I had a long talk with the coach this morning because he noticed the light was gone last night as well. Kids And ADHDMay 18, 2011
My son is 8.  He has had a rough time in school.  He has always been a hyper kid but never to the point that we felt there would be a problem.  We just thought he was more active and and a very hands-on learner.  This school year (thankfully almost over) has been horrifying for him.  He says kids in class make fun of him, he is constantly getting into trouble.  The teachers say he cannot be quiet or stay in his seat and focus.  All of this worried us and we too ...

My child has social anxiety and has very few friends.  It is difficult for her to make friends, but once she does, she loves her friends.  It causes her a lot of stress and such at school, due to this, but it is getting better. She has this one friend, who is her best friend, she is 11 years old.  I have known this child since she was born, because her dad, who raises her as a single father, is very close friends with my husband.  There is no talking to the dad about the pro ...

How Do You Feel About Kids And CTs Or X-rays?Dec 08, 2009
A lot of doctors that I transcribe for are telling their patients as old as 18 not to get any kind of radiology done that they might not need because of the risk of cancer later in life.  When my son was 1 he fell down the basement stairs and the doctor had told me this, but also told me that the risk was very small and that it is better to know than not to know.  I think that CTs, X-rays, etc. are good things.  I have heard of so many stories where the person goes ...

Since We Were Kids, My Sister Has Been Ratting Me Out To Mom!Jul 11, 2011
As an adult, she hasn't changed that much.  Always looking for something to tell mom about me or just plain gossip about me to mom and anyone else who will isten.  As a young adult, when I still had the energy to have a fiery temper, I would fight with her.  After I had my second child, I decided to just not pay attention to her anymore and just ignore her BS.  Our kids are now teenagers and still my sister plays her games.  Today I finally blew like Mount St. Helen ...

Beauty Pageant For KidsJul 18, 2010
What's your opinion?  I don't like to see toddlers dressed up with all the makeup, looking like little women, many times doing the sexy gestures, etc.  If we want to teach girls that they are valuable and not just sex objects this is the wrong way to go about it.  I especially hate when they show the little kids crying and the parents forcing them to perform.  Just me? ...

Tumble Bus And Nursery KidsApr 27, 2012
Perhaps my niece should re-think this nursery school she had put her daughter in...One day a week the nursery school has the "tumble bus" come to the school. However, this is not an activity open to all children, only to the ones whose parents pay an extra $11 for it. Well, my niece forgot about it and didn't pay for her daughter to participate. Opinions On Kids And MedsSep 05, 2012
What is your opinion on kids on medications to keep them calm?  Especially boys.  Boys are boys, and they all inherently have "ADHD" until they're about 16.  <g> I think it's a matter of discipline, not drugs. Also, it just kills me that kids who have behavioral problems and who are in chaotic home environments, are drugged and therapied to death, then stuck in the same horrible nutty home environment.  Drug the kid, ship the kid to therapy, but keep the ...

Giving Kids MoneyFeb 21, 2013
Parents out there, how do you give your kids money, like how much and what all do you provide for them?  My son is 13 and my daughter is 9.  We had my son a cell phone for years, but lately we decided to cut back the $250 bill, so I told him to use the home phone.
